Should we be worried about war

Seen a lot in the news about Ukraine using USA missiles against Russia. I've been thinking more along the lines that it won't start a WW3 and will resolve at some point without the UK getting directly involved in war. But there seems to be more and more tension and threats of an all out war recently.

Should we be worried about WW3? I haven't been prepping or anything but does make me wonder if I should start getting a few days worth of food in case. At the same time I don't want to go down the prepper hole and start getting over the top.

Putin is full of hot air. He’s terrified of NATO. What’s this now, another of his “red lines” crossed. He’s a playground bully & he needs standing up to.

My observation - and this is controversial - is that you couldn’t put a fag paper between him & Netanyahu, whose behaviour is also that of a crazed despot with murderous tendencies.

This world is currently run by power-hungry old men, and it’s not in a good way.

LaDamaDeElche · 20/11/2024 20:37

I don’t live in the uk, I live in Spain. Nothing is being reported in a way here that people are worrying about WW3. Possibly the British media stirring people into a frenzy?

Kjpt140v · 20/11/2024 21:26

Yes

It's more should we be prepping enough to have a few days of food in. A year ago I would have said that WW3 was not happening and the media is over exaggerating. But there is more tension now and it does seem more of a possibility. Of course that's a worry.

You really don't need to worry about the availability of food.
If there is a serious risk of conflict, you'll see a tsunami of former 'British' leaving for safer climes

It’s NATO I’m concerned about, particularly this awful decision of Biden to escalate things just as his tenure comes to an end.

It was past time for someone to stand up and take action, it’s now over 1000 days and NK has entered the fray. Russia isn’t going to stop if they take Ukraine.

Nikkigriffin · 20/11/2024 22:38

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/11/2024 12:12

I’d be a lot more worried if that permission hadn’t been given. Do you actually think that if russia is able to defeat Ukraine it would stop there?

Our best chance of avoiding a WW3 in which the UK is a direct combatant is to arm Ukraine to win as quickly as possible. We should have done it 1000 days ago.

Totally agree, Putin's ideology is to get the former USSR band back together again.
When Trump gets back in the white house he will roll over for Vladimir😡
He's already said Putin can have Ukraine.....then its on to Moldova next ( not a NATO member) ......then probably Poland.
Trump pulls out of NATO and we end up sending EU troops.
I don't see nuclear war in the future ( look up the Russian Satan 1 and 2 nukes😲)
But I do see a ground war coming.......Trump is the biggest threat to global security.....more than any other leader because he's dumb, spiteful and won't admit he's wrong .....I see UK troops helping Ukraine within 1 year of Trump taking office.
We already have special forces operating there already.
Biden should unfreeze all Russian money in the US and give it to Zelensky. They've been made to fight this war with one hand tied behind their backs! Ps......Putin has 3 body doubles, they all had cosmetic surgery😲

I don’t feel completely comfortable in saying ‘of course we won’t have war, it’ll all be fine’. I think it’s a very real possibility.

What I will say is that if it’s occupying a large proportion of your thoughts, step away from the news for a while. There is absolutely nothing you can do to change what may or may not happen, and there’s also every chance that nothing at all will happen and it will all die down. If you suddenly go bonkers and start panic digging a bunker in the back garden and spending your pension on bottled water and tins of beans, it is not going to be the best use of your time or have the best outcome for you. You will achieve precisely nothing except torturing yourself if you start worrying about it.

I think all you can do, where you can afford to, is take small and sensible precautions, batteries, a torch, a small amount of cash, some tinned goods and long life stuff. Keep ID documents all together in one place. Keep medication all together in one place. If you have family living a long way away, make sure they know you love them whenever you speak to them. None of this is going to help you if we get to the nuclear stage, but if we have power cuts etc for any reason, it’s sensible stuff that will help you out in most occasions. And then live your life and enjoy it as much as you can.

This. Most sensible post I've seen!

@SoiledMyselfDuringSomeTurbulence

"None of this mentions the level of corruption in Ukraine as against other societies. "

True but this link does and shows Ukraine (and also Russia tbf) that although they have both improved over the last 20 years they still have some of the worst corruption in the northern hemisphere, for example worse than say Zambia.

What does SAHM have to do with this? Seems like a thinly veiled dig to me. Suggesting SAMHs have nothing better to do or nothing else to worry about.

Actually I'm SAHM, until I read this post I didn't even know something is prepping. This is simply because I refuse to watch news, there is absolutely no need to do it.

PeppyDeer · 20/11/2024 23:57

I don’t see how having a pop at SAHM helps the discussion. People are allowed to worry and helpful hints on how not to worry as much or how to prep would be more useful in my opinion. Personally I am worried and have started to buy extra food to stockpile. The thing is if you don’t stock up as we saw in Covid, by the time others are doing it, we’re back to fighting over toilet roll again. I like to be one step ahead.@princesspadam

I had never heard of 'prepping' either, Mayana. I realised it meant the same as 'stockpiling', which we were advised not to do at the start of the pandemic. I have memories of living surrounded by boxes of toilet rolls and tins of food :-). Well done you for not watching the news on TV, however it's impossible to avoid it altogether. What will be will be and there's nothing we can do except encourage everyone to strongly object to, and campaign against, going to war.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/11/2024 00:02

People are forgetting that Putin isn’t a traditional dictator. He doesn’t really have an ideology, he’s essentially a mafia boss whose crime organisation is an entire country. He isn’t in it for anything other than power, money and respect. If it was ISIS or Iran I’d be worried about nukes, Putin knows if he does that he loses everything. He needs the war, to keep control of the population and knows ultimately that whatever happens it isn’t a war they can lose. The worst that can happen is Ukraine gets all of its land back and Russia loses nothing but a hundred thousand people from potentially secessionist areas of the country he would have knocked off or repressed anyway.

everyone on the right of US politics clutching their pearls are just making life easy for him and killing Ukrainians.

PeppyDeer · 21/11/2024 00:09

Are you jealous you can’t stay at home with nothing more in you're head than a war that may never happen? Seems you have beef with SAHM

PeppyDeer · 21/11/2024 00:15

Exactly!

Everyone got their iodine tablets?

Doesn’t really help older adults according to research
Good for younger people though

“No need to worry about the war. As soon as the Russian nuke detonates above Britain, you’ll see a bright light. Next, all your skin will drop off, and you’ll fall to the floor like a bag of bones. Don’t worry—live your life. When it happens, you won’t know anything about it.”

StandingSideBySide · 21/11/2024 01:23

Tomorrows headlines on this subject are quite worrying for the UK

‘Ukraine fires UK made missiles into Russia for the first time’ .

As per your last post @Seasidesand76 the UK has now become a little more involved.

IThinkImGonnaBeSadIThinkItsToday · 21/11/2024 01:30

3 days worth of water.
3 days worth of non perishable food and drink in case electricity attacked .
3 days of cash in case banks are cyber attacked.

This is good for any emergency. Aside from that I don't prep. And I sure as hell won't be painting my windows white or building a bunker. I've seen Where The Wind Blows and Threads!

That would be the best way to go. ie quickly but that’s not how it would be for most

Ok so I just looked it up
No intel on size as it’s 16 bombs in one
Luckily its failed it’s last test … let’s hope it keeps doing that

StandingSideBySide · 21/11/2024 02:26

Both stepping up their defences.!
What has Labour done just recently ( yesterday I think )

Reduced our defence budget 🤣🤣🤣
So allow uk weapons to be fired on Russian soil and simultaneously reduce our own defence budget………🤔

Ionlytrymybest · 21/11/2024 02:40

I suppose I’m always prepared with food etc not because I’m worried 🤣 just something I’ve always done. Always have a supply of long dated food / bottles of water / candles and other stuff in my under the stairs cupboards.
I do not actually know why although I have to say it came in handy when we were discharged from hospital in to shielding and had no shopping in what so ever and couldn’t get to the shop and before the delivery started being pioritised. Boris boxes were not made for children 🤣🤣🤣
