To think that people under 50 don’t watch the king’s speech on Christmas Day?

Just that really. I’ve never watched it because I grew up in a household that wasn’t royalist. I don’t know any friends who make time to watch it. The only person I know who does watch it is my 82-year-old MiL.
So do you watch it? Are you under 50?

What's wrong with Charles?

I was wondering this too! Seems like he's going around doing your basic kinging as you'd expect. Seems fine to me, just kinging about like normal. Can't see a major difference between this one and the next one.

bozzabollix · 18/11/2024 22:25

God no, how awful.

Late 60s and never watched it. My working class parents couldn’t stand the Royals and we never had TV on on Xmas Day anyway. Too much else to do. I think it’s a cultural, not an age thing.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 18/11/2024 22:29

Never watched it, never will, I’m 49. I don’t think my children even know it’s a thing. DH watched it with his gran when he was little but never bothered him as an adult.

Fair enough!
I think he’s doing ok
As you say, each to their own.

Lilacbloomers · 18/11/2024 22:30

Watch it every year and I’m 30

Notyouthful · 18/11/2024 22:30

I don’t watch it as it transmits as stuffing myself with turkey and DM hm pigs in blankets. It’s usually repeated about 9pm on BBC2

SuperfluousHen · 18/11/2024 22:33

I’m 65 I don’t watch it
( I don’t have a TV, but even if I did I wouldn’t watch it)

Scutterbug · 18/11/2024 22:34

I’m 50. Never ever watched it.

PointsSouth · 18/11/2024 22:38

I’m way over 50, as are many of my friends, and I don’t know anyone who has ever watched it since it was in black and white.

Printedword · 18/11/2024 22:42

It’s more the type of person/political views/world view etc. than age related. Never much of a thing in mine or DHs families and us and DC have never watched it or paid much attention to it

Secondclassstamps · 18/11/2024 22:42

I’m 70 and don’t watch it. I haven’t since I left home 50 years ago.

IHateWasps · 18/11/2024 22:44

I’ve never watched it and I doubt that I ever will because I can’t think of anything less appealing unless it involved camping in the depths of Winter while being forced to listen to Come On Eileen on a loop.

Norzilla · 18/11/2024 22:53

The speech was always a tradition in our house growing up and has continued with DH and I ( both ex military so likely more patriotic than most younger people) .
For us it is a very British tradition.

TulipTuesday · 18/11/2024 22:54

I’m under 50 and always watch it.

We’ve usually just finished eating and tidying the kitchen, so we sit down for the speech then go for a walk to break up the day ready for the afternoon’s drinking festivities.

GiddyRobin · 18/11/2024 22:59

Im 34 and never watched it in my life. Actively avoid it.

Come from a working class Irish family, probably no longer classed as working class (but I am), Scandi DH and it's just not something we'd even dream of.

housemaus · 18/11/2024 23:00

I'm 33 and never watched it. I think my mum maybe does if it's a Christmas we're not at hers, but she never does when I'm there.

Grmumpy · 18/11/2024 23:04

OVer 50 and I never watch it. I quite liked the Queen ( in comparison with someone like Boris Johnson getting the top.job in a republic). I am not particularly royalist but can’t take to Charles and find myself saying but she’s not the queen when people talk about Queen Camilla.

JustinThyme · 18/11/2024 23:11

The last family members to watch it were our grandmothers - one died in 1988, the other in 2003. My parents never did, nor do I and I’m over 50.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 18/11/2024 23:14

Reading this thread, it really does seem that people who watch the speech do so because it’s a tradition, part of their Christmas schedule etc, but not because they want to.

we didn’t grow up watching it so it wouldn’t occur to me to put it on, there’s often highlights as clips on news the next day or so, it’s never been anything particularly interesting/thought provoking or new information.

honestasever · 18/11/2024 23:17

Over 50 and we don’t watch the TV on Christmas Day at all.

Mama2many73 · 18/11/2024 23:24

53 and have never watched the queen/kings speech. Gonna admit I didn't even know it happened until i was in my teens.
Not anti royal or anything, just never happened in out household. My DPs would have been 81 this yr and I don't believe they had watched it either.

MissTrip82 · 18/11/2024 23:28

45 and I’ve never watched it.

My father was born in the 1920s and also never watched it.

evtheria · 18/11/2024 23:28

I've never watched the Queen/King's speech.
I'm British, but only been in UK 15yrs, and I don't support the monarchy so not a surprise, really.
