My partner has had 3 major seizures last weekend in the space of 22 hours out of know where. Young fit healthy man They just came over him all of a sudden his bloods mri and ct scan have came Back normal his consultant has said he probably had an infection and discharged him from hospital with epilepsy medication and told not to drive for a year. Has any one ever had this happen to them befor. He had a bad flu 3 weeks before and took a long time to recover then the seizuress happend 4 days after he was better. It’s just not sitting right with me I feel we have been fobbed of by the hospital can anyone please message me Back if it is something that have heard of happening before thanks he was not giving any antibiotics either had his bloods came back clear

I would have expected a referral to a neurologist. They don’t know what caused those seizures - a temperature during flu could cause seizures? I can’t see why he’d have them, weeks after when he’s feeling better?

Jben4176 · 16/11/2024 17:54

Thanks for getting back to me it’s so strange and we are freaked out that he had 3 in the 1 day he is on waiting list to see a neurologist. It’s just not sitting right with me the
doc saying probably an infection

I suffer from non epileptic attack disorder which are non epileptic seizures caused by significant stress rather than disturbances in brain patterns. Just because they are not epilepsy , does not mean they should be dismissed or that the person having them can help it. Glad he is on the list to see a neurologist who will hopefully do an EEG to rule in /out epilepsy.
Because mine are stress related I have been prescribed an anti depression medication rather than epilepsy medicine.
if he is unfortunate enough to have another one , once he is in a safe position eg head protected with a pillow , if you can video it for the neurologist, do so . It can be very helpful for diagnosis. Don’t try to restrain or put anything in their mouth. DM me if you like .

I would expect a brain MRI and EEG.

Rhayader · 16/11/2024 18:25

My 11yo has unexplained seizures that started with Covid. Was it definitely flu?

fdwthuj · 16/11/2024 18:57

Has he also had an ECG?

Heart issues can sometimes be mistaken for epilepsy.

Jben4176 · 16/11/2024 19:11

We dont know if it was definitely flu he was just floored for 3 weeks with flu liek symptoms was getting better then sick again maybe it was covid. thanks for your reply’s it’s made me feels a bit better. I had to video the second seizure that went on for longer than 5 minutes it was horrendous. He has had 2 ecg a mri scan an ct scan. One doctor wanted to do a lumbar puncture then the new doctor took over a they refused to do it.

I think it possibly was covid he kept complaining his eyes was so sore to open and really bad headaches and shivers

Had similar with dh in the summer.
Except he was discharged with no medication. He's been reffered to see a neurologist but no idea how long we will be waiting for that.
I'm scared it will happen again cause we have no idea what caused it and test in a&e didn't show anything.

Jben4176 · 16/11/2024 21:15

Sounds exactly the same did his come from no where it’s so scary and we have a little boy am on Edge it’s going to happen around him I am am scared to leave them alone 😢

It sounds positive that the CT and MRI didn’t show anything.

Maybe get a follow up with your GP, ask for a referral to neurology (probably a long wait) and ask about continuous heart monitoring over a longer period rather than an ECG.

Was he told to inform the DVLA as well as to not drive for a year?

Was your DP also advised about things to be aware of like not getting over tired, or doing activities alone where other people aren’t around (like swimming, hiking etc)?

A person can also have epilepsy with stress as a trigger.

Yes I am aware of that . As other people have said there are various causes of seizures . My particular diagnosis was how the seizures manifested themselves and by the fact that epilepsy medication does nothing for them. In fact NEAD seems to be more often diagnosed by an absence of tests rather than a positive thing . It’s good the OP has managed to film one .

I know. I was just pointing out for those who may not be so familiar, that stress doesn’t exclusively mean non-epileptic seizures, which could have been a logical interpretation from your comment. In many cases, a particular reason may not be found.

Starsandclouds · 16/11/2024 22:36

@Jben4176 - so sorry you went through this. My 18 year old had a couple of seizures last year and I know how utterly terrifying it is. Some facts that might reassure you -

  • Anyone can have a seizure, 1 in 20 of us will have one in our lifetimes
  • ’Epilepsy’ is a diagnosis given to a patient who has more than 2 seizures without a clear trigger such as a head injury. It’s a diagnosis that can change once a certain period of time has passed etc.
  • 70 percent of patients find medication stops the seizures completely- my dd has now been seizure free for over a year.

Interestingly, both times my dd had seizures she’d been unwell with a flu type bug, the second time was Covid (and possibly the time first too). One of the doctors told me they have seen increased numbers of seizures in people with covid or those who’d recently had it…

Finally re tests - EEGs are pretty blunt tools and hospitals tend not to give mris for a single seizure. Always worth getting as many tests as possible though so push for them to put your mind at rest. Hopefully this was a one off - good luck OP xx

He's normally fit and healthy hasn't seen a doctor in years. It's really scary I haven't slept properly since it happened. We have 4 children 17, 7, 3, 2 my daughter 17 saw and filmed one of the seizures and she's also finding it difficult to sleep.
Hope you find out what's going on.
