To serve dc smoked salmon slices that are 2 days past use by date

It's been unopened in the fridge but the use by date is 13.11. They are looking forward to it. I am a vegetarian so nit confident thst I'd be able to tell if it's off. It looks the way it always does. Dc are 3 and 6.

Would it help to cook it?

No I personally wouldn’t serve any meat/ fish that was out of date.
I’m assuming it says use by instead of best before?

Jollyjoy · 15/11/2024 18:15

I wouldn’t do it with kids. I’m also veggie though so not a font of knowledge! But they may not be able to fight off any developing bugs as adults would.

ssd · 15/11/2024 18:15

Why dont you eat it??

Pandasnacks · 15/11/2024 18:16

No, they're kids and it's 2 days past it's use by date. If it was best before then maybe, but no.

felissamy · 15/11/2024 18:16

I did it the other day....it was fine fir us and even older.

MummyDummyNow · 15/11/2024 18:18

I would eat it and give it to the children. It's smoked so it's not like uncooked raw meat if you see what I mean.

Everydayimhuffling · 15/11/2024 18:18

It's smoked to preserve it. It'll be fine.

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 15/11/2024 18:18

It’s smoked - preserved!

Earlier today I ate marinated anchovies that were about 3 weeks out of date. Again, preserved.

Wouldn’t even occur to me to not eat your smoked salmon.

RandomUserStuff · 15/11/2024 18:19

Yes, it's use by date

Yep, serve with lemon and dill. Two days unopened will be fine.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 15/11/2024 18:20

I would if its unopened and doesn't smell off. You'll know if it smells weird

oakleaffy · 15/11/2024 18:22

@RandomUserStuff I had this issue with salmon 🍣 24 h past use by.

I didn’t risk it, even for dog .

Fish is very risky.

Absolutely not for children!!

Stormyweatheroutthere · 15/11/2024 18:23

Over Xmas we just use the salmon until it's gone. Sometimes a week past the date. It's smoked. It's fine.. But is this a stealth boast op? Salmon for 2 small dc...

whatisforteamum · 15/11/2024 18:23

No as a chef I wouldn't.
As a parent I wouldn't risk food poisoning on my dcs.
Go to the chippy if needs be.

Arran2024 · 15/11/2024 18:23

It will be fine. These dates are really conservative. A couple of days is fine imo.

RandomUserStuff · 15/11/2024 18:19

I googled and salmon particularly isn’t safe.

Mine was just 24 hrs old but wouldn’t risk it after reading online stuff on food safety.

sprigatito · 15/11/2024 18:24

If it looks and smells normal, then I would both eat it and serve it to my children. Dates are a very poor indicator and they lead to a lot of unnecessary food waste.

minipie · 15/11/2024 18:25

I would. I have a pretty lax approach to use by dates and go off smell and look. Smoked salmon will be fine.

Chef’s advice I’d take, @RandomUserStuff .
i know it’s a waste, but having very sick children isn’t worth it.

It’s probably not smoked, but slices 🍣?
Still wouldn’t- but I detest vomiting!

Xrayspexxx · 15/11/2024 18:27

i wouldn’t.

WeeOrcadian · 15/11/2024 18:30

Sniff it first, if it smells fine, crack on

romdowa · 15/11/2024 18:31

If in doubt I'd just toss it. Food poisoning from fish can be pretty serious

RandomUserStuff · 15/11/2024 18:39

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate people making the effort to help a random stranger. 😃

I'd googled it but still wasn't sure but it looks like most posters wouldn't risk it so I'm going to throw it away. Didn't know you need to be particularly careful with salmon.
