To serve dc smoked salmon slices that are 2 days past use by date

RandomUserStuff · 15/11/2024 18:14

It's been unopened in the fridge but the use by date is 13.11. They are looking forward to it. I am a vegetarian so nit confident thst I'd be able to tell if it's off. It looks the way it always does. Dc are 3 and 6.

Would it help to cook it?

It’s probably not smoked, but slices 🍣?
Still wouldn’t- but I detest vomiting!

It says smoked.

I know it makes me more cautious having done food hygiene level 3 and most restaurants I know will use judgement on most things.
However some meats, fish shellfish can cause severe illness so why would you risk it.
Kids could be ill for a week.

goldenshred · 15/11/2024 18:44

Please don't. It might be fine, but if its not it can be really bad and extremely painful.

Why dont you eat it??

Why don't you read the OP?? 😉

Funkyslippers · 15/11/2024 18:46

I've eaten smoked salmon a week out of date a few times & I was fine

Arran2024 · 15/11/2024 18:50

Someone on another thread ate pork 8 days out of date and seems to be OK! Food doesn't go out of date on the stroke of midnight and they have to build some contingency in.

@RandomUserStuff I had this issue with salmon 🍣 24 h past use by.

I didn’t risk it, even for dog .

Fish is very risky.

Absolutely not for children!!

Edited

Poor dog.

Over Xmas we just use the salmon until it's gone. Sometimes a week past the date. It's smoked. It's fine.. But is this a stealth boast op? Salmon for 2 small dc...

And they were going to have kale with it.. 😉

Both kids love smoked salmon. I'm not sure why because it smells horrible but between them they can finish a 100g pack of smoked salmon in a single meal (as a side). I'd love to give them more than once a week but I worry about the mercury content.

It's funny because Dd6 is quite severely underweight abd we really struggle to get enough calories into her but her natural preferences are very healthy. She loves most vegetables and would happily eat just greens and cucumber. She just finished all of her kale, had seconds and then nicked her brother's...you need to eat a lot of kale (and cucumbers) though to get enough calories in...

I would absolutely eat this. Smoked fish is preserved!

Fountofwisdom · 15/11/2024 18:57

It’s smoked and it’s vacuum packed, it is fine. I would eat it and I would serve it to children. People are ridiculous about BB dates and use by dates. What do you think people used to do before we had this H&S nonsense?? Just use common sense! Smoked salmon will be fine.

Can't you read? She's vegetarian.

BoobyDazzler · 15/11/2024 19:01

Red meat - fine if it smells okay
chicken no.
fish NO

BuzzieLittleBee · 15/11/2024 19:02

Smoked salmon will be absolutely fine. It's preserved.

Normal, raw salmon would be different (in that I wouldn't feed it to small kids if it was 2 days over), but smoked will be fine 2 days after the date.

I've never eaten smoked salmon (vegetarian) so my common sense in this case tells me not to trust my senses. :-)

I hate meat. I find it so stressful because I'm never sure if I've nuked it enough. I can't even give it to dh because his stomach is even more delicate than that of the kids...With vegetables or grains I don't even look at the use by or best by date.

This. What do people think happens? The clock strikes midnight and the food goes from fine to suddenly able to make you sick? It's smoked and preserved. People have lost the ability to use any common sense. If it looks and smells fine, it's not off. If it's in date and looks funky or smells, it's not ok.
Improper storage, cooking and hygiene is what will cause food poisoning, not preserved salmon 48 hours after the supplier suggests you use it by.

TheKeatingFive · 15/11/2024 19:05

If it smells okay then absolutely fine

samarrange · 15/11/2024 19:07

From memory, when smoked salmon arrives at the supermarket it has about 10 days left on the use-by. On that basis, I would happily eat it for at least 50% after that time. Sniff it and if it smells OK, go ahead.

(Of course, it's easy for people to say NEVER EVER EVER EVER go over the date, but that's not going to help OP.)

Wendysfriend · 15/11/2024 19:10

Everyone's stomachs are different, even if someone here says oh I had a pack of in my fridge since 1990 and it looked ok because I don't go by dates and dates are for mugs and they ate the fish and gave it to their family and their 200 year old granny and she was fine, it doesn't mean your kids will. You can't tell yourself if it's off and smoked hides smells. Best throw it away don't chance it on your kids tummy's.

OneBlackHeart · 15/11/2024 19:10

For smoked salmon yes I would use a few days past use by date

Supersimkin7 · 15/11/2024 19:15

Preserved salmon, which is what you have, is fine.

LemongrassLollipop · 15/11/2024 19:16

I would.
It's unopened so still in it's protective packaging. I'm not sure of the name but they pump in inert gas to stop the food spoiling. That's why there's a difference as to whether it's opened or not.

Interested to know how you serve it to your kids 😀

Nosleepforthismum · 15/11/2024 19:17

It’s fine. I’d give my three year old it (if I thought there was any bloody chance of him eating it) without a second thought. I’ve eaten it well over a week after its use by date many times (as I used to buy the reduced ones as a student) with no ill effects.

Whatsitreallylike · 15/11/2024 19:20

No. I’ve had way too much meat recently that’s gone off BEFORE it’s due by date! Smoked salmon has quite a strong smell anyway so it’s be hard to tell until it was truly rancid.

No way I’d risk it with kids, sorry!

I don't do anything with it really. Just plonk it on a plate and they eat it as a side with some sort of main dish (today it was vegetable rice). When dh serves smoked salmon he usually makes some fancy concoction involving eggs, mustard and all kinds of other stuff. They like that as well.

Smoked salmon lasts weeks past the sell by date. I've eaten smoked salmon more than a month past the date. It's got a very high salt content which preserves it.
