Dupes

Just seen a girl wearing some lovely shoe/slippers, look like UGGs when I got close saw they were UGG branded & knew you were talking about £150. I had ask her where she got them from she said they were dupes from a dupe site cost £21. I said not sure I agree with that would rather do without. I don’t mind something similar in Aldi that is duped but to buy branded stuff that you know is a dupe is a different thing. She said coming from China, she talked about cost of living crisis. She said everyone is doing it at the school gates
YANBU= no to branded dupes
YABU. = yes to branded dupes

If it's got the branding on, is it not just counterfeit?

ForeverPombear · 15/11/2024 17:49

She likes the style, she can't afford the branded version so I can't see the problem myself.

I'm not going to get into where it's made etc because even branded versions are made in China and also in other countries by children etc so I don't think that's part of this argument.

TTPDTS · 15/11/2024 17:50

A "dupe" isn't branded like what it's trying to emulate, that's the point. A "dupe" is something similar but way cheaper.

If it's got fake branding on them it's a fake, not a dupe!

I'm team yes to dupes, no to fakes.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 15/11/2024 17:52

Personally, I'd rather pop to Primark and spend £15 on a similar pair and know what to expect quality wise, than £21 and not know if they will last the week, never mind the season.

Fake designer bags make me feel sad. Not really sure what the point of them is. Again, I'd rather spend the money on non branded, or save and get the real thing.

Currently half way to a YSL bag I've got my eye on!

Dior uses underpaid workers in poor conditions too as does LV so the whole reps made in China thing doesn't wash with me anymore. I think all workers are exploited now.

There's some brands that make the ethics of their supply chain a selling point - I look for brands that at the very least are manufactured in Europe.

You approached her and asked. YABU for giving someone a random lecture. Nobody is making you do anything.

I didn’t lecture her just said not sure I could buy them knowing they are fakes. No hostility. She said everyone was doing it. It Can be part of organised crime rather go without myself. Looking similar from Regatta..

She’s probably talking about DHgate. Counterfeit stuff. There’s not really anything you can’t find on there. Some of it is very hard to tell apart from the “real” brand.

BB78910 · 15/11/2024 21:59

I've always said to myself, if I can't afford it I'd rather just not have it. Nobody would say a word if I wore high street all over but pretending to have a designer lifestyle is just not for me.

I do have those uggs (real) but I tend to make a list of those higher ticket (£100 not £5000) items and give to DP around birthday / Christmas / anniversary.
