Why are people boycotting Boots? Are you?

For full disclosure I haven't seen the advert yet, but I'll probably end up searching for it if I don't come across it naturally during viewing in the next few days.

I've seen the #boycottboots and have worked out it's to do with their new Christmas ad. What's the issue? Are you boycotting Boots or do you think people are overreacting?

Randomly choosing the poll options simply because as stated I've not seen the ad so I don't currently have an opinion either way

YABU I'm boycotting
YANBU it's an overreaction

The actress is black, she said the royal family on the balcony were terribly white,do you not understand?? Jesus wept.

She's also English, and it's her royal family. For fair comparison you should be comparing an African person criticising an African royal family, not an English person. And whether said African was being racist would indeed depend entirely on the context in which they said it. (PS, it is actually possible, indeed common, for an African citizen to be white, in case you're thinking of raising this.)

Oganesson118 · 14/11/2024 21:58

I’m not boycotting over an advert, but it is proper shit.

VanillaPlanifolia · 14/11/2024 21:58

SpudleyLass · 14/11/2024 18:52

I'm not boycotting, just hate their ''advantage card'' - its utterly useless.

I love the advantage card! Free lunches!

Serencwtch · 14/11/2024 21:59

Don't really see a problem with it. It's not to my taste - OTT glamour, make up & drag etc but it's a make up & beauty shop.

If you can have an all white TV advert then you can have an all black one too. Personally don't like drag but it's not the same as forcing TWAW ideology or men in women's spaces etc.

Yes!
Read the thread

Well as I've said I've actually watched the ad on you tube and at no time can I hear the actress refer to the RF that's why I'm wondering why everyone has gone batshit about a bloody xmas ad.
Life's too short tbh.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 14/11/2024 22:01

Well I haven't seen the advert (nor have I rtft - it's too long already), so I'm wandering into this blind.

I haven't shopped at Boots for ages. They closed the pharmacy counter at the only one I would ever regularly go to, and now that's not there, I get my prescriptions elsewhere. I can't think of a single thing to buy in Boots that isn't cheaper somewhere else.

I could open a peevery, I have so many peeves. I think I'm turning into a female Victor Meldrew sometimes. Is it just me or are so many things shite these days ?

No, it is not just you. I’ll join you in your Peevery 😀

To be fair, you are correct, drag isn't the same at all as TWAW, and forcing their way into women's spaces. I mentioned those as a response to the accusations of bigotry and homophobia that were being thrown around, because I don't consider drag queens or nonbinary peeps to be marginalised in any way, so I'm bemused when not being into drag or rolling eyes at pronouns is likened to racism or actual bigotry, because there is no real equivalence here.

If the worst thing that's ever happening to you as a "minority" is being misgendered or people saying you're doing womanface then you're extremely lucky. Women and black people aren't so lucky.

Loub1987 · 14/11/2024 22:11

Can’t say I’m particularly ‘woke’ but I thought the advert was fine, it was glittery and festive. Can’t really see how anyone would boycott Boots over it. It might not be to your taste but it was hardly offensive.

I agree drag is a lifestyle choice and we have every right to criticise it we think it silly. But multiple known fascists writing on propaganda site (x.com) owned by a billionaire fascist supporter who is now a part of the American government calling for a boycott of people employing said drag artistes is surely more frightening than merely ordinary people disliking a tedious form of acting.

no boycotting boots as there has been worse adverts but i did roll my eyes a bit at the hypocrisy. for a actress who criticised the royal family for not being diverse enough the advert she was in was next exactly truly diverse either excluding white men and the advert looking predominantly not white. just a minor eye roll though as like i said there have been worse adverts

Don’t be ridiculous.

Actors play parts. Fictional parts. It isn’t hypocrisy to play parts that veer from their personal pov or life.

She plays a WOMAN who is dealing with the jobs while a man sits back. That’s the humour that Boots expect us all to chuckle at.

And …. The Royal Family are v white. Fact. When she made the comment she was contrasting the balcony with what happened in the abbey. Which she was complimenting. And in the moment said ‘terribly white’. Obviously not meaning ‘terrible’ but ‘very’. In the way people say ‘awfully good’. Want the frothing swivel eyed right have dredged it up as a silly rallying call.

Which you seem to have answered.

VanillaPlanifolia · 14/11/2024 22:14

I was indifferent to it. I think the main lady might have been in holby city

I can't disagree with you there. I think Twitter is a hotbed of frothing, baiting, shit stirrers.

babyproblems · 14/11/2024 22:17

Who the hell would boycott a shop because there is a black lady in an advert on TV??? You cannot be serious.
There was me thinking it was 2024. Jesus Christ. Suddenly Trump being re-elected seems obvious then.

Lady Danbury in Bridgerton

And Casualty and seasons and major rolls for the Royal Shakespeare Co, National Theatre etc.

vegaspot · 14/11/2024 22:21

I avoid boots because it is expensive and too stressy. I haven’t seen any Christmas ads yet and really don’t care !

Matronic6 · 14/11/2024 22:22

I've been boycotting Boots for a few years as the customer service in store section and the chemist is terrible. Don't see anything wrong with the ad.

Samcro · 14/11/2024 22:22

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 19:05

And if a white actress said it about a black family? You must know that would be a completely different story.

i don’t get what you mean

Casualty that's the one. I've not seen Bridgerton. Glad she made it big in the theatre.

BESTAUNTB · 14/11/2024 22:24

The only live tv I watch is sports so I never see ads (I use the halftime ad break for rugby and football to make tea etc).

If this ad has the gammons frothing it must be good. I don’t need to see it to know that.

Dollybantree · 14/11/2024 22:26

Biffingtonclyro · 14/11/2024 18:39

Is that why?! I thought we were past that and it was because there were drag queens and theys and thems in it.

Based on this il comment be avoiding watching it, personally.

potatocakesinprogress · 14/11/2024 22:26

I'm boycotting Boots because I'm tired of all the smallest cheapest things having security tags on combined with them only having self-checkouts. It's a pain. Plus I prefer to shop in places where there are more till staff than security guards.

Also, Boots head office made their staff go into the office throughout covid completely unnecessarily, which is ridiculous for a supposed healthcare company.

TortillasAndSalsa · 14/11/2024 22:27

Can't boycott boots even if I wanted to as they are the only decent chemist for miles around where I live

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/11/2024 22:29

The Tommy Robinsons of this world are cynically exploiting this mistake.

The Tommy Robinson fans making a big ole racist, snowflakey show of themselves and promoting Boots in the process.🙈

mandes1 · 14/11/2024 22:30

ExhaustedHousewife · 14/11/2024 18:46

The leading lady said the royal balcony looked "too white" that's why people are boycotting, not because she's black but because of what she said.

I've seen this on Twitter (wish I hadn't) and yes it's mostly because she's black. It's too woke blah, blah blah. Also the drag queen's get a small mention but there's an awful lot of racism.
