RIP Roxie - fireworks death

Remembering the thread a little while ago about fireworks and all the people downplaying or arguing that animal owners should suck it up because the damage is not real or too bad. AIBU to think it is about time all fireworks be made silent ones and that you dont need lots of noise to enjoy them? And to the people who defended them because they like them - hope you are proud.

You can be upset and campaign for a ban on more than one thing you know?

My point being there are bigger priorities.

Dogs kill more kids and maim people more per year.

Sure, I do believe fireworks should be restricted but priorities.

Lets start with the dogs. Cull the dangerous breeds. No exceptions.

I think XLs should be culled. And that noise making fireworks should be banned. Dont see a conflict there.

Same. People don't have to pick one! I'd happily get rid of any dangerous dogs (I hate dogs full stops tbh) and only allow silent fireworks. OP, you are spot on. That news is horrible. It's not just animals that are terrified of fireworks either... I remember when my son was only a few months old and neighbours were setting fireworks off in their garden. It sounded like the explosions were right above our house (probably were). My baby boy was absolutely terrified, screaming at the top of their lungs. There was nothing I could do to comfort him and obviously he didn't undetstand what was happening. There is NO reason for anyone to make such a noise with fireworks. Anyone who continues to use them now that silent fireworks are an option are utterly selfish.

It isn't as if we can only work on one issue at a time... a large percentage of AIBU threads could be resolved with "many people don't have access to fresh water so YABU" if everyone took that approach.

Oh ffs what ridiculous logic. You could go on forever in this vein and never get anything done. There will always be something that someone considers to be a greater priority. Comments like this make me really despair.

Again, my point being there are people working quicker on fireworks but not their fucking Fido who has only mauled 3 toddlers this year.

Children are surely a priority over animals though?

Look I am too sad for the red panda but its weird how one red panda dies and all hell breaks loose.

Several children and adults die and we don't do anything?

Exactly. Just because there are bigger problems in the world doesn't mean we should ignore every other less significant issue! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Pumpkinsoup24 · 14/11/2024 18:55

Read the article! It died because it chocked on its sick....and it's parent had died 5 days earlier! Don't you think it will have been stressed from the parent dying? Funny how this zoo has a high number of animals dying. What was the excuse for the death of the chimp back in july?
Animals hear thunder and loud bangs all the time. Fireworks are no different! Also getting sick if people who defend fluffy cats and dogs and animals but bet they wouldn't have a clue about actual wildlife like birds and insects and what harms them. I don't see people protecting these species.l, why just the cute fluffy things.
The more people banf on about fireworks, the less I actually care what happens to these animals.

UmopapIsdn · 14/11/2024 18:55

This has left me heartbroken, poor wee floofball had recently lost her mum unexpectedly too I think her mum would have got her into the den safely. Just so sad.

Edinburgh Zoo has asked people to contact their MSPs to ask them to support a petition that’s been delivered to the UK government earlier this month. Since it’s a UK petition anyone could contact their MPs and ask them to support the petition on tightening restrictions.

So people can go to official events still and enjoy fireworks. There’s no need for people to be setting them off in their gardens.

My baby wasn't attacked by a dog at 6 months old as I didn't allow one near her.

You sure you want to go down this route?

There are countless threads on AIBU alone about dog attacks, there is also generally a new thread every time an attack is reported in the news.
I didn't think government was working on fireworks bans, not as far as I can see anyway, but they have started working on dangerous dogs (XL bully ban/muzzle requirement in public), and it seems to still be a popular issue. They are doing the opposite of prioritising fireworks, nothing at all is being done, for now!

I have not called you a name once.

Once again, my point is that people will prioritise the flufly animals over children.

There is going to be more children killed this year by dogs, than cute exotic animals killed - maybe- by fireworks.

My point was entirely about priorities.

What are you not understanding?

Lets be honest - they're not doing anything about XL bullies. Several people have been killed since the ''ban''

Erm... sorry to disappoint you, but my baby was attacked at 6 months old while sitting in its pram in a playground. Your comments do not make any sense! 🤣

We can get silent fireworks AND still tackle the dog issue. It's not a case of one or the other! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I bet you still don't understand...

But silent fireworks or not won't have an impact on that!!! 😂

Oh NO - please don't report me on mumsnet... however will I cope? 🙄

The bottom line is, your points make absolutely no sense and are utterly absurd.

UpstartCrows · 14/11/2024 18:43

Don't ignore the negative comments. Get a grip instead and think about bigger issues effecting the world right now.

Don't use the death of one animal to beat people over the head with for daring to have a small amount of enjoyment in an otherwise fairly bleak world. Its just self righteous virtue signalling aggrandizing.

The get a grip comment applies equally in reverse. Yes, life is hard for a lot of people right now, but fireworks are not the one tiny source of happiness in life. Life will go on without them.

Fireworks cause real problems for different groups and I’m not sure why that isn’t worth considering too if we’re talking about quality of life and how tough life is. It isn’t virtue signalling to want a ban. Or at least limits and restrictions; I think a lot of us are simply fed up with how loud they are, which is a relatively recent development. Reduce the noise level and I think fewer people would be so strongly anti-firework.

You're right, it won/t

Like people don't care about children or something.

Like you using your baby being attacked as a gotcha against me. Which is is very odd, by the way.

Yes statistically, its more likely that your baby will be mauled by a mutt than a mutt will be killed by a fire work.

Are you getting my point, yet?
