My daughter goes to secondary where they are very strict about uniform. The dress code is: white shirt, a school-provided tie, a school-provided blazer and black trousers and black shoes. The PE uniform dress code: a school-provided red PE top, a school-provided 1/4 zip, school-provided bottoms (for boys and girls) or girls could wear plain black leggings. But my daughter loves to wear black leggings as normal everyday bottoms. Apparently you could get proper consequences if they catch you wearing anything other than the dress code. But the school staff hasn't found out, and also apparently my daughter says its 'easier to iron', which it admittedly is.
