What is the obsetion with leggings in school?

My daughter goes to secondary where they are very strict about uniform. The dress code is: white shirt, a school-provided tie, a school-provided blazer and black trousers and black shoes. The PE uniform dress code: a school-provided red PE top, a school-provided 1/4 zip, school-provided bottoms (for boys and girls) or girls could wear plain black leggings. But my daughter loves to wear black leggings as normal everyday bottoms. Apparently you could get proper consequences if they catch you wearing anything other than the dress code. But the school staff hasn't found out, and also apparently my daughter says its 'easier to iron', which it admittedly is.

Jogging bottoms and a hoodie are practical and comfy, but you wouldn’t be allowed to wear them to school. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for school to ban leggings and insist on proper trousers.

LlynTegid · 13/11/2024 19:58

I am concerned that leggings in general (and some other clothing) hides weight gain for some people. Given the level of overweight and obese people in the UK, I support anything to discourage them being other than for sport (as an alternative to shorts).

Sia8899 · 13/11/2024 20:00

Leggings are really comfy. I can understand why kids want to wear comfy fabric for 35 hours a week. Never heard of anyone ironing leggings though!

Franjipanl8r · 13/11/2024 20:00

Teens blazers and school uniform is so synthetic and uncomfortable and sweaty nowadays. It’s all made of plastic fibres, expensive, terrible for the environment and awful for kids going through puberty.

For secondary in the 90s we could wear loose cotton trousers, a cotton polo shirt and cotton sweater. I’m SO glad I never had to wear a tie or disgusting blazer.

Soonenough · 13/11/2024 20:01

Perhaps she has gotten away with it because this isn't a battle the Head wants to take on.

Everything went to shit in covid and they couldn't change for PE in case they all caught covid in the dressing room so had to go in in pe clothes

I understand that but leggings were never allowed even for PE and they don't have PE every day. It just seemed crazy to ban leggings before and after but not during COVID. I must admit I love leggings too, so comfortable so can't blame children for wanting to wear them.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 13/11/2024 20:38

Uniform is formal wear, leggings are not.

LaughingLemur · 13/11/2024 20:40

Leggings are allowed at our school and most girls wear them. So much more comfortable and takes away all the arguments over skirt length.

another1bitestheduck · 13/11/2024 20:52

who cares? if there are 'proper consequences' they are for her to deal with. I'm sure they'd probably give her a warning for the first instance and she can pretend she spilled something on her trousers and had to change last minute or whatever. It would be a bit draconian if they went immediately into suspension for the first incident.

I can understand why they would have the rule - I've seen people wear leggings so thin you can see the label on their knickers, and that's obviously inappropriate for school (inappropriate for everywhere tbh). But if she hasn't been caught yet hers likely look very similar to tight-fit trousers, in which case carry on and if she gets into trouble it's for her to consider whether it's worth it.

Although I've never heard of ironing leggings!

Futurethinking2026 · 13/11/2024 20:56

Wouldn’t get through the gates in our school with leggings on. Even trousers that a ‘too skinny in the leg’ get sent home.

coxesorangepippin · 13/11/2024 20:56

Oh god I just can't

It's obsession

Like the perfume

@WinterBones Some people have dyslexia. Not being picky/horrible. Just think of it as a teaching moment.

Also you may need to work on your use of parentheses...

Edited

Did she use parenthesis? I thought it was a 'sideways' emoticon.

Lovelysummerdays · 13/11/2024 21:01

I know I’m getting old as I drove past the high school the other day and thought that someone should start enforcing the uniform code. I’m sure we didn’t have such tiny skirts in my day. Of maybe we did.

I sort of think you’ve got to let them get in with it in high school . DS has various minor rebellions. White sports socks with black trousers and shoes. A navy jumper that looks almost black instead of an actual black one. A logo less tie which can’t see on under a jumper, not all at once. The teachers don’t seem to care or maybe he’s worn them down.

Your daughter is wearing comfortable, weather appropriate clothing to school. Any policy that has a problem with that is a policy that needs to be reviewed.

You think that all school uniforms should allow leggings? Leggings are not the only 'weather appropriate' clothing.

I'm not even in favour of uniform really, but since when are people unable to cope with wearing normal clothes and having to wear the most super-comfy things at all times? It's a bit pathetic tbh.

Manchesterbythesea · 13/11/2024 21:17

In my dd16 school, leggings are completely banned and deemed the work of the devil. They would be sent home if they wore them in. The head thinks they are inappropriate! She must think the lads would be looking at them or maybe the male teachers might get distracted. The bum scrunch ones would tip her over the edge!

Toseland · 13/11/2024 21:21

Buy her some thick denier tights to wear with her school uniform instead?

The secondary school nearest me has a logo hoodie as uniform, and I think it looks great. The girls all wear it with leggings, and they look comfy and like kids. The school spend zero time on uniform policing nonsense. The next nearest school has kids who look like they are waitresses/salesmen, it looks awful, IMO.

gosh this absolute focus on what children wear to school is utterly batshit

Totally agree. So happy my son's secondary school lets them wear what they want as long as it's "decent"..

hairymotherplucker · 13/11/2024 19:37

It's It is = it's

Not being picky but it's a contraction, if you didn't know.

🤣

Meowingtwice · 13/11/2024 21:30

I like the thick tights idea. I think leggings don't look formal and I doubt it's worth picking a fight with the school over. It's useful for kids to learn to follow harmless rules and they can't always do what they want.

INeedAnotherName · 13/11/2024 21:31

Who irons leggings?? 🤔

mathanxiety · 13/11/2024 21:32

@Anonym00se
Weirdly, at this very juncture, the kids from my local (excellent) high school in the US are just getting out for the day, all heading home with their backpacks on their backs, and the vast majority, girls and boys alike, are wearing hoodies, sweatpants, and comfortable footwear, though there are a few hardy teenage boys wearing basketball style shorts with hoodies.

There is no inherent value in school uniforms.

Weather appropriate 🤣🤣

Really the main problem with leggings is that as they stretch over the arse they generally become see through, no-one needs to see that.

Pickingmyselfup · 13/11/2024 21:36

They are more comfortable than proper trousers so that's why they get worn, plus teenagers like to push the boundaries.

Obviously it hasn't been pulled up yet, maybe it's been spotted (likely) but it's not a battle the teachers want to pick for whatever reason. Maybe they are relaxing their rules on the uniform without actually officially relaxing it.

As a parent I would be reminding her of school uniform policies and making it clear if she got into trouble it's of her own doing.

why do you want kids at school to look formal rather than be comfy? (like the pp who mentioned hoodies with logos which the girls pair with leggings)
