What is the obsetion with leggings in school?

My daughter goes to secondary where they are very strict about uniform. The dress code is: white shirt, a school-provided tie, a school-provided blazer and black trousers and black shoes. The PE uniform dress code: a school-provided red PE top, a school-provided 1/4 zip, school-provided bottoms (for boys and girls) or girls could wear plain black leggings. But my daughter loves to wear black leggings as normal everyday bottoms. Apparently you could get proper consequences if they catch you wearing anything other than the dress code. But the school staff hasn't found out, and also apparently my daughter says its 'easier to iron', which it admittedly is.

I am concerned that leggings in general (and some other clothing) hides weight gain for some people. Given the level of overweight and obese people in the UK, I support anything to discourage them being other than for sport (as an alternative to shorts).

Shut, and I mean this, the absolute fuck up.

Pussycat22 · 13/11/2024 21:45

I thought it was obseshun!!!

why do you want kids at school to look formal rather than be comfy? (like the pp who mentioned hoodies with logos which the girls pair with leggings)

I don't want them to look formal. Not my rules. I think there's no harm in this rule being followed, its not something I'd pick my battle over.

Are you kidding me!? I used leggings to show off my size 8 waist and curvy (but toned) butt!!

I mean not now after the baby, they don't hide anything.

Bernadinetta · 13/11/2024 21:49

When you say “school-provided” about the tie, the blazer, the PE top and 1/4 zip etc, do you actually mean they’ve been provided by the school? Do you have to pay for them? Or do you mean they have the school logo but you buy them?

Octavia64 · 13/11/2024 21:51

Teacher.

I bloody hated enforcing school uniform.

That said, cheap leggings where you can see underwear through them are not suitable for school (yes we had a few girls who thought they were).

We even allowed black jeans at one point.

@WinterBones Some people have dyslexia. Not being picky/horrible. Just think of it as a teaching moment.

Also you may need to work on your use of parentheses...

I genuinely wasn't being horrible thanks, I'm not a grammar/spelling Nazi, what's wrong with letting someone know how a word is spelled if they might not know?

And you might want to work on your recognition of old fashioned text emotions
:) is a smile!

WinterBones · 13/11/2024 22:09

I don't think we were ever allowed to wear 'leggings' at school, even as PE kit.. we had the option of those awful Dance Tights things that were slightly shiny lycra for indoor PE/Trampolining.

I have shudders remembering the girls wearing their PE knickers over the top of them >.<

How haven’t they found out? Does she also wear an invisibility cloak? The staff can see her. They know. They obviously aren’t that strict.

So she's wearing leggings for normal classes? Instead of actual trousers? She'd get pulled up instantly at my place. They aren't smart wear and would look weird with a shirt and tie!

But why not, kids don’t need to look smart to learn do they? Our school allows 4th year and above to wear leggings of doing PE Nat ( as they have double PE every day. They wear with a sweatshirt shirt and tie and as far as I can see my dd intelligence has not been affected one little bit.

giggly · 13/11/2024 23:49

Nat 5 obviously

TwistedWonder · 13/11/2024 23:58

I’m so glad trousers weren’t compulsory when I was at school.

Like many with an hourglass or pear shape, finding good fitting trousers is a nightmare for me. I’m nearly 60 and I gave up trying out find trousers to fit my shape many years ago.

converseandjeans · 14/11/2024 09:20

If she is wearing leggings then I would not say they are obsessed or overly strict. Does she wear white sports socks too? Or possibly fluffy socks?

The school I work in used to be really strict on uniform & now we have students mostly in uniform but some in leggings or crocs or trainers. I don't know why but stricter uniform usually equates to better behaviour. It's bizarre but true. I think that it gives them something to rebel against?

I think leggings with a shirt & tie would however look really weird.

again - why why why do schools even have ties? What is the point? School uniform rules are absolutely batshit.

I also think it's telling that so many posters immediately jump to the "oh the cheap ones are see through" and "oh those butt munching ones are ugly"

bonkers.

I don’t think that someone with dyslexia will be helped much by having their mistakes pointed out one by one. They come here to share thoughts and ideas, not for an English lesson.

Needmorelego · 14/11/2024 09:35

@Brefugee I am anti uniform too. Really hate it.
But leggings with a formal shirt and tie would definitely look odd and I can't see how the school "wouldn't notice" 🤔
Reading some of these comments though I am wondering if some people are using the word "leggings" as a description for slim fit trousers while for others leggings are essentially thick black tights with no feet.

That was my point.

It isn't fair on people with dyslexia to pick apart their spelling. It must put them off using places like Mumsnet. It's just unnecessary.

Sorry I was agreeing with you. Might have replied to the wrong post.

Come and live in Scotland. School uniform encouraged but not compulsory (in state schools)

Most of the girls wear leggings, black jeans or (very) short skirts, with black & white Converse trainers. Practical, comfortable and staff can focus on educating the children, instead of endless arguments about uniform infringements

I happen to work in a school that is very strict and smart and it is a pain in the arse enforcing but whatever. I'd be just as happy with leggings and a sweatshirt but not the combination of leggings and a smart shirt. That would look really odd. And what shoes are they wearing with the leggings? I'll be honest that I like smart uniform but I can see the argument for casual...just not a mix of the two.

MothToAnInferno · 14/11/2024 15:15

My dd wears flared leggings to school every day. Their uniform is trousers, polo shirt and sweatshirt. They can wear whatever shoes they want, most of the girls are wearing uggs at the moment. The school doesn't care so long as they have an approximation of the uniform on its all good, the only time they care is if there is going to be an awards ceremony or something that will be photographed.

I think leggings are the least likely thing to hide weight gain. I wear them yes for sports but also at home as any other trousers press on my stomach
Even elastic waistband ones sometimes and it's painful

@Brefugee

Not sure really. My kids had tie from reception class & it did look smart. I think it either needs to be smart uniform or no uniform tbh. A scruffy half uniform probably looks worse than if they just wore their own clothes. I think a uniform is supposed to be a social leveller. My school I work in doesn't have ties (secondary school) & lots wear a jumper.

Marblesbackagain · 14/11/2024 16:07

I think it's ridiculous waste and annoying to see young children in ties. It really is so unfriendly to sensory sensitive children and a proper nuisance to get on them.

I am delighted our school is non uniform and the other options are bright soft child friendly tracksuits.

It's It is = it's

Not being picky but it's a contraction, if you didn't know.

Lol quite right!
