From the email:

”Very sadly, she choked on her vomit on bonfire night and our vets believe this was probably a reaction to fireworks. Roxie had access to her den but the frightening noises seem to have been too much for her. We are also concerned that fireworks cause stress to other animals in the zoo.

Fireworks can cause fear and distress for pets, livestock and animals in zoos, so it is essential that the UK government tightens restrictions. We support calls from animal welfare charities to ban the sale of fireworks to the public, with only light displays being permitted at organised events.”

I'm in the camp of organised displays only, not for personal sale

Laalaalaand · 14/11/2024 06:57

What evidence is there that the panda is dead because of fireworks? It vomited - animals vomit all the time for all sorts of reasons.

And knowing there's was going to be fireworks, why didn't the zoo staff take steps to protect it? Sounds like they were negligent.

Fireworks will never be banned. It's about time people got used to that.

Oh goodness that’s so sad.

I think it’s a case of knowing better now. I would love private sales to be banned. At least with organised displays you can make plans.

I have 3 dogs. One of them shakes and gets in a state. The others aren’t bothered.

it’s heartbreaking knowing the harm they can do (also Chinese lanterns/helium balloons)

it’s only humans who wilfully destroy habitat as some kind of birth right.

Never understood the setting a naked flame(Chinese lantern) into the big blue yonder with no thought of the damage it could cause.
Fireworks are a very different animal to what they once were some were so loud it was akin to a bomb going off.i don't think the powerful ones should be available to the public.

Do fireworks scare ants?

No idea.

Now perhaps you could answer my question.

That's a load of absolute nonsense. You don't know much about animals. See my post above.

Every single one of our cats including our current one is a rescue. Our dog was a rescue, not from a rescue centre. I know a lot about animals having had a number of different species over the years. They have all responded the same. Why is that I wonder?

Selfish human behaviour once again. I fear for our future children if the parents are always this selfish. Me me me attitude.

So fireworks are bad but owning a domesticated animal is environmentally responsible?

Why don't you research the dangers to wildlife of monthly dog and cat worming treatments? I buy fireworks and set them off on one day.

Do fireworks scare ants?

Probably!

pinkpjamas1 · 14/11/2024 12:26

I don't and never would. Because I'm not a selfish, thoughtless arsehole.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/11/2024 12:33

We used to buy back garden fireworks, generally not very loud or noisy.
People who think they should be confined to big displays, might reflect that these are the very occasions when a lot of massively loud bangs occur.

OP, are you still at it. You’re obsessed. Get help.

Just got an email from MN to check back in with this thread and read all your replies. Wow! I didn’t expect it to take off like this. I guess all I have to say is:

i cannot believe how many of you do not know there is a difference between a panda and a red panda

What difference does it make? Isn't your issue an animal may have died due to fireworks?

Thanks. I’ve just signed too.

Where do you draw the line though?

No holidays that involve planes?

No balloons?
