https://mailchi.mp/58291132e1c5/red-panda-update-from-edinburgh-zoo-5799234

From the email:

”Very sadly, she choked on her vomit on bonfire night and our vets believe this was probably a reaction to fireworks. Roxie had access to her den but the frightening noises seem to have been too much for her. We are also concerned that fireworks cause stress to other animals in the zoo.

Fireworks can cause fear and distress for pets, livestock and animals in zoos, so it is essential that the UK government tightens restrictions. We support calls from animal welfare charities to ban the sale of fireworks to the public, with only light displays being permitted at organised events.”

Its only the past 10 years or so dogs have started pissing themselves under the dining table like theres a war on.

i think dogs in general have got more neurotic and anxious in recent years. But that’s another thread/argument , plenty of dog threads on here lol don’t mean to derail this one about fireworks and pandas!

Indeed its a tenuous link. Nobody wants a dead panda but you cant ban fireworks cos of that.

ZeldaFighter · 13/11/2024 20:09

I love them and always have. Letting a box of fireworks off in my garden takes me back to the happy times of my childhood. We always have friends round to share the fun with us.

Our rodents were unbothered.

BlueMoanday · 13/11/2024 20:12

Because I love them. They give me joy in a shitty, shitty world.
I don't care if a neurotic dog is scared.

My stonking great family Alsatian was absolutely terrified. He couldn't get closer to my mum if he tried. Shaking the whole time and we did everything to help him

60 years ago when fireworks were much quieter

Nanny0gg · 13/11/2024 20:13

There are some horrible people in this world

For many, many reasons

retinolalcohol · 13/11/2024 20:14

I don't and never would. I actually hated them even as a kid because of the noise.

Every bonfire night I find myself developing a hatred for selected neighbours - absolutely no consideration for the surrounding animals. I have two rabbits who are terrified every time despite living inside - it equally terrifies me as it's not unheard of for rabbits to die of fright.
Everyone's dogs going mental.

I don't mind organized displays so much but people who let them off in their garden want to have a word with themselves - if for no other reason than them being dangerous!

TheWittyBird · 13/11/2024 20:15

I have a terrified dog and other thing to spend my money on , like food

Wehavealaughdontwe · 13/11/2024 20:16

You could argue that locking animals in cages to be gawped at by humans is worse than fireworks

BillPurchase · 13/11/2024 20:18

Wehavealaughdontwe · 13/11/2024 20:16

And in the craze of the past 20 years of dog cages in the home.

Beautifulweeds · 13/11/2024 20:21

Our beloved dog was a quivering mess with fireworks, as are poor animals everywhere. There needs to be a small timeframe of max 3 days. They do seem to have become less as Halloween has taken over more, but still too much. We used to love doing our own fireworks and behind that thought was that they are going off everywhere anyway, now we don't. X

TickingAlongNicely · 13/11/2024 20:22

I think some people are confusing Guant Pandas (the Chinese Black and white animal) with red pandas, which are a similar size to a cat. Majorly cute, but not as endangered.

I'm on the committee that organises our Village display... our supplier isn't going to supply to the public after this year. Just direct orders from small displays like ours

Incidentally, our nearby zoo has fireworks in summer as part of the concert series.

tillyandmilly · 13/11/2024 20:28

I like them but they need to be altered sound wise - they are too high in decibels these days - they never used to be so loud in the 80’s! I hate the sound of them but love watching them

Chan9eusername · 13/11/2024 20:38

My cats didn't notice at all. One of them is a more nervy rescue cat, she happily pottered around outdoors.

I wonder if some people aren't closing windows/doors? I could barely hear them inside.

BoredZelda · 13/11/2024 20:55

This is a great argument for why we shouldn't have wild animals caged up in the middle of the city.

Playingintheshadow · 13/11/2024 20:57

Circumferences · 13/11/2024 18:32

Poor panda. That's very sad.

Perhaps I agree with no fireworks right next to a zoo.

But not for the rest of us don't be daft.

It's not only zoo animals who are distressed by them!

I hate them. I never have and never will buy them.

BoredZelda · 13/11/2024 20:58

I think they should only have organised public displays and think carefully about where they have them.

Ever tried to get to an organised display with a wheelchair? They are the least accessible things to go to. Not everyone can make it.

Playingintheshadow · 13/11/2024 21:00

BillPurchase · 13/11/2024 19:33

Stick them in a soundproof booth.

Here the animal died on bonfire night which is the main night that most organised displays take place, so its pointless asking why a minority of people buy a few whizz poppers from Asda that are as loud as a fart.

WTF does one get a "soundproof booth"??!

That sounds incredibly risky. Once false move and they'll have a PR nightmare.

Alright we get it you have good windows

Surelyitscoffeetime · 13/11/2024 21:11

Because we have no other forms of entertainment and bonfire night is one of the handful of nights of the year when families get together.

Oh scratch that, forgot we’re not living in the 1800s when that was the case.

haje · 13/11/2024 21:21

@Newdaynewstarts ????

Like when did it open in Edinburgh. About 1913. But I feel that's not a real question?

It's always going to be one of those things everyone has a personal interest in.

For me, we host one and live exceptionally rural. Sheep, horses, cattle, pigs, alpacas, dogs, cats, none could care less.

However, I have had to sadly, rehome a dog who was triggered by random gun shots, to a dangerous level, in a shooting valley. We tried everything. She also hated alarms and phones. Hearing was checked as fine. Yet would lie happily watching fireworks.

I would ban both fireworks and zoos. It never ceases to amaze me what the general public thinks is entertaining. Silly bangs and fizzles and gawping at poor caged animals. Hopefully humans will go extinct at some point and a life form with more intelligence will take our place.
