From the email:

”Very sadly, she choked on her vomit on bonfire night and our vets believe this was probably a reaction to fireworks. Roxie had access to her den but the frightening noises seem to have been too much for her. We are also concerned that fireworks cause stress to other animals in the zoo.

Fireworks can cause fear and distress for pets, livestock and animals in zoos, so it is essential that the UK government tightens restrictions. We support calls from animal welfare charities to ban the sale of fireworks to the public, with only light displays being permitted at organised events.”

I agree a city is a silly place to have a zoo

You do know there are firework displays in the countryside too? (sadly)

VanillaPlanifolia · 13/11/2024 19:31

stayathomer · 13/11/2024 19:31

But there’s animals everywhere so why are people saying just don’t do them next to the zoo?!?!?

Because they only care about endangered pandas

Hopefully not next to zoos though?

Explain, in detail, how you'd do that?

People can't even keep their pets calm with medication, closed curtains and white noise

Stick them in a soundproof booth.

Here the animal died on bonfire night which is the main night that most organised displays take place, so its pointless asking why a minority of people buy a few whizz poppers from Asda that are as loud as a fart.

There were private displays near me (village) not on bonfire night that sounded like depth charges going off

Yanbu op fireworks are awful.

I'm surprised no one has pointed out that zoos and animal agriculture ('livestock') are both terrible for animals too.

The things humans do to animals are truly appalling and it breaks my heart.

Nanny0gg · 13/11/2024 19:35

I just think animals are more important than an hour of pretty, sparkly colours and loud noises,

Snoopdoggydog123 · 13/11/2024 19:35

Because its cheaper and because my daughter doesn't like crowds.

Bumbleebeetree · 13/11/2024 19:36

I agree with you. I wish people would stop putting themselves and their fun before the environment and animals.

I used to love fireworks as a child but I find it difficult not to think about the impact on wildlife and other animals now. I wish they were quiet... I think it would make them a lot less frightening for animals!

QueenBitch666 · 13/11/2024 19:37

Only selfish bastards buy fireworks

Yeah. They should probably get some sort of soundproofing in for next year though as it's not going to stop people. They don't care how many pandas they kill as long as they can let off a big massive explosive legally

NeonGreenHighlighter · 13/11/2024 19:39

Honestly as someone who lives in Edinburgh I ask myself the same thing every year. Why do we still have access to such things?

The news story is relevant. I don’t know what it’s like in other cities, but Edinburgh is getting worse by the year for the abuse of fireworks. This year I couldn’t attend my offices as staff would not have got home by public transport (buses were stopped from coming by) taxis refused to serve the area and our cars were at risk from the impending violence that happened that evening.
Roads were closed, fires were started next to petrol stations, fireworks were posted in peoples doors. All this rioting involved children and adults.
this, tied in with animals (the zoos and pets) are in shock , dying and suffering, all because humans are able to purchase small explosives and burn their money away.

it costs everyone. It needs to end

A bit of a joyless approach. People like them and they're legal.

Here's about £15 quids worth of rocket.

Where's the joy in a fucking dead panda?

Depends how binary your thinking is. I'd ask whats a fucking living panda doing in Scotland.

I mean I've already also queried if a panda should be living in Edinburgh. But it did and now it's dead. So woop..

Orangelight23 · 13/11/2024 19:42

I'd be more inclined to say that we shouldn't have zoos tbh.

I don't think it's an either or thing

Zanatdy · 13/11/2024 19:45

I do judge people who hold home displays with zero regard for pets and wildlife. Its selfish behaviour and many people agree with that. But like most things in life, people are inherently selfish and don’t care how their actions impact on others. Legal or not.

NeonGreenHighlighter · 13/11/2024 19:45

On the zoo theme, I don’t like the zoo, and I hate the events they do there, the animals hide away during light shows and weddings , it’s just all a bit shit really.

NissanNancy · 13/11/2024 19:49

i think there is a time and place for fireworks - and that’s on bonfire night preferably at an organised display. I think this year we have had 3 solid weeks of fireworks going off every night and tonight’s the first night in ages that I’ve not heard any. If it was restricted to one evening then at least people with animals have a fighting chance to minimise the impact on them but it’s just become excessive now?

theresabluebirdinmyheart · 13/11/2024 19:51

It’s a tragedy but aren’t pandas from China? A country known for its love of fireworks? I’d be interested to know how the panda there cope.
