IKEA rant

Having spent 9 hours at IKEA last weekend buying a wardrobe I have spent this weekend putting it together. No problems until the DOORS.

I got the doors out of the packaging and there was no hinges or instructions.

I have now looked on the website and it says 'hinges are included in the price but come in a separate package'. I didn't realise this in the store so obviously didn't look for them. Extremely annoying.

Now - AIBU in thinking that when an item comes in two packages and only one package goes through the till it would flag up to say one bit is missing? Also nowhere on the shop floor or the warehouse was there anything (or anything obvious anyway) to say the doors consist of two packs each.

Have phoned Customer Services and the advisor wrongly insisted that the hinges were a separate item and costs £5.00. She meant the knobs and handles cost £5.00 but wouldn't listen to me trying to correct her so I thanked her and hung up.

Am waiting for an answer to an email now. Have asked them to send them. Do I stand a chance? (I think I already know the heart-sinking answer - another visit). Aaaaaaargh

(Don't expect any replies - just needed to rant)

I wouldn't expect much help from Ikea, but you might be lucky.

YANBU - Usually the box that you pick up has writing all over it saying 1 of 2 boxes or 1 of 3 ect. Despite this I've done the same thing but they did pick up on it at the till thankfully.

Gutted for you.

They sent something to us once when something was missing - no problem at all so you may be luckly....

bluefox · 27/04/2008 16:52

Oh ellingwoman I hope you dont have to return to Ikea. It is a Torture Chamber!

cupsoftea · 27/04/2008 17:01

yanbu - but just go back & get the bits. Ikea is just a big machine.

ThingOne · 27/04/2008 17:20

Go back one evening It's much quieter then. And breathe deeply as you queue up! But nine hours? What a nightmare.

There is a reason ikea is cheap, you know . They ain't joking when they say you do part of the work yourself and they don't just mean the building.

We've had issues with 2 part packages before. Seen on website what we want, taken down dimensions, measured car and decided it would fit if DH is happy to sit with seat as far forward as possible. Having got to Ikea (an hours drive away) we found it was 2 packages and the dimensions were for just the larger one. Couldn't fit second one in as well. Completely wasted journey.

Should you need to go back to the store, there is a customer service area. The Lakeside one is just to the left of the exit doors (loading bay). They have pots of essential screws/hinges/bolts for when you discover you are missing one component. It may be quicker to get the hinges there than trudging all thru the store

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know that at least ONE person has actually had something sent out, so I may get lucky.

I remember seeing that customer services area now. I hadn't thought it out properly but that's what I want as I have already paid for the things so don't want to go through the tills.
