Wrap around care for those who don't work??

Free breakfast clubs, afterschool clubs. Why would you need this if you are at home all day anyway? Another kick in the teeth to working parents. Obviously not including those in dire need of this care.

That's a different type of after school club

Ah yes, there was also a paid after school club which was just general arts and crafts, etc. we hardly ever used that one unless for some rare reason neither of us were able to collect at the usual time.

Imagine being annoyed that children will get before & after school care.

This

DinosaurMunch · 13/11/2024 16:55

It will be great for me. Single parent household income 25k. Not entitled to any benefits. Cost of breakfast club for 2 kids is £14 a day, after school club is £26. (Well - minus the 20% so whatever that works out at). I'm sure there are lots like me that don't get much if any state help but aren't well off.

The problem is if too many use it it will need lots of staff and space... Currently they do it in the nursery classroom with nursery staff and there's only about 10 or 15 kids from a school of 100.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/11/2024 16:56

I work full time and my kids don't use breakfast club or after school club - it's almost like peoples situations can be different. idk...

Shinyandnew1 · 13/11/2024 16:57

Another kick in the teeth to working parents.

Why exactly?

The problem is if too many use it it will need lots of staff and space

This is a huge problem. If every child (even half of them, to be honest) takes up a breakfast and after school place at our primary, we will simply not have the space to put them. We are also extremely concerned that the money offered will not be enough to pay members of support staff so nobody will want to do it. It can’t be another job for SLT or teachers to run it, so if it’s financially unviable, it just won’t happen.

It’ll end up like free dentistry and free nursery hours. You might be entitled to them on paper, but if you can’t find somewhere that offers it, it’s not happening.

SuspiciousAloysius · 13/11/2024 16:57

If you’re not working and don’t have a particular reason to need it, dropping kids to school earlier in the morning is not usually something you’d actually want to do, and having them in school an extra couple of hours is not necessarily something you would want to do either. I don’t work and wouldn’t use either even if they were free. I don’t think there would be as much demand for it as you might think anyway.

TheWoodpeckerSighed · 13/11/2024 16:58

Staffing these breakfast clubs is a huge issue. Who wants to work for a single hour at 8am? Not the TAs, before anyone suggests it - most put up with low wages because of the relatively family friendly hours so leaving the house that early doesn't suit a great many of them.

purpleme12 · 13/11/2024 16:58

I'm so confused
Where is this free wraparound care all these posts are talking about?!?

I know, how dare they🙄

lasagnelle · 13/11/2024 16:37

Why do you think it's wrong? A lot of kids getting free school meals have parents that work!

Exactly.

mitogoshigg · 13/11/2024 17:00

Breakfast clubs are about nutrition not care principally so why a kick in the teeth?

After school care may be due to chaotic home life

Crunchymum · 13/11/2024 17:00

None of that is free at my kids school. Breakfast club, after school club, holiday club and hobby clubs all have to be paid (there are concessions for parents on UC but it's still nowhere near free!)

MurdoMunro · 13/11/2024 17:02

Is this another one of these shit mothers who don’t work go to the left of the room, shit mothers who prioritise work over their children go to the right, now FIIIIIIGHT kinda threads? Will the OP come back? Who knows. It’s a mystery

cadburyegg · 13/11/2024 17:03

I don't resent children getting this at all.

Children are much more likely to disrupt a class if they are hungry. Warm, well fed children who arrive at school on time benefit their whole class. They are also more able to learn and get the most out of their education which benefits society.

Raisinsandweetabix · 13/11/2024 17:04

And here is the reason why. My (estranged) SIL. 6 kids. Very chaotic home life granted. Never ever worked a day in her life. Yet she has the time to do a weekly bonus ball syndicate online. Chasing people for money. Constantly shop for birthday/ Christmas presents. Drinks most weekends, holidays to benidorm. Slag's off the schools constantly on social media (happy to accept their childcare) and yet us MUGS are working our arses off, and have no free time.

OP posts:
TheJones · 13/11/2024 17:06

Are you saying OP - it should be free for working parents and those deemed as needed (for example looked after children/ disadvantaged kids etc) so it’s more selective ? Rather than a whole brush stroke approach and costing the taxpayer a lot of money paying for some who don’t need it? If so then yes that’s fair.

Startinganew32 · 13/11/2024 17:06

Well that shows the need for these clubs doesn’t it because every hour that her children are away from her is probably better than if they are with her.

Raisinsandweetabix · 13/11/2024 17:07

The same as the fact schools and nursery's are expected to 'teach kids to brush their teeth' I'm sorry but who is actually inept enough that they can't brush their kids fucking teeth twice a day/ supervise. Stop pretending it's 'all ok' no, we have become a nanny state to the huge detriment to our services. Poor teachers, poor nursery workers. Boohoo I'm too 'poor' to afford a toothbrush yet I can buy a vape

OP posts:
CatJumpingApple · 13/11/2024 17:08

Are available spaces the issue ?
Ah no

BabyPandaa · 13/11/2024 17:08

where is this? i’m a lone parent and i don’t work due to dds disability, she had an operation and i had to send my kids to after school club that day as i had no one to collect them and i wasn’t going to get back on time and i was charged for it so where is this happening? first time they ever went and was an emergency..

MurdoMunro · 13/11/2024 17:09

FFS OP. This is nothing to do whether wrap around care should be preserved for particular classes of patent. This is about you and your relationship with your SIL. Close this thread and start a new one and have the decency to be clear about what you are seeking comment about. Did you really think we’d all come on here and say ‘yeah, SAHMs are all useless free loading slags and don’t deserve to have their kids go to after school clubs’. I mean, bloody hell.

There are shitloads of really inept and outright awful parents. Read the news about certain court cases going on at the moment. That’s why there needs to be intervention to try to help the kids who didn’t ask to be born to these people. This is one form of that intervention.

OrNo · 13/11/2024 17:12

Wow. Where's the compassion for the children?

It is NEVER EVER the child's fault for the choices their parents make. If the choice is between the 6 children your SIL has sitting in front of screens for 90 minutes or learning football, crafting, coding, gymnastics, dance, multi sports etc at after school club which do you think is better for the children?

Remember, free breakfast is for the child. After school enrichment activities are for the child.

You can spit vitriol at parents choosing vapes over vegetables but it's the children who suffer.

PuppyTimes · 13/11/2024 17:13

If life on unemployment benefits is so easy why exactly are you working?

Strange you would have an issue with this when you say you have a 6 nieces and nephews who have a chaotic home life and low quality parenting from what you describe.
Why should there be no safety net for those kids to learn basic selfcare due to being unfortunate enough to be born to a bad mother?
You moan about a nanny state but a small government view would say that you as part of the family should provide part of the solution.
