Can you give some specific ways you think it’s better than where you live?

BMW6 · 13/11/2024 04:24

That's nice

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 13/11/2024 04:29

Have you been watching too many films?
It's not all that great!

timetodecide2345 · 13/11/2024 05:25

Did your neighbour vote Trump?

Don't tell me - you would like to move to Scotland? You imagine curling up reading Harry Potter by a big open fire on the banks of a loch with deer roaming outside?

In reality without a shed load of cash you may end up in a high rise flat in Preston.

Only joking. I just keep seeing endless threads on Instagram about Americans wanting to relocate to Scotland. Not England, just Scotland!

ArcticBells · 13/11/2024 06:03

The grass is certainly not greener

orchid81 · 13/11/2024 06:23

I'd love to move from here, but can't afford to. Miserable weather, long dark nights and super expensive!

It might not be green but it's greener than the US right now 😂

The grass is hay!

Crushed23 · 13/11/2024 06:37

MN isn't the place to find love for the UK.

I personally LOVE it here.

I am sadly emigrating very soon (due to stagnant wages / COL) but I will definitely miss it like crazy.

BlissBlakeney · 13/11/2024 06:41

YANBU It's fab - can't get over how lucky I am to have been born British and live here.

moggerhanger · 13/11/2024 06:43

I love Britain too. It's not perfect but where is?

Perfectlystill · 13/11/2024 06:45

I love Britain too and feel very lucky to have been born here.

People risk their lives trying to get here. I always wonder at the droves who diss it - where would they rather live? Yes there is LOTS wrong with it, not least the current government, but it is such a tolerant, friendly place to be.

I have lived abroad so I have perspective.

pilates · 13/11/2024 06:51

Yes I feel lucky to live here.

Op, have you always wanted to live in UK or just since Trump got elected?

Where are you, mid south USA?

magicscares · 13/11/2024 06:52

Yes I agree. Lots to enjoy.

I think one of the issues we do have here is people complaining! Nice to read a positive thread about the uk for once.

pilates · 13/11/2024 06:52

Just seen your username

pilates · 13/11/2024 06:53

Yes @magicscares us Brits do like to have a moan

Cerialkiller · 13/11/2024 07:00

I was just thinking about this. After Brexit we had a mad moment were we considered moving away. Now though I'm thinking where the hell would we even go?

We have plenty of problems here. Lot of work to be done and things are harder then a few years ago, but all the countries that I would have considered before have gone a bit mad.

Laws that throw women in the shit and the gleeful sterilisation of children on the alter of gender is a big issue. I feel quite proud of Britain that we have lead the fight on that front.

Newnamehiwhodis · 13/11/2024 07:02

I love it too. Spent a lot of time there - but it was long ago, and really, is there anything at all to beat London in the ‘90’s … ahhhh it was so lovely.
I found people in general more polite. I felt more at home there. The US .. there are some wonderful things about it, but people can be so crass and insensitive.

I found things a bit more rough when I lived in N. Wales - actually got sick because there just wasn’t much fresh and healthy food available where I was at the time!

so I suppose it would all depend on where you go, and what you’re looking for.

i loved the small towns a lot more than London; but to each her own- whether you prefer big cities or quiet small towns, there’s something for everyone.

the beauty, for me, in London was its history. We just don’t have anything here that is steeped in so rich a culture and history everywhere one turns - it was a lovely time living there. But the place I lived, Camden town, has burned down and is gone, I think. :(

This.

TheDogsMother · 13/11/2024 07:57

I will regularly have a good moan about the weather, politicians, COL but I've noticed when we've visited Spain, France, Netherlands you look at the headlines and people in those countries are complaining about the exact same things. I guess the grass isn't always greener.

SR71Blackbird · 13/11/2024 07:59

Hard agree OP. People are literally (as in, the traditional use of literally) dying to get to the UK.

Preston has some problems, but has fabulous parks, a beautiful river running through it, mainly very friendly locals, a successful university, several shopping centres, 2 cinemas, and a third one being built, easy access to the road and rail network, from which you can get to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Manchester, Liverpool, the west coast and the Peak District all in less than an hour. One of the countries largest manufacturers,BAE, has two large sites and the new GCHQ cyber crime centre is planned for in next few years. If you live in a high rise, you will have views to die for. The cost of living in the area is relatively low, you can still get a good beer for around £4 in some pubs. All the supermarkets have several branches in the city. A very diverse mix of locals, meaning you can buy food from all over the world. There are many more worse places to live in the UK.

Dancingontheedge · 13/11/2024 08:10

I’m English and I love living in the bit of England I’ve finally settled in after moving around for decades. But then, I’ve got the sea and the countryside and London an hour away. I’ve got a garden and all the history I want to wallow in.
My family is safe, and we have safety nets if things change, even if they are a bit threadbare.
And the freedom to live my life as a woman how I want to, and the NHS and free education to 18. No, our country isn’t perfect, but we know that and many of us are working to improve things, as have millions in the past. We’re always a work in progress.
And it’s a hell of a lot better than so many other countries.

All this and, as others have mentioned, people are literally dying to get here. Nothing would persuade me live in, or even visit, the USA with Trump in charge.

mitogoshigg · 13/11/2024 08:21

I have 2 friends currently moving here from USA, they can due to grandparents being British. They have had enough

mitogoshigg · 13/11/2024 08:23

We Brits have to remember the good things that get pushed aside, plus that nearly all the negatives happen elsewhere too (rising costs, cutting back on services, healthcare waits - we have various friends across Europe and nobody likes their government!)
