I like living in the UK, not very popular to admit. And I don't live in one of the nice areas.

It would be nice if rent was more affordable but I think that's an issue everywhere, not just UK.

Indianajet · 13/11/2024 08:38

I live in North Wales and love it. The sea and the mountains are within easy reach, the cities of Chester and Liverpool are a short train journey away and even London is only a couple of hours by train.

ZenNudist · 13/11/2024 08:39

Most people do not appreciate how lucky we are to have been born in and live in the UK. I have colleagues from all over the world and they have moved a very long way and given up a lot to live here. If I ever whine too much about the uk there remind me what the situation is like in places they came from India Africa Asia, global South generally ex colonial places.

I recently went to California and LOVE it there but the beautiful scenery and fab weather in November is balanced by the need to have expensive health insurance, 20% tipping, the traffic is a nightmare, its way too hot in the summer, they had a wildfire warning in san diego in November (!) and guns generally but in school in particular. I still like American energy. Better than UK misery!

sausagesforteaagain · 13/11/2024 08:40

teah we have good opportunities, a diverse population, a good climate and thankfully a labour gov for 5 years.

not perfect but no bribery here, not much corruption

Musk obv bought twitter so he could turn it into a right wing propaganda factory to enable Trump’s win, and his access to US government

UK has a decorated Human rights lawyer as our PM. Think we are doing better.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 13/11/2024 08:46

I don't know, you'll get a lot of negativity here because it's currenetly fashionable to be extremely negative about the UK, whether you're from here or not.

But, I went for a great walk over the weekend along a beautiful coastal path. It made me glad that in this country we have such a huge network of public footpaths to choose from. I didn't realise until recently that plenty of other countries don't have this. So it's just one thing, but it's something about here that I'm grateful for.

There I go being positive about one aspect of my country. How very unBritish!

There are lots of things that are great about living here. Of course we have a culture of incessant moaning but if you can push through that noise you can carve out a lovely life.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/11/2024 08:57

I too feel lucky every day to be born and life In Britain. I mean I wish it were sunnier but in general i love where I live.

NeedToChangeName · 13/11/2024 09:02

I have friends who live in Edinburgh. They love it there

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 13/11/2024 09:05

I love it too. Spent a lot of time there - but it was long ago, and really, is there anything at all to beat London in the ‘90’s … ahhhh it was so lovely.
I found people in general more polite. I felt more at home there. The US .. there are some wonderful things about it, but people can be so crass and insensitive.

I found things a bit more rough when I lived in N. Wales - actually got sick because there just wasn’t much fresh and healthy food available where I was at the time!

so I suppose it would all depend on where you go, and what you’re looking for.

i loved the small towns a lot more than London; but to each her own- whether you prefer big cities or quiet small towns, there’s something for everyone.

the beauty, for me, in London was its history. We just don’t have anything here that is steeped in so rich a culture and history everywhere one turns - it was a lovely time living there. But the place I lived, Camden town, has burned down and is gone, I think. :(

I so wish I had lived in London in the 90s (even though I was a baby / in primary school). It seems like it was the absolute best of times.

I feel so so so lucky to have lived in London the past 12 years though. What a city. 💜

Agreed! There's that old Aussie joke:

How do you know when a plane load of Poms has landed.....?"

"The engine stops but the whining noise goes on"

And we're very good at laughing at ourselves! Love the British sense of humour

YANBU It's fab - can't get over how lucky I am to have been born British and live here.

Must admit I feel the same. I love it

GatherlyGal · 13/11/2024 09:10

I love living in the UK. I was born here and have lived abroad. Living abroad made me realise just how much we take for granted here.

You can turn up at a hospital and be treated and not worry about whether it will bankrupt you. Your kids can get an education which may vary by area but generally will be pretty good. We can get a great variety of food to eat and also a reasonable selection of cheap but healthy food. We can turn up at the petrol station and expect petrol to be available, turn lights and taps on and expect things to work.

I know things are expensive but prices have gone up everywhere and here for most people there are opportunities for education, training, jobs etc

The 90s and early 00s in the UK were a great time to be in your 20s.

Oh yes, the British sense of humour is unrivalled.

Love it.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 13/11/2024 09:14

DH and I moved back from the US to the UK after 30 years in the US.

The cost of living is actually lower here compared to where we lived in Alabama, house prices and food prices have gone crazy where we used to live, add in healthcare costs and the UK is looking good despite the taxes. And before anyone moans, we paid into our UK old age pension all the time we were in the US and we took out health insurance any time we visited the UK so we weren't a burden on the NHS.

I like it where we live now as despite it being a town 'packed with drunken idiots' and no amenities (according to its write up on line). It is a community with village halls that are full of different groups that I can join, people will start conversations with strangers in shops or walking along the street or in a bus queue. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities. It isn't the prettiest town I've lived in but it's the first place I've lived in in 30 years where I felt I was actually a part of the place I was living in. I have come across quite a few Americans living here too so it must have something going for it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 13/11/2024 09:15

Yes, we are lucky. Living in the UK really isn’t as bad as most would have us believe. Sick to death of all of the posters hating on it, I sincerely wish they would go and live in the promised land that they claim everywhere else in the world to be!

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 13/11/2024 09:16

The UK is a fantastic place to live and I say that having lived in lots of countries. I never forget how lucky I am to live here.

North Wales is stunning. One of my favourite places in the UK.

I feel very fortunate to have been born in the UK. I think from here you can go anywhere, do anything really. I think life is as much about luck and the opportunity that brings as anything else.

This is how I view being from the UK - it's a great start in life and sets you up for anything you want to do.

I am leaving the UK, as I say upthread, but funnily enough it is my upbringing that I believe has given me the foundations and security to consider moving abroad alone and stepping out of my comfort zone in this way.

Soukmyfalafel · 13/11/2024 09:27

The UK is great for most people if you are over 55 and was able to buy when housing was cheaper and there was much higher council house stock (and those who say it wasn't are lying, housing was 3/4x average salary, versus 10x in some places now). It is pretty shit if you have a family and are under 50. Very expensive, shit weather, failing education system.

It is the missed opportunities through being run by utter donkeys for decades that makes it hard to live here. Yes we aren't a war zone or hit by hurricanes every autumn, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to be better. It is shutting down progress not being able to say something is not working and needs to be better, because we should be grateful there aren't bombs raining down from the sky. I think the stiff upper lip approach hasn't helped our country.

Our poverty rates should speak for themselves.

That said, I'd rather live here than the USA because worker rights are atrocious and I can't get over people on the same street as me being able to own guns.

Nothatgingerpirate · 13/11/2024 09:34

Really?
Where are you from?
I was born in Communist Czechoslovakia ages ago and life was better then (for myself).
😁

Davros · 13/11/2024 09:35

@Newnamehiwhodis Camden Town is still here 👋. You can't polish a turd and I would classify Canden as turd-like but it's got lots going for it too. I'm up the hill in NW3 and it's gorgeous here - fun, lively, friendly, green, home.
I really love living here 🥁
