Meetup photo disgust

Doglover321 · 11/11/2024 19:50

I’m the Organizer of a popular Meetup group and we recently had our large 1 Year Anniversary event in a local pub. Ahead of the event, I decided to post that we will have a group photo at 8pm for anyone who wants to, and then went around and reminded members just before 8pm that we’re about to take our group photo and they can be in it if they want. There were about 50 of us in attendance, but I specifically remember speaking to two new members and asking them if they want to be in the group photo, to which they responded that they absolutely did. They are pictured in the photo smiling and posing!

HOWEVER, one of these new members has two months later changed her mind and been ordering that the photo is deleted and taken down from all platforms - including Meetup itself, that she didn’t consent, etc.

Where do I stand on this, please?! Don’t tell me I’m going to get them to fill in photo consent forms going forward?!?!

Blur her or put a ridiculous sticker over her face.

Even if she had given written permission something in her life may have happened to change what she wants to share.

It’s only two months later that she’s suddenly changed her mind. She even mentioned she told her marketing department at work and a pub is a private place and I will have needed her consent - but as far as I am aware I did obtain her consent?!

Whatever her reasons she can withdraw consent so you are just going to have to do something about it.

afrikat · 11/11/2024 22:03

I would offer to blur her face on any pictures you have access to, eg those on your SM or the Meetup space, but point out lots of others have shared the pic so she will need to contact them all individually to arrange the same. I would also make sure she isn't in any photos moving forwards to avoid this happening again

@TheCatterall

Why the need for the tedious misogyny with the ‘Karen’ slur?

Ablondiebutagoody · 11/11/2024 22:09

She's not worth the hassle. Tell her to piss off and remove her from the group

What, so some could say 'hey those photos from 10 years ago at your 21st, I revoke my permission.. DELETE THEM ALL!!!!'

surreygirl1987 · 11/11/2024 22:10

GreyCarpet · 11/11/2024 19:59

Consent can be withdrawn and people can still ask to have their photos removed from all platforms at any time.

This. She has every right. But blurring her out of it is a good idea.

If being used on a website etc, then yes of course.

Are people STILL using that misogynistic slur?!

This doesn’t apply to photos taken in public. I doubt she has any rights.

Florencelatsy · 11/11/2024 22:12

I go to a club with my child that takes photos and they clearly say "Parents do not allow your child to have their photo taken if they are not allowed on social media." Surely that can be said for adults? As long as you clearly verbally state "This photo will be uploaded to social media, please do not participate if you do not agree to this" they have no leg to stand on?! If they were that worried they shouldn't have got in the photo in the first place! 🤦🏼‍♀️
You could even put that on the site they are being uploaded to "All photos were verbally consented to at time of posting." For future reference?

Aibuforthisthought · 11/11/2024 22:14

TH1NG1E · 11/11/2024 19:51

Can you just blur her out of the photo?

Stick a smiley over her face with a frown on it

GreyRockinRock · 11/11/2024 22:15

You can blank her out of the photo you have control over. The rest is up to her.
If she wants a group photo that won't be shared she will have to take on her own camera with everyone's consent 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Moonlightstars

There are hundreds of reasons not want your photo on the internet. Facial recognition is very scary. It's amazing how much you can get picked up out of photos.

I'm always slightly worried my shit head of an ex-boyfriend from 30 years ago will find me. He managed to get my phone number once about 20 years ago and rang me up repeatedly. He was never very violent just aggressive and a horrible drunk. If he trapped me down to where I live it would be very easy to find me .

If you are so worried about being tracked down, then don't let anyone take photos of you then. The vast VAST majority of people will put photos from social events online. It's 2024 - it's very naïve to not expect people to post photos online.

If people are that worried, then they should not let anyone take photos of them. To pose with a big group, and then start kicking off and demanding the photo is taken down (when someone posts the photo online) is really entitled and selfish behaviour. And it's not fair on everyone else. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. If it was me, no WAY would I take it down.

Life changes. Just delete it and get a new one.

Shakespeareandi · 11/11/2024 22:18

Not a huge issue? Blur her face or put an emoji on. There coukd be many reasons why she has changed her mind. She may not feel comfortable telling you why or she has simply changed her mind. It will take a couple of minutes to blur her face and put the new image up. Would have been quicker tham writing this post about it. Be kind, you don't know what people are going trough and it really isn't a big deal.

Hopelessinhomecounties · 11/11/2024 22:19

There could be a backstory so although the immediate thinking is she’s being unreasonable some people have very good reasons for no photo.

Or the OP could just block the woman complaining and leave the photo up.

Is she on the run? Seems quite paranoid.

She just may not like how she looks on camera. I’m absolutely repulsive on photographs.

Aurorora · 11/11/2024 22:25

Just replace her head with an aliens head or something apt

So as I posted up thread, what happens if something has been reposted or printed ie. you are no longer in control of circulation? You can stop using it but its still out there?

What if they disclosed that they were leaving their violent partner or had been raped that weekend didn't want to be found or just discovered that they brother was getting done for murder and his family were out for revenge. Or maybe they are worried they're going to be turned into some A1 porn thing that some weirdo in the village has created off photos of the pub.
Just because you want some photo on social media you wouldn't take it down?
My kids have all asked me to take their pictures down off Facebook so I have, the world didn't end.
No particular reason for them but they just didn't want to be on social media anymore.

Personally I wouldn't take the whole photo down I would blur her face.
