Get a bell collar or something. Give the wildlife a chance. Can you train cats to leave birds alone?

I asked mine, he said 'nah'.

I asked mine & he said 'have you found that mouse that I exchanged for Dreamies this morning? It ran under the setee.

letthemalldoone · 10/11/2024 18:18

I don't think cats speak highly of you either!

Cats need to be kept inside. They are an invasive species.

So are cockroaches but I don’t see you opening up your home to them either.

My cats dont hurt wild life as their indoor cat and have an enclosed Catio.

Anyone who gives a single fuck about wildlife doesn't have a free ranging predator they call fluffy. But this isn't news.

Do you have a hedgehog in your garden that you've built a house for? Do you have insect hotels? Do you have birdfeeders which are kept topped up all year? I do, I also don't eat meat. I have cats, they're not called fluffy. They are not allowed out early in the morning and we get them in early at night.

NewGreenDuck · 10/11/2024 18:22

I've just spoken to mine and she has confirmed that she is far too lazy to chase small animals or birds. She prefers it if I just open up a sachet of cat food and she ambles to the cat bowl. Then back to sleep.

TWETMIRF · 10/11/2024 18:23

I gave up with collars after getting fed up having to constantly buy new when he came home without one. He likes going outside and will keep asking and asking until he gets his way. If meowing doesn't work he moves on to biting and scratching. He'll attack us, the children, furniture and gets more and more upset until the door is opened for him.

Some cats are ok with being indoor cats but most won't be as it's not in their nature. He has plenty of different toys but rarely wants anything to do with them so I've given up buying them too. If I was to never let him out, we'd have to keep all doors and windows closed constantly to stop him. When he was a kitten we used to shut him in a room if we wanted to open a window or door. He'd go nuts if we did that to him now, we did try keeping him in at night but he soon cottoned on and wouldn't come home in the evening as he knew we wouldn't let him out again. Unless it's horrible weather, he wants to be out at night.

You can't change the nature of animals, they are what they are. I would never get a cat that wasn't a rescue, many cat owners are the same so having them as pets is not why the population is so large. Rescues make sure that cats are neutered before they get homed to cut down on all the strays and cats with homes will hunt less than ones without as they are only doing it for fun rather than necessity.

Daisyb1080 · 10/11/2024 18:25

Mine stalks and catches socks and small toys, I don’t think she is much of a threat 🤷‍♀️

Consider a carnivorous pet’s impact on the climate emergency too.

Cat - 310kg of CO2e per year
UK Human - 5 tonnes
USA human - 16 tonnes

I'd suggest not having babies.

Cats don’t actually upset the bird population, if anything they help to strengthen it. They only catch the weak/sick birds that wouldn’t survive anyway. YABU.

A proposition with no evidence. The ones who enter my garden mainly kill healthy fledglings. And I am not sure how one would recognise a weak or sick slowworm.

Herewegoago · 10/11/2024 18:27

oakleaffy · 10/11/2024 17:16

Cats can and do catch fledgelings out of nests.
They catch native Wildlife in Australia and reach enormous sizes-
It's not at all ''just the old and the sick''. That's complete nonsense.

Cats are efficient predators.

Apologies, I should have specified that I am in in the UK, where this information comes from the bird protection outfits thenselves.

Sunnysundayicecream · 10/11/2024 18:30

The main reason for the decline in wild birds is intensive farming accourding to the RSPB. The use of fertilisers, pesticides etc as well as a reduction in hedgerows is a major cause of of the depletion of wild birds. This is a man made problem, nothing to do with cats.

Did you measure the size of the spleen compared to other birds and also the protein mass of the bird your cat caught? I dont think we are talking about noticeable differences at the time of catching. It is true it is mainly sick birds they catch, RSPB themselves have stated this.

There is evidence provided by the RSPB themselves. I've already quoted it in this thread

Wantitalltogoaway · 10/11/2024 17:53

My vet told me that cats with bell collars actually kill more wildlife than cats without. Fun fact.

That's because they probably have collars put on when they keep killing everything

Also people replacing their gardens will fully paved yards or plastic grass won’t help and also the councils allowing building everywhere in urban and suburban areas won’t help

Why does an American human make so much more?

Why is it ridiculous. All the people feeding vast numbers of birds from bird feeders in their garden are just contributing to healthy bird populations who then decimate the worms. Its only as ridiculous as asking those who feed cats to ask them to stop eating worms

Worms are wild animals cats aren't. Control them

We have a multi generational feral cat population here (most are neutered then rereleased here) and they are definitely wild.

OK but then also dogs will never be off their lead and will be muzzled outside if they have poor recall. Oh what was that? They need to run? They can just run on a lead.

stormsandsunshine · 10/11/2024 18:39

lasagnelle · 10/11/2024 18:35

Why does an American human make so much more?

Because they are likely to do more driving and own more cars, and potentially do more flying as it is such a huge country. Also consume more red meat, especially beef which is the worst meat for its carbon footprint.
