To do something naughty in Charity Shops

When I have donations to small things eg unopened and unwanted makeup items or a wrong size sink plug say, I slip them into the appropriate baskets or boxes in the shop so the volunteers don't have to sort it.

It said unwanted, not unopened

It says unopened.

Yeah it does seem a bit… unusual Grin but it was the only way I could make sense of what OP wrote. And I've seen some odd baskets of assorted widgets in some of my local ones.

Wow.i feel like I've really sinned 👀🙏
I see the sense in it. From previous voluntary work in a charity shop warehouse sorting out donations.
As for people leaving donations outside a shop, I'd say that's daft. Particularly when it's raining.

Well that’s just stupid and unhelpful. Stop it.

It would be better to donate them properly and gift aid them.

I do that with larger donations. And yes I'm a gift aider.

Bizarre and very unhelpful behaviour. You need to stop it.

mathanxiety · 12/11/2024 03:52

Why?

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 12/11/2024 04:47

Don't you have a rubbish bin?

Of all the responses to your post, this one is the one that made you feel scolded? The one from someone who tried to come up with a plausible explanation as to why it might've seemed to you like a sensible thing to do, and why the lack of individual labelling wouldn't necessarily cause problems in itself?

Toptops · 12/11/2024 07:13

Weird.

If you’ve previously worked in a charity shop, why would you do this?

mamajong · 12/11/2024 08:00

Naughty? More like daft.

I'm now chuckling as I imagine Theresa May discreetly putting little bits and pieces of unused make-up and other junk into charity shops.

I imagine that Boris has had quite a lot of old baby stuff over the years to pop down and donate!

Jimmy Savile wrote books? (Misses point of thread entirely)

I don't know if he wrote books, but an older lady gave me a box of old books once which had a girls annual from the 70s. This contained a lengthy interview with Saville who when asked why he has not yet married, responded that "girls are like wild flowers who wither the moment they are plucked."

Surely, as a previous charity shop worker, you realise the combined effort and cumulative effect of all of the little things that are sold?

One item sold for just 50p isn’t going to do anything; but 500 items each sold at just 50p over a period of time will make a difference.

Why on earth wouldn't an extra 25% on top of that £250 - if all of the givers were taxpayers - be worth it for the charity to receive as well?

Annabella92 · 12/11/2024 08:10

You say yourself it's naughty in the header - so why are you doing it?

SimpleThings101 · 12/11/2024 08:13

Do charity shops just attract weirdos?

getahhtmapub · 10/11/2024 01:29

Charity shops DO NOT sell opened make up! It harbours bacteria and has a short shelf life.

So you are really making it bloody hard for them.

Post does say un-opened to be fair but regardless it seems a very strange thing to do - just donate as normal.

Unfortunately it seems a lot of them do!

FeetLikeFlippers · 12/11/2024 16:35

Sounds like something from Viz “Top Tips”.

A godless rapist giving advice about God to kids? Confused euwwww!

One’s just become President of the US on a platform of supposed godliness so nothing has changed

It might cause confusion, and the item wouldn't be priced but at least it would get sold to the public as opposed to the volunteers getting first dibs on it.

first dibs. On a fecking plug.

Needmorelego · 12/11/2024 17:45

@campertess staff/volunteers aren't usually allowed "first dibs" though even if they were the money would still go to the charity 🤔

Maybe everything has been tightened up, but my mil volunteered for a charity shop and the manager would put things aside for herself, and she wasn't always convinced that the items were paid for.

We are in our shop, but there are rules around not pricing anything you want to buy. A small perk for going through bags of other people’s grotty underwear.
