To do something naughty in Charity Shops

Monty27 · 10/11/2024 00:12

When I have donations to small things eg unopened and unwanted makeup items or a wrong size sink plug say, I slip them into the appropriate baskets or boxes in the shop so the volunteers don't have to sort it.

OP posts:

Misleading title. Should read ‘To Do Something Stupid in Charity Shops’.

thebigL · 10/11/2024 08:59

It's a bit odd to be so very pleased with yourself about this...it's not actually helpful to anyone.

Avatartar · 10/11/2024 09:24

Surely wandering about doing that costs you more time and you may be mistaken for a shop lifter fiddling about moving things between pockets/bags and products for sale

Meltedchocolateteapot · 10/11/2024 09:25

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 10/11/2024 08:34

I guess you’ll know better now. It will be a member of the public trying to be helpful instead.

It’s the exact opposite of helpful. No logical person would think they’re helping by sneaking unpriced and unchecked products onto a shop floor. In this scenario the vast majority of people would think the volunteers messed up, and they would get landed with the blame. It would never occur to most that a member of the public would do something like sneak their unwanted stuff onto a charity shop floor.

NonPlayerCharacter · 10/11/2024 09:25

No, please don't do this. It's well intentioned but it makes things harder.

Best thing you can do is donate the usual way and make really sure that everything you give really is clean, intact and in a sellable condition.

That's not helpful.
They have to sort it and check everything they sell.
Please stop.

CandyCane457 · 10/11/2024 09:29

This is all a bit weird. You’re saying it’s “naughty” but then give off a vibe of “look at me, I’m so helpful for saving the workers/volunteers a job, praise me everyone.”

But yeah, like most other people have said, stupid idea.

Lovelysummerdays · 10/11/2024 09:36

Like Pps I don’t think this is a good idea. Perhaps look up if you have a community sharing shed. In ours you can leave out bits and bobs. They are always keen for volunteers to tidy and sort as they go, not a regular commitment like volunteering in a charity shop just 5 minutes when you pass.

Daschund · 10/11/2024 09:39

I bet you run through fields of wheat, particularly just before it's harvested.

Why would you think self indulgent twattery is a symptom of a mental health problem ?

TerryKirby · 10/11/2024 09:41

Well if ever there was a thread that did NOT live up to its title, it's this one.

I thought at the very least it'd be some cheeky rearrangement of the items in the window, or the book titles to spell out a rude word

Disappointing OP

thegirlwithemousyhair · 10/11/2024 09:41

Bloody idiocy. Get a life.

Cherrysoup · 10/11/2024 09:42

Stupid and your behaviour will look suspicious. Just donate normally.

Lairymary · 10/11/2024 09:44

NuffSaidSam · 10/11/2024 01:31

It's says unopened in the OP, so probably didn't need to shout that one at the OP.

"and unwanted"
unopened makeup and unwanted makeup
Or
Unwanted, unopened makeup.
Who knows, it wasn't 100% clear, unless OP clarifies.

MrsSunshine2b · 10/11/2024 09:44

If you want to help, why not just volunteer a couple of hours of your time once a week or so? That would be a lot more useful than effectively gaslighting the volunteers by having items suddenly appear in various places around the shop!

ladyamy · 10/11/2024 09:45

NuffSaidSam · 10/11/2024 01:31

It said unwanted, not unopened

Vax · 10/11/2024 09:46

You're causing them more work and issues. Just donate properly if you want to.

Wwe175 · 10/11/2024 09:48

Sink plug - if unused, take to the Council recycling centre, draw it to their attention, and they will take it for their shop.
Makeup - take it to the makeup recycling box in Tesco.

Job done.

BournardTourney · 10/11/2024 09:49

Once discovered a volunteer will likely get the blame for either not following the process correctly or putting it there themselves- and when they protest their innocence the managers/ supervisors will say “well somebody’s put it there!” and likely sanction everyone until they find out who - and since you have done it more than once that will make it look worse

NukaCola · 10/11/2024 09:53

Charity shop volunteer posts on MN: my manager had a right go at me earlier because she found random objects in the shop and I swear blind that I haven't put them there, she says she didn't either!

MN posters: could she have dementia? 🙄

MothralovesGojira · 10/11/2024 09:59

It sounds like you think that you're giving a secret Santa gift or something @Monty27 and you couldn't be more wrong or misguided. This may give you pleasure but it's a pain in the butt for those of us who work or volunteer in charity shops.
This method (as nice as your intention seemingly is) is utterly pointless. Any items that have no price ticket have to go back out the sort room to be checked and ticketed so you're not saving any of our time or effort. I know that this may sound bizarre but we do not make up prices on the spot and each item has a code for stock control etc which shop floor volunteers don't always know so it just causes confusion to them plus it slows till process time down.
We have to be very careful about intimate items like make up and body products and have to be sure about the source - something that just appears will generally be binned if the hygiene seals are broken or missing. Random household items (like a plug) that suddenly appear are worse because we have to check all the other items on the shelves to see if random item has fallen out or come loose and then we bin it if we can't find where it's come from if it ha no packaging.
Also unticketed items are more likely to be shoplifted too and we can not prove that the item is ours to sell because it has no ticket and none of will recognise the item as we haven't checked/sorted it. Believe me, shoplifting in charity shops is rife and we lose huge amounts of stock to thievery every week.

If you pay tax why are you not gift aiding any donations? Why do you donate in this fashion rather than openly. I would be very interested to hear why you donate this way please.

MothralovesGojira · 10/11/2024 10:03

@BournardTourney
Our shop doesn't blame volunteers for errors but I know some others that do treat volunteers this way. Paid staff are ultimately responsible for what happens in the shop and that's why we get paid the big bucks - or NMW 😆

Attelina · 10/11/2024 10:07

Is this some kind of weird fetish?

Your behaviour is weird not naughty.

You could hand over a carrier bag of the small items and say that it's all new and unopened cosmetics rather than tiptoeing around the shop like bloody Hamburglar hiding items amongst the things for sale.

Maybe get out more in the fresh air.

Livingtothefull · 10/11/2024 10:28

'Naughty' adults are just a pain in the arse. Congratulations on making things hard for the volunteers who give up their time to support these shops.

Fartooold · 10/11/2024 10:31

Wonder if you live near me?
I felt as though I was being accused of shoplifting in my charity shop when I bought a leather backpack. It looked new, still had the sellotape type stuff around the straps, and packaging inside.
When the volunteer checked the pockets, she pulled out a scarf and asked if it was mine.
Then she found a keyring, spoon (!), and birthday card. Each and every time asking if the item was mine.
My face was burning by the time I came out.

Please don't fart around.
