To do something naughty in Charity Shops

Monty27 · 10/11/2024 00:12

When I have donations to small things eg unopened and unwanted makeup items or a wrong size sink plug say, I slip them into the appropriate baskets or boxes in the shop so the volunteers don't have to sort it.

OP posts:
cantthinkofausername26 · 10/11/2024 07:11

Just why?? What a bizarre thing to do. They need to be checked and priced before they go out on the shelves. You're probably causing a lot more agro for the poor volunteers

MissSookieStackhouse · 10/11/2024 07:18

Why would you do that? Sounds a bit daft. Why not just say I’ve got some donations and potentially gift aid them? You said ‘naughty’ - I’d say stupid and unhelpful.

MagentaRavioli · 10/11/2024 07:26

Oh. Are you one of those people who don’t need to follow rules?

Wishingplenty · 10/11/2024 07:31

It is hardly the crime of the century. Everyone on here is vastly exaggerating. I thought you were going to say you label swapped or something.

FitAt50 · 10/11/2024 07:42

A wrong size sink plug!!!!!! Do you regularly have these?

pinkstripeycat · 10/11/2024 07:45

getahhtmapub · 10/11/2024 01:29

Charity shops DO NOT sell opened make up! It harbours bacteria and has a short shelf life.

So you are really making it bloody hard for them.

OP did say UNopened you funny fella 😂

peachie82 · 10/11/2024 07:55

Are you ok? That’s a strange thing to do.

PortiasBiscuit · 10/11/2024 07:57

My DD spent the summer sorting charity shop donations, they are incredibly fussy and so they should be. This sort of behaviour is not helpful. If your stuff is sellable they will sell it and make money on it, if it isn’t then you are potentially causing a health and safety issue. I know you mean well OP, but you should stop it.

mitogoshigg · 10/11/2024 07:57

If the make up seal is broken it cannot be sold, the shop will be reprimanded by trading standards if spotted. As for the plug, if unused just donate in the normal way

ReadWithScepticism · 10/11/2024 07:58

OP, that is flytipping rather than donating. Stop it.

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/11/2024 08:02

This is the silliest thing I’ve read in ages. I think you were trying to do something nice but it’s been plainly explained how it’s unhelpful. Just hand over the counter next time.

Meltedchocolateteapot · 10/11/2024 08:03

You could potentially get one of the volunteers in trouble doing this. If I was managing a charity shop and regularly saw that items were put out on the floor without being checked or priced I would naturally assume that one of the volunteers had dropped the ball rather than a random member of the public sneaking their junk out onto the shop floor!

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/11/2024 08:07

It's a completely mad thing to do. Very, very unreasonable.

CalicoPusscat · 10/11/2024 01:39

Sometimes I feel that I want to give something away for free but am aware charity shops pay rent, electric etc.

So I do wish there was a separate section where you could just ask them to give things away for free aside from the main shop.

But no don't go dropping things off randomly!!

Try Freecycle or Facebook marketplace if you've got stuff you want to give away for free!

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 10/11/2024 08:14

You're so cool and hardcore!

Newusernameforthiss · 10/11/2024 08:14

Super unhelpful. Put it on Vinted or something. Why would you think this was ok???

This is a very good point.

I guess you’ll know better now. It will be a member of the public trying to be helpful instead.

5128gap · 10/11/2024 08:35

Everyone's an expert in the charity sector aren't they? Always someone with a better idea of how things could be done. If you feel you have come up with an innovative way of saving time in charity shops OP, apply to join the trustee board and share your ideas through the proper channel. Otherwise, maybe afford workers the respect of abiding by their policies and procedures?

There is an app called Olio for this.

Blahblahblah2 · 10/11/2024 08:49

Such a weird thing to do.

NukaCola · 10/11/2024 08:49

Well it makes a difference from leaving bags at the door when we're closed, or scuttling into the shop, dumping something at the stock room door and scuttling out again while the volunteer is on the till and doesn't have time to talk.

We do have "everything 50p and everything £1" baskets by the till and that's exactly where we'd put unused/unopened small make up items. A sink plug though? Many modern bathrooms don't have that sort of plug, we don't have any in the house. If we had one donated we'd bin it as it just wouldn't sell.

You might think you are doing us a favour OP but you're really not.

Read the OP again. She said unopened make up.

Littleannoyingperson · 10/11/2024 08:52

Why op? Just that, why would you make their lives more difficult?

FeistyFrankie · 10/11/2024 08:53

Weird
