To believe that people should stop expecting special treatment for “food preferences” (not allergies) at events?

If it’s just a preference, it’s on you to manage. AIBU to think events shouldn’t have to cater to everyone’s diet choices?

Because if a vegan is hosting an event with only vegan food, they're imposing their restrictions on you.

So what? It's their event. They choose what food to offer. Be grateful somebody's feeding you. If you don't like it, don't eat it.

So if a meat eater who doesn't eat lamb serves you beef, are they imposing their dietary restrictions on you?

ExpressCheckout · 10/11/2024 17:13

My medical problem means that I can't eat unpasteurised cheese, which is a shame as I'm a cheese monster.

On the plus side, it means I can politely decline middle class dinner parties, thank goodness.

Do you go round your Jewish mate's and demand a roll on bacon?

I’ve shared a few examples in the thread - feel free to take a look.

No you haven't. What food preferences are you talking about?

Vegan food is vegetables, beans and pulses.

But an awful lot of vegan food these days isn't those things. It's processed stuff that I'd rather not eat in place of proper food. I get my processed stuff from the Square Crisps I'm currently eating;

I've ended up going back to meat options more often these days because I don't want the vegan option, whereas previously I often got the veggie.

Ellmau · 10/11/2024 17:49

But if somebody's invited you for a meal you expect to be able to eat something.

As a veggie, I agree with you. Nobody seems to do a bean burger anymore for example. It's all fake meat burgers.

Unfortunately I can't go opt for the meat.

Of course. But the person I was responding to seemed to feel that it was some sort of personal affront that a vegan would not be serving anything of animal origin, and that a vegetarian would not be serving meat or fish, and so on and so forth.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 10/11/2024 18:09

The only meat in my house is there for the cat.

Need to visit the frozen section. Got a box of Sainsburys Plant Pioneers spicy bean burgers in my freezer. Paid £1.60-1.75 for 4

I'm talking about restaurants no longer doing them.

I'd usually make my own at home but there are a few decent supermarket ones too.

Glasgowgal200 · 11/11/2024 17:56

I'll admit I'm a fussy eater so if I'm eating out will try and order something I know I'll like and try not to be too awkward - tho did once have to say to waiter to ask chef not to put mushrooms in my pasta dish as I can't stand them and that was only dish on menu that I liked

OldScribbler · 11/11/2024 18:08

letmego24 · 09/11/2024 22:03

Well that's not very fair I mean there are always options for good so for eg if you are a meat eater would you be happy if everything was plant based?

Well ..."When in France do as the French do". I went to my daughter's a while ago, and it was all vegan. It didn't hurt me to fit in.

I’m a veggie and I don’t expect to be catered for wherever I go but I think if everything was veggie at an event there would be uproar about there being no meat…

There would.

I'm not allergic to fish and seafood, I just hate it and can't eat it. I wouldn't want someone to pay for a meal for me at an event I wouldn't then eat. YABU

Rule of thumb......

  • 1/3 vegan
  • 1/3 vegetarian
  • 1/3 carnivore

Unless there's a chance that there might be a majority of vegans, vegetarians, non-pork eaters, etc

So not a chance I'd go for this. I find vegan food tasteless. How about 1/6 vegan, 1/3 vegetarian, and 1/2 real food!

How is vegan food tasteless when most herbs and spices are vegan? (And I say that as someone who eats meat)

Badly cooked food is tasteless regardless of whether it’s vegan, vegetarian or meat.

This is such a childish way of talking about food. Food doesn't have to contain meat, fish, eggs or dairy to be 'real food' or to be tasty. Perhaps you've tasted fake meat and assumed that's what vegan food is. It isn't. Marmite on toast is vegan. Hummus, falafel and salad in a flatbread is vegan. All sorts of curries, soups, pasta and rice dishes can be vegan.

PaminaMozart · 11/11/2024 19:31

Off the top of my head...

Hummus
Baba Ganoush
Walnut and roast pepper spread
Tabbouleh
Falafel with tahini sauce
Vegetable samosas (pastry made with oil rather than butter
Spiced roasted potatoes
Rice with caramelized onions and lentils, served with Fatoush
Quinoa with roast vegetables and parsley
Cauliflower mash with garlicky/lemony basil pesto
Lebanese lemony lentil soup

I'm sure I could come up with a few more if I put my mind to it...

DataPup · 11/11/2024 19:34

pointed the non-dairy at the vegan and that was it

A lot of vegan things aren't actually suitable for people with a milk allergy.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 11/11/2024 19:48

My nephew has a severe dairy allergy but allergies to pulses & pea protein that are nearly as bad. No good just pointing him at the vegan food, though I think he often takes his own stuff anyway.

RecklessGoddess · 11/11/2024 19:57

I always find it annoying on programs like Come Dine With Me, that everyone is expected to make a special meal for vegetarians or vegans, when those vegetarians and vegans never make a special meal in return, for the meat eaters. My sister is a vegan, but will still cook a meat version for meat eaters, because they would do a special vegan meal for her!

PeachyPeachTrees · 11/11/2024 19:57

I'm lactose intolerant, it makes me really ill but it's not an allergy. I hate being pointed to the vegan section. Fake cheese is literally disgusting.

AnnieSnap · 11/11/2024 20:01

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 22:06

Really? I'm sure people can cope without meat for one meal

They can, but a lot of meat eaters think cooked animal carcass is essential!
