To think that it isn't insane to have a 'just in case' bag?

DH thinks I'm being overly cautious with this, I don't. So I thought I'd get the opinion of the hive mind.

I'm very forgetful and often get stressed if I haven't got something I need - even basics, like lip balm. It makes me feel even more unorganised than I already am.

It's a pencil case, so isn't huge, but it contains lots of essentials and some not essential items.

I have suspected ND (currently undergoing investigation) and I saw someone online had made one. Boom. Brilliant idea.

I tend to take it with me to work, just in case, hence the name of it!

Thoughts?

I’m going to steal your idea. It’s great.

Me too, I'm always moving bits and pieces between bags, it would be so much easier if they were all together in one place.

I had to do a course for work once and one of the things they recommended was always having a "grab bag" packed and kept somewhere near your documents / wallet. So eg. Change of clothes, pjs, toothbrush / toothpaste, deodorant, book, money, phone charger / power bank, spares of any medications and an empty water bottle, snacks etc. Then if there was ever a family emergency, hospital emergency, flood, blackout, gas leak or anything that needed you to leave your house, you could just grab that one bag and go.

It's a great idea. When I lived in Japan for a couple of years I had one, an 'earthquake' bag. But I don't have one in the UK, maybe I should.

A bit of planning goes a long way towards reducing stress - if it doesn't get in the way, and it's not going to prepper-levels of madness, then what's the harm?

A bit like when I used to play in bands - my bandmates always thought I was insane, because I always kept a £20 note in my guitar case (quite distinctive, so difficult to steal). Until, that is, someone went through all our stuff while we were on stage one night and nicked all our wallets/purses.

Would've been a very long walk home with the gear, that.

I have the same. I call it my emergency kit. Pain killer, plasters, tissues, wipes, cotton buds, tweezers, mirror, lip balm, little savlon, £1 coin, Pen, little pad, nail file - few other bits. Can't tell you how many people it has come to the rescue of! People may criticise but they're always the ones that rely on me having everything in my Mary Poppins bag!

I keep something similar in my handbag and another one on my coffee table. The coffee table one lives in an organiser tray that also contains pens, glasses, remote control, etc. My sister does something similar and we’re both ND but I suspect a lot of neuro-typical people do this too - the difference is that with us, NOT doing these things can cause extreme anxiety!

Good luck with your diagnosis. My Tourette’s wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my 40s and it’s been a huge help in understanding why I find the world so difficult. Hope it helps you as well xxx

Not insane at all, infact a lady I worked with has a just incase she ends up in hospital bag, as she knew she would have everything she needs, saving her husband finding things and probably bringing wrong stuff. It then made me do one too, I also have a just incase it snows bag , with something warm , sweets etc. Never a bad thing to be prepared! I'm not one of these people though that goes mad on buying tons of tolilet paper and tins etc

DH isn't overly serious about it, and he's more of the 'I only take what fits in my pockets. Until it doesn't and I'll hijack DW's bag'

The pencil case I use is fairly large to be fair, it has sections, pockets, and pockets inside pockets.

I have:
Sanpro - tampons & pads
Paracetamol
Antihistamines
Marker pen
Pencil
Hand gel
Compressed towels
Hand wipes
Breath mints
Soap sheets
Plasters
Spare meds (enough for 24hrs)
Straw
Lip balm
Small power bank
USBC cable
Heat patch (stick on)
Hair bobble
£5
Radar key
Nail file
Sandwich bag
Small sewing kit
Rubber bands
Small whistle
EDC - penknife, screwdriver, etc

I don't feel like it's complete, but it definitely helps my peace of mind knowing that I've got stuff if I need it

And in reply to PP, I don't carry a handbag, I usually just grab the nearest backpack. This also means that stuff like sanpro is in all the bags I do use, but I forget the small / infrequently used stuff

It sounds perfectly sensible whether you are forgetful or not. Not sure why DH objects unless he finds you overly cautious most the time, and too given to over planning?

Packetofcrispsplease · 02/12/2024 08:24

It sounds a good idea to me , I am similar in that my usual handbag has my purse , attached to a little key ring on my purse is a trolley token thing because that’s often needed , in purse is change for the toilet 🚻 ( I’ve been caught out before )
Also in handbag is plain lip balm , asthma inhaler, dissolvable paracetamol, throat lozenges, comb , hair tie , a very small concealer foundation stick and tissues .
As things get used up I replace so these things are always in there .
I also have a dog walk bag that always has dog treats , poop bags , my 2nd asthma inhaler , hair tie , tissues and hand sanitizer.
again I re stock bag as needed .
as I head out I pop my phone in either bag ( phone has section for bank cards )
