To think that it isn't insane to have a 'just in case' bag?

WeeOrcadian · 09/11/2024 18:51

DH thinks I'm being overly cautious with this, I don't. So I thought I'd get the opinion of the hive mind.

I'm very forgetful and often get stressed if I haven't got something I need - even basics, like lip balm. It makes me feel even more unorganised than I already am.

It's a pencil case, so isn't huge, but it contains lots of essentials and some not essential items.

I have suspected ND (currently undergoing investigation) and I saw someone online had made one. Boom. Brilliant idea.

I tend to take it with me to work, just in case, hence the name of it!

Thoughts?

Great idea, I always need a lip gloss or plasters, paracetamol, spare knickers would come in handy for time of the month as well as pads/tampons. Ignore your partner

A phone charging thing I’d understand but being anxious about not having lip balm is not something I get. I do like to have a lip balm but it’s hardly emergency stuff. Mind you, I have an allergy that triggers my asthma and I regularly risk it and go out without my inhaler. It’s so rarely an issue.

A tin of vaseline is essential to me, I need it with me at all times as I can't stand dry lips 😆
OP is it just stuff that goes in a handbag? I have everything in there

Gingernan · 10/11/2024 19:51

I suffer from ibs a d anxiety and I never go anywhere without painkillers, immodium or similar, baby wipes, toilet roll, as well as hairbrush, lipstick, small perfumes, small boxes of juice and gluten free biscuits. If the grandkids are with me, extra drinks snacks and wipes. And their coats whatever the weather. I don't drive so I'm a bag lady when we go out.

Thefsm · 10/11/2024 19:53

Not stupid at all. In DBT we had to make a self care kit to take with us every where. Mine contains a touch stone, a small essential oil bottle with a smell I like, an embroidery hoop and needle and thread and some beads for if I need to create something instead of self harming. Also some candy.

Deeperthantheocean · 10/11/2024 19:57

I triplicate certain items ... downstairs, bedroom and car. Oh and handbag as well.

Hand gel, moisturising cream, Tissues, lipstick, spectacles, phone chargers, lip balm, eyebrow pencils.

Makes life simpler for me, yes I have issues. X

JerryGiraffe · 10/11/2024 19:59

I have one too, includes a brush, handcream, paracetamol, carmex lip balm, asthma pump, spare glasses, hair elastic, sanitary stuff, indigestion tablets dental floss. I also have one in my car. I think it's a very practical thing to do personally

Portakalkedi · 10/11/2024 20:12

Isn't this the kind of stuff we carry in our handbags anyway? From the title I thought you meant a 'go bag' packed with clothes etc in case of emergency situation. I used to live in an earthquake prone country and we always kept go bags by the door in case.

DilemmaDelilah · 10/11/2024 20:22

I have one - but it is my hospital just in case bag, containing jammies, chargers etc. I needed it yesterday!

mooncatgrover · 10/11/2024 21:08

I must be an odd one out as I don’t even take a hand bag with me. Everything I need goes in my pocket. Phone, cigarettes and lighter and keys. Everything else can be picked up as and when needed

Susanw1985 · 10/11/2024 21:45

I have had one of these since I was in school - I use a make up bag with meds, sweets, plasters, sts, dry shampoo, toothpaste, deoderant etc - used to keep tights when at school. Ones in work call it my mum bag and are very grateful when they need something from it! 3 autistic kids but no diagnosis myself but very much realise I am!

anon666 · 10/11/2024 18:37

I have this. I take a lot of stuff round with me everywhere.

I'm now wondering if this conforns my neurodiversity. 😬

Indon't think I am ND and I do this too. It just seems like plain common sense to me and says more about having good organisational skills that neurodiversity

1WanderingWomble · 10/11/2024 21:57

I have one but I can rarely remember where I've put it so that kind of defeats the object...I'm massively disorganised though!

Vynalbob · 10/11/2024 21:58

I have one DP has one..... Makes sense.....but
I keep adding random "stuff" so will end up upgrading to a backpack....or it will spontaneously explode 🙄

OhcantthInkofaname · 10/11/2024 22:04

My entire handbag is a "just in case I need this bag" since I had babies.

But that’s just…

…a handbag?

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 09/11/2024 18:53

Not sure what items you have in it that are causing controversy, but surely lots of people carry such things. I have a little pouch that I can move between bags with various things in it - paracetamol, lip balm, nail file, glasses wipes etc. May not be that everyone does that, but don't think it's unusual.

I have one too, in fact more than one.

presumably DH doesn't eith have a bag or know very many women whose handbag he's allowed to forage in?

so what makes him the expert?

I also have a small bag with 'emergency' bits in for days my tummy is playing up. Spare knit, wet wipes, pair of leggings plastic bag. I only take that when my tummy is bad though.

in summer I have a grab bag with sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (old pair)

I also have a packed hospital bag. I started that after being rushed into hospital to have my appendix out. That was packed in haste but I've maintained a bag since. It made going into hospital after an accident easier as well, a friend was able to collect it for me, & deliver it to me. (I live alone)

oh & the boot of the car. Emergency car stuff, & accident stuff (blanket, first aid etc), winter stuff (old coat, welly boots, scarf, gloves, sleeping bag) and bored/thirsty in a serious traffic delay (water, biscuits, plastic box to wee in, water wipes, puzzle book, reading book) umbrella, shoes I can walk in comfortably. blah blah

can't think what else just now....

buffyspikefaith · 09/11/2024 19:13

I always have one. Plus a hospital bag packed

My small one has
Painkillers, nail file, lip balm, hand cream, tiny multi tool, plasters, tampons, mini pack of wipes, deo, mini perfume and some other bits I can't remember

Hospital bag
Pjs, clean top, socks, underwear, flip flops, charger bank, charger lead, headphones, book, spare medication, then stuff like a mini shower gel, deo, wipes, cleanser, ear plugs

I prepared a hospital bag during the first Covid lockdown after reading about them here. It’s getting larger though as I think of other things I should add! If I get taken in my ambulance, the paramedics might refuse to carry it!

I do go through it every few months to make sure the water and snacks are in date, hours spent with my mum in A&E has taught me what items are useful! The snacks are because I need to take very strong pain relief every few hours and feel sick if I take them on an empty stomach.

I’ve just thought of something else I need to put in it, a list of family phone numbers and key information like the outside key safe code so someone can get in my house, just in case I lose my phone or have no signal!

Almost all of my female friends do this. Me too. Excellent idea.

crockofshite · 11/11/2024 06:36

I think lots of people have a pouch with essentials that's moved between handbags. It also keeps handbag linings clean from pen marks etc

Candy1985 · 11/11/2024 07:50

I have a winter just in case bag ready! I live in the hills so if it snows I’m fucked basically, I have it ready to go if we need to stay elsewhere for a couple of nights. Very sensible idea if you ask me!!

WillowTit · 11/11/2024 07:52

my friend talked about a just in case bag, kept under the bed, in case of emergency

Same!

Indulgingmum · 11/11/2024 08:01

I'm neuro typical and I have one.

The number of times we have been out and my husband or the kids have needed a bandaid, safety pin, tampax??????

I recommend to everyone.

CatherineDurrant · 11/11/2024 09:16

I have a couple of little JIC bags depending on whether I am out of the house in professional role or with children. It's certainly not insane, he's just embarassed/jealous he's not in a positional to handle things like you are.

I have a kit in the back of the car and a "powercut box" in the house too, which I've been grateful for twice in the last few months alone.

If my DH had suggested I was insane for being organised, he could swing for a power bank the next time the electricity went off or he needed his passport number for a form.
