To think that it isn't insane to have a 'just in case' bag?

WeeOrcadian · 09/11/2024 18:51

DH thinks I'm being overly cautious with this, I don't. So I thought I'd get the opinion of the hive mind.

I'm very forgetful and often get stressed if I haven't got something I need - even basics, like lip balm. It makes me feel even more unorganised than I already am.

It's a pencil case, so isn't huge, but it contains lots of essentials and some not essential items.

I have suspected ND (currently undergoing investigation) and I saw someone online had made one. Boom. Brilliant idea.

I tend to take it with me to work, just in case, hence the name of it!

Thoughts?

Sounds quite reasonable to me. I have similar.

sillygoof · 09/11/2024 21:04

This thread has really inspired me to get organised, I’ve never got much with me - also ND, I’m not good at being organised. So maybe if I just do it once and leave that in that car, it might be really helpful.

I do, however, have a Swiss Army knife keyring which is worth its weight in gold. I can’t count the number of times I’ve used the little scissors.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 09/11/2024 21:05

Completely normal. Even my 12 year old carries that type of stuff around with her (her idea, not mine). I keep a bag in my car which has deodorant, hand cream, lip balm, Tic Tacs, medicine, charger, etc and another bag with gluten free cereal bars and peppermint tea. Got to cover all bases!

User37482 · 09/11/2024 21:05

I have one, also a pencil case, lip balm, pain killers, hairband, sanitary towel, hand cream, deodorant in the car. Seems sensible to me. Used to carry a power bank as well.

When DC were small, spare clothes in the car at all times.

For those who have bug out bags - is there any point if you don’t have a secret cabin in the woods and plenty of buried staches along the way?

who says I don't? .....but in the real world, I had my car set up so the dogs and I could sleep in there for a night or more. It wouldn't have been massively comfortable but it would have been ok in an emergency.

Singleandproud · 09/11/2024 21:07

@graceinspace999 not sure whether that was a serious post or not - although I do have keys to our work depot which is in the middle of fields nexts to a river with a boat so that would be where I would head with my bag in case of the zombie apocalypse.

But on a more serious note I've kept a hospital bag packed and ready ever since I was once admitted and had no one close to get me things. I had to have an acquaintance attempt to find things as I was living away from home, hadn't done any washing in a week due to being ill - it wasn't great. At least now I can say, the green suitcase under the bed and know everything they bring will fit and that no one's had to rifle through my pants drawer

Oh I LOVE a Swiss Army Knife

SiobhanSharpe · 09/11/2024 21:08

I have most, if not all of the above actually on me (meds) or packed in a small bag when I travel.
(I now double and triple check that I have my meds on my person after DH, who was taking everything down and loading the car, left my essentials bag behind. He had assured me he had loaded everything)

Rainbow321 · 09/11/2024 21:12

If the item /s are relatively cheap then why not have multiples of it . Using your lip balm as example , I have a few handbags , each has a lip balm in them.
I have a car , dh has a car, lip balm in each .
My chair in living room is near a coffee table with a drawer = lip balm , lastly one by bed .

Bellyblueboy · 09/11/2024 21:13

Great idea! I would have paracetamol, tampons, cold sore cream, safety pin, burn cream, anti histamine, wet wipes, mini deodorant, hand sanitizer and plasters!

let’s brain storm

Butterworths · 09/11/2024 21:16

I call mine my EDC (every day carry). It has a phone charge cable, a couple of pound coins, my little card purse, a mini hairbrush, safety pin, mirror compact, lipstick, paracetamol, a pen, my earbuds, my keys, a pen and a penknife! Its all in a surprisingly small leather zipped pouch.

I've been doing this about two years it works brilliantly for me. It lives in my work bag all week then in whatever handbag I need at the weekends,

Ghosttofu99 · 09/11/2024 21:17

starts making bag

godmum56 · 09/11/2024 21:20

I keep a little sewing set in mine...needles, a couple of safety pins and some cotton. You can even ready thread the needles. Blooming helpful if a button comes off.

stargazerlil · 09/11/2024 21:20

First stop lip balm in a hand bag next stop fully stocked apocalypse bunker by the sounds of some of these posts, but who’s to say that’s wrong. You never know….

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 09/11/2024 21:22

I have IBS so my just in case bag is immodium, spare pair of knickers and a radar key in every handbag!

Lemon teabags - office coffee machine is temperamental and frequently there is no milk, but I can usually get boiling water out of the machine. I like lemon teabags, and they will do a couple of cups per bag.

Pack of tissues - obvious

Emergency bus fare - cheaper than emergency taxi fare

Black pen - can spend ages looking through colleagues drawers looking for a pen. Don't know what they do with them.

Oh I see, each for a separate situation.

I was imagining: broken down car therefore tissue to wipe hands after checking engine, then tissue doubles as writing paper and use black pen to leave a note on the dash to say broken down, bus fare to get to a garage and lemon tea bag so you can ask for hot water (no need to require milk/sugar) to warm up while engineer goes out to retrieve car.

Apollo365 · 09/11/2024 21:33

great idea! I have similar in the car where the spare wheel is

HaveYouGotNoMoreHolly · 09/11/2024 21:33

I really don't understand these emergency get away bags that posters say are intended for leaving the house if it was damaged again, or a hospital stay

Surely these things go out of date/need using up and just sat there for ages otherwise?

Full disclaimer being that I have a grab and go bag with toiletries and change of clothes - But my DC is a regular in hospital so it gets used

hamsandyams · 09/11/2024 21:34

Isn’t that what most people keep in their handbags? I have a Kate Loxton pouch with paracetamol, anti histamines, lipstick, lip balm, eyeliner, plasters, safety pins, some coins and £10, a perfume and a deodorant stick. It moves between bags with me, and I also have most of that in my glove box too.

mrsmiawallace3 · 09/11/2024 21:36

Last Monday at 4am, a drug addict burst into my bedroom with a torch shouting " Gimme your bag, where is your bag!". My bag was beside me on the bed. I threw it at him forcefully. He seemed winded and confused, and turned to run back downstairs. I called the Gardai who arrived within ten minutes. Fortunately, while he got a few credit cards and a small amount of cash, my phone, car and house keys were all in my 'other' handbag ! He is already in custody thanks to CCTV.

Bellyblueboy · 09/11/2024 21:37

Having seen a few relatives taken into hospital at short notice I have toyed with the idea of having a hospital bag! Silly I know - but PJs, toiletries, phone charger, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, sleeping eye mask, noise canceling headphones.

Mynparents are elderly and I have prepared these bags for them. We have used them twice for dad .

most of it is stuff like tissues and knickers that don't go out of date ditto a spare phone charger. Stuff like paracetamol keeps years and so do wipes if they are sealed. When I had dogs on medication, I used to rotate the stuff in the grab and go when I got the next prescription, so once every 3 months.

Look unless you have had bone-crippling anxiety then it is going to be difficult to explain to anyone how this helps.

You do you,...but maybe set yourself some safeguards so the pre-planning doesn't get too out of hand.

I keep a Hi Viz coat in there too.

I also have a just in just in case in case pencil case, just in case I ever forget my just in case pencil case.

So far I have never forgotten both my just in case pencil case and my just in just in case in case pencil case but am considering adding a third, just in case I ever do.
