i am going on a once in a lifetime holiday to a fabulous beachy and instagrammable worthy location and feeling horrible about my size 20 body with protruding a$$ and treble chins. i want to try this one meal a day thing for some instant results but bestie says it won't work for some one like me - mid 40s, hypothyroidism, binge issues in the past, and can actually make me sick. I don't want to be sick right before my bucket list vacation! Should I listen to her?

i don't plan to do low carb or anything, just eat one filling and balanced plate of my fav stuff, once a day. right now i'm at 85 kilos. I want my weight to be at least in the seventies when I leave for my xmas vacay. i have seen so many inspiring progress pics online about the OMAD lifestyle it's really giving me hope. But most of these are from men, so I don't know if it really works for perimenopausal women! Aibu to even consider this with my current health profile?

Eat porridge for breakfast

Chicken salad for lunch

Dinner meat and veg

Pylwin · 09/11/2024 02:12

And go for as long a walk as you can every day or at least for 30 mins

Pylwin · 09/11/2024 02:13

Only eat though when you actually feel hungry

user1473878824 · 09/11/2024 02:15

Maybe bestie knows best

TheSilkWorm · 09/11/2024 02:18

Fine to try OMAD, it has some health benefits. Expecting to lose a kilo a week is a bit unrealistic. It's also silly to try to change your body just for a holiday. Enjoy the holiday, nobody will care what you look like.

FupaTrooper · 09/11/2024 02:20

In my opinion, low carb is the only thing that works. I've tried many things but the reason low carb works is you genuinely are less hungry and you can eat a really good amount.

My mum has thyroid issues and is 68 and she lost a bit more that 6kg in 6 weeks doing very strict keto. She did a 3 hour eating window and I did the same. So from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

I lost 8kg in 5 weeks on it :)
I have struggled with my weight my whole life and have PCOS.

So, yes it is possible... But if I was you I would consider going low carb.

Also sizing is so weird and varied. You are a UK 20 at 86 kgs?

At my biggest I was 105kg and I fit most high street size 18s and even some 16s lol.

StandingSideBySide · 09/11/2024 02:24

Exercise…a lot.
Walking fast, not strolling and preferably up hills.
Every day

Porridge as PP has mentioned for breakfast
Salad, veg soup for lunch. Preferably home cooked with just steamed veg, stock and blended….no bread on the side
Protein and veg for dinner.
Use a side plate for the dinner meal to keep the portion size small and
Eat two fruits a day as a snack if you are hungry

No sugar in drinks,

You need to use up in exercise or eat 7000cals a week less ( according to intel from dieticians ) to loose 2 lbs ( 1kg = 2.2lbs )

There might be a calc online where you can put in ht, weight, age etc to find out your required calories / day then go from there.
Good luck

Ps. Since you have started this thread in the early hours it’s worth mentioning according to Michael Mosley going to bed at 10:30 / 11 to sleep is the ideal time for weight control.

this sounds lovely but i can never do portion control, i love food and i just stuff my face with it even if it's just porridge... the reason why i am in this situation ig

Yes it is possible. OMAD isn’t unhealthy as long as you ensure you eat enough. I did this to try to heal my gut as I trashed it eating Quorn.

When I did it, I started with a plate of lettuce and tomato with olive oil and vinegar. Then ate my meal ensuring plenty of veg and protein and not too much carb. I then had finished it off with some crackers, butter and marmite. All in all it did take an hour to eat my food.

I counted my calories to ensure I was eating enough to stave off hunger for the next 24 hours. The first couple of days are tough to adjust to. After that it’s fine.

i walk 15 min each way to work, should I do more? I also swim three days a week. No lifting though, due to a bad back.

i'm prediabetic (sorry forgot to add this in my op) so i tend to feel peckish a lot. I do drink a lot of water as i was told that a lot of times hunger is really thirst, but still sometimes I feel really hungry and then end up overeating.

Okay... point taken. I will tone down my expectation and just see if I can do this for the next 6 weeks. Even if I manage to lose only a couple of weeks, Ig that's a win.

You don't have to portion control

Have a banana with your porridge because you need to feel full in the morning

A normal bowl of porridge will fill me up till lunch but if not then I'll have a banana at break

@captainmarvella honestly, if you’re not prepared to try and portion control three meals a day how do you think you’re going to survive and stick to eating one meal a day for a month and a half?

eat nice, healthy, balanced and filling meals and calorie count and exercise and make that a long term plan.

very inspiring to hear your experience (and your mom's), thanks, i'm now feeling more hopeful. i know low carb is the best but i tried it many times annd have always failed... i love my rice pasta and chocolate too much:(

and the sizing oh god i have such a nightmare shopping... my frame is medium (5.5 ft) but everything protrudes, belly, b00bs, so size 18 just looks tight and feels uncomfortable too

Talk to your healthcare provider. You have previously had an eating disorder and OMAD may not be appropriate for you. Be aware that some people posting may have disordered eating themselves.

right this is another thing i am not rlly sure about still. what is omad, exactly? eat one filling plate in 10-15 minutes or you can eat that one plate over the course of one hour, 2 hours? i am aiming for 2-3 hours tbh

Yes it is possible, if you develop the will to and are prepared to be a bit miserable.
I've lost 28lbs since September 6th by sticking strictly to the Keto diet (often following OMAD) and by drinking zero alcohol. ONLY drink water (and the odd coffee with a bit of cream/coconut milk dashed in). Go to the gym approx three times per week (I've been doing 1/2 an hour cardio of some sort and a 1/2 hour swim - nothing too intense because I'm really shit at it). I'm late 30s.

i did a trial run of omad for a couple of days and i was able to do it, albeit for 3 hours i.e. i filled a plate with my fav food (meat and veggies with rice/pasta and hummus) i ate it over 3 hours (12pm to 3pm), i didn't feel hungry at all as long as i went to bed early... i think i can do this until mid december, i just want to know if it s going to give any side effects that will make me sick

i don't drink, chocolate is my alcohol 😢im not cut out for keto m afraid... but perhaps a gym is a good idea. there's one near my workplace, may be i should sign up to give an extra boost for my 6 week plan
