This article really makes me believe that our whole legal system was drafted by abusers and for abusers. The most prolific sex offender in the Chufch of England was a Barrister. On top of that, Justin Welby who basically knew what he was up to, only 'considered' resigning. He should resign - no question about it.

If you have no moral compass you should be excluded from the making or implementation of laws. End of.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby considered resigning over 'appalling' barrister abuse scandal

John Smyth QC's abuse was covered up within the Church of England for years, an independent review found.

Couldn't agree more! He should DEFINITELY resign!

smilingeleanor · 08/11/2024 22:44

absolutely agree - his position is surely untenable and the senior colleagues who advised him not to resign equally deluded

if you are talking to others about moral compass then you have to have integrity

Religious leaders immoral and hypocritical is not a shock headline.

Noseybookworm · 08/11/2024 22:50

Apparently this man was a good friend of the Arch Bish. They all bloody cover for each other. This is why I avoid all organised religion!

username7891 · 08/11/2024 22:53

Why would someone collude with child abuse?

BarbaraHoward · 08/11/2024 22:56

YANBU.

I grew up in Ireland as the true horror of clerical abuse was revealed. It seemed at the time that the Catholic church in Ireland was an outlier, but I'm increasingly thinking any organisation that puts men in power is the same.

It's not about religion it's about the set-up of our whole country. I'm starring to think our country is run by sex offenders and colluders. Why else are our sexual assault and rape convictions so low? Paedophiles somehow seem to manage to get lighter sentences than they should. Why it happens is now very obvious.

Totally agree. How did Hugh Edwards end up with a suspended sentence?? Those who make the rules are the ones that don't abide by it
It's about time we took our judiciary back into public power instead of unelected officials in the ministry of justice.

I'm afraid this is very true. Many powerful men have been found to be predators and some of the remarks by judges over the years have been reprehensible. The police have been known to collude with abusers.

Welby is just another man of the cloth who allowed a child abuser free reign.

This is why the laws surrounding sexual crimes are so woolly. If a defendant "reasonably believes the victim consented" then it didn't happen. It's a complete get out of jail free card. They're disgusting people.

He needs to resign immediately, how dare he stay in his role when he has allowed such evil abuse.

This. I can't believe people are still genuinely surprised when these stories keep coming round.
