Air ambulance. Absolutely anyone at any age could benefit at any time.

BeaBachinasec · 08/11/2024 20:12

Animal rescue. Grass roots who actually do the work, not the big names.

AnotherEmma · 08/11/2024 20:14

Citizens Advice - local offices - because they give free help to people who often have no other option. People who are vulnerable because they have physical and/or mental health issues, disabilities, or they can't read or write, or they can't speak English... etc etc. Of course Citizens Advice will advise anyone but the people who need them the most benefit massively from the help given.

Disclaimer: I work for a local Citizens Advice, and I am really committed to the work we do, none of us do it for the money (it's not well paid, and lots of advisers are volunteers), we do it because we believe in it.

AnotherEmma · 08/11/2024 20:15

(Just to add: we help people who don't have an appealing charity to represent them - cute animal charities, cancer charities etc... charities for disabled and disadvantaged people don't tend to get so many donations.)

Unique it supports children and families with rare chromosome disorder, s they.helpedc me a lot when my son was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder when he was three
But if you want to support charities maybe look at at the smaller one ,s in your community they are always in need of support and funds ?

BeaBachinasec · 08/11/2024 20:16

AnotherEmma - I'm always signposting people to CA.

Out of interest, do you receive government funding? I bloody hope so!

Yes, from local councils. It's often short-term (ie year by year) which makes it really hard for senior management to plan and budget, and means they are constantly applying for the next round of funding. However, we have a recently managed to persuade our councils to consider funding us for 3 years which would be very helpful.

Each local citizens advice is an independent registered charity, and I believe their funding sources will differ, but most get some funding from local councils. We have some generous patrons too. Oh and the DWP did fund a national project (that contract was with national citizens advice who then allocated funding and targets to local offices). But it is important to note that we are independent so we support people to challenge the DWP or the council if needed (which it often is, as you can imagine!)

The only charity I support is a city farm near me which does amazing things to help the community....I'd much rather give to a smaller charity than a large one.

Wordsmithery · 08/11/2024 20:44

I really like the work of Medecins sans Frontieres. They help ordinary people caught in the crossfire in wars around the world.
Closer to home, I'd always want to support my local women's refuge for the lifeline they give to desperate families.

Ted22 · 08/11/2024 20:46

Medicine Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders). They do amazing work.

Plus I once saw a breakdown of top charities and % of donations which actually went to the cause (as apposed to staff salaries, office rents, etc). MSF ranked the highest, with 80% of all donations going on medical care. Most big charities are more like 20-60% that actually gets spent on the cause.

Yes, agree!! It beggars belief that it's not centrally funded (mind you, could be said for most charities!!).

Plus, an amazing local hospice who have nursed many friends and colleagues

onlytherain · 08/11/2024 20:52

Coram - they are a fantastic organisation that really makes a difference in childrens' lives. I know them very well and they are excellent.

Medecins sans Frontiers - much needed work. I know someone who worked for them and she only speaks highly of them.

Children's hospice association Scotland (CHAS)

Theoscargoesto · 08/11/2024 21:04

Childline. I’m a volunteer counsellor and being a counsellor or donating means children and young people can always be supported. Anyone interested can look on the NSPCC website and see if there are opportunities in their area….. it can be difficult, but we are all really well supported and it’s the most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/11/2024 21:10

Dentaid - I have had terrible problems with my gums and teeth over the years and been in that special level of pain that toothache brings. Luckily I have can afford private dental care but do many people can't and have to suffer with the pain becatse trying ti get an NHS dentist is like trying to find gold dust. Dentaid have mobile dental surgeries that go out into areas where people can’t afford to pay for dentistry as well as working with homeless people.

Thelnebriati · 08/11/2024 21:11

Action for Young Carers, who support children who have caring responsibilities.

Catunderling · 08/11/2024 21:20

Brain tumour charity also Cats Protection and MSF

OnlyFrench · 08/11/2024 21:25

SANDS - stillborn and neonatal death, they were a great help to me in the days when you couldn't talk about these things
Young Minds - reassured me I was doing my best when DD made several suicide attempts
Local hospice - for so many friends and family

username7891 · 08/11/2024 21:49

Red Cross. I used to work for them and they do amazing work.

StripeyDeckchair · 08/11/2024 22:05

I'd suggest supporting your local hospice.
They do amazing work supporting people in their homes & also in residence in the hospice
Hospice care is not always for end of life, its can also be to sort out pain management & other issues.
Hospices are not solely for cancer support but for life limiting health issues & end of life.

I know all this because, sadly, over the year my family has had hospice involvement in a much loved family members care & death.
The care they, and we the family, received was outstanding & they are primarily funded by donations, not state health care funding.

BeaBachinasec · 08/11/2024 22:18

Thanks for your reply @AnotherEmma - keep up the good work!
