I also donate to Children in need and Stand up to Cancer .
I Sponser a child through Action aid too.

Shelter & our local Women's Centre. Nobody can function without a safe & secure home.

Squiggles23 · 09/11/2024 10:59

I would advise anyone donating to air ambulance charities to check their financial statements first. Some year ago now but my local one had enough donations in reserve that they could run the charity for 3 years if all donations stopped. There’s only so much they can spend money on it’s not like a homeless/animal charity where they could keep expanding. Once they had 2 or 3 helicopters and enough money for the staff they couldn’t keep growing.

I know this from auditing them as charities can only hold so much reserves.

Lifeboats. I live on the coastline seen so many lives saved

DancefloorAcrobatics · 09/11/2024 11:09

Sue Ryder Care. They run hospices and also offer bereavement support.

Anyone could need their help and support at any point in their life.

Buggabootwo · 09/11/2024 11:14

RNLI. They have over 250 lifeboat stations and provide lifeguard cover for over 250 beaches in the summer. It’s a gigantic effort, building and maintaining boats, looking after the stations, providing training for extreme situations, etc. They get bad press for the channel, but they save lives at sea without judgement or prejudice. I think they are one of the best things in our country.

Women’s Aid. Specifically buy a number of smallish denomination vouchers for Tesco etc and donate the vouchers to local Women’s Aid shelters. The women who need the support will get 100% rather than donating cash to a big charity which might use it for corporate hospitality etc.

Animal charities and anything to do with wildlife.

Charities which are abroad - how do we know where the money is going?
Charity starts at home.

Whammyammy · 09/11/2024 11:31

The Blue Cross. As i prefer animals to humans

What a gross point of view

Salvation Army was one of my favourite charities but I've now read they've associated with bloody Stonewall!

Seriously 😦
That’s appalling.

why is it, if you have help needed in eg uk , then why is it wrong to prioritise those first ?

Moier · 09/11/2024 15:14

Thankyou loads to think about and research.
As l said l already give to my local hospice.
Local Andys man's club.
Local well womens centre... who help with women's health .. physically and mentally.. DA and DV. They really helped me in the past.
I also given my local home education group.
I support the Autistic society ( four Grandkids and one child with this.).
I think Air Aumbulance is very popular.
Some Animal charities too.

Air ambulance, cancer research, local animal rescues, RBL, mental health

whoputallofthatthere · 09/11/2024 17:11

Four Paws, BAD UK, Cats Protection, and a local animal rescue are my favourites, but support others as and when I can - Air Ambulance, Coeliac UK, Guide Dogs, sometimes Salvation Army at Christmas.
One thing I really dislike is when you donate online and the charity bombards you with letters for the rest of time, despite the fact I always tick the box asking them not to! It's such a waste of funds. I want them to use my money to help people/animals, not post me letters/calendars/pens/Christmas cards.

Not really. 🤷‍♀️

How are we supposed to know where the money is going towards?

NomenNudum · 09/11/2024 18:15

You know as much when it is going abroad as when it is in the UK.

Kirbert2 · 09/11/2024 18:18

Anything relating to childhood cancer charity’s as my son has recently completed treatment.

Young Lives vs Cancer is a good national one.

Brananan · 09/11/2024 18:20

Air ambulance. We've had the misfortune of needing it.

Member984815 · 09/11/2024 18:20

Kevin Bell repatriation fund , they helped repatriate a relative who was killed abroad . They were wonderful and obviously understood the grief given what they had been through themselves.

InThePinkScarf · 09/11/2024 18:26

A children's cancer charity.

catin8oots · 09/11/2024 18:31

Any of the criminal justice charities. The work they do is seriously underfunded due to stigma.

Prison Advice and Care Trust
Women in Prison
Prisoners Advice Service
Nacro
Prison Reform Trust

And all the smaller more local ones

Mademetoxic · 09/11/2024 18:45

NomenNudum · 09/11/2024 18:15

You know as much when it is going abroad as when it is in the UK.

But if there's help needed in the UK, then why not help our own first before others?

NomenNudum · 09/11/2024 19:01

Because it makes the world a better place if people aren't dying needlessly of starvation, even if they are outside the UK

imanidiotsandwich · 09/11/2024 19:04

Find some smaller volunteer run ones.
Your money makes much of a difference to them.
