thanks it’s good to know

Can't imagine being like some people here having 18/20 year gaps between first and last children, spending so many years reproducing.
I don't know anyone with more than 3 children and that's in my generation( 60s). When I had children most of us had 2, and now in my grandchild's class ( age 10) at least half are only children.
What makes you want to have 4,5 or more children? Presumably you are well off so you can afford big houses with each child having their own room, 7 seater car, huge food bills etc.

I love children and I come from a big family. It’s mine and my husband’s desire so why not I guess..if me and my husband are happy to have that many.

Of course it's your choice, it's just so unusual these days and seems like so much hard work, I couldn't imagine it.

LilacTurtle · 08/11/2024 20:46

I had my fourth at 28.

And yes me and my husband are in very well paid job so can afford it. And do live in a 6 bed house with a massive garden so the kids can run around and have that space.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone was in late 30s maybe even early 40s having a 4th or 5th child. They probably have good fertility with that many kids!

Diversion · 08/11/2024 20:49

1st at 22, almost 23. 2nd at 25, 3rd at 28, 4th at 30.

Well that’s fair enough. Not everyone can manage so many kids or wish to have so many which is fair enough and nothing wrong with that some people like to have 1 or 2 or 5… if they can provide a loving healthy home that’s all that matters… I just don’t know why people say you get less time with them if you have your last baby at 40..

Its a strange question as having 4 or 5 children is quite unusual to start with so other than the statistical answer that a PP has posted what are you hoping to find out?

If you want to have more children why does it matter what anyone else does?

It's obvious that you have less time alive with every subsequent child you have, what is confusing you about that?

4th at 26
5th at 36…. I’m 41 now and open minded to another. Just in the hands of nature?

FcukTheDay · 08/11/2024 20:56

I have my 4th at 26.

1st 22
2nd 23
3rd 25
4th 26

It was bloody knackering but I am 35 now and glad that I had them all then. I have managed to build up my career since and it's nice that they're all fairly independent while I am still young. But everyone does it differently, it has to be right for you.

Because you do quite literally, have less time with them. That’s how the passage of time works.

I've read your posts and tbh they aren't very clear to me, loads of women have children in their late 30s

VivaVivaa · 08/11/2024 20:59

This thread is eye opening. The very small number of couples I know that have 4+ DC had their last DC way into their 30s, if not their early-mid 40s. I barely know anyone who had 2 kids by the age of 30, let alone 4!

Anisty · 08/11/2024 17:59

Had my 4th at 35 and 5th at 40. 5th would have been at 38 but i had a lot of early mc between 4 and 5.

I hadn't had any losses up to and including 4th.

Very similar. 4th at 36 and 5th at 40 but early mc between.

Yes - I'd ignore anyone saying you have less time with them. My youngest has just left home (born when I was 40). I still feel fit enough that it wouldn't be a problem to raise another child if I wanted to. Expecting to have another 20-30 years to spend more time with all my dc.

It’s not nice hearing when they say less time because it makes you feel you shouldn’t do it for that reason. Hence why I started this thread to see actually how common it is… if that makes sense..
