To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 16:29

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

We don't have that rule either. But it's common sense. The bin stays fresh if everything is bagged. Mine is always bagged and the bin never gets grotty. The other lady might be the same, doesn't want mush in her bin.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 09/11/2024 13:30

I think it was fine and wouldn’t mind you putting it in my bin. A bag of rubbish? Not ok. But 1/2 a rice cake?! Fine.

I had some school kids throw rubbish on the pavement outside our house. I stopped them and asked them to pop it in my bin rather than litter the pavement. They apologised and picked it up and used our bin. I told them they’re welcome to use it if walking past rather than littering. It’s by far the best of the 2 options!

295bkq · 09/11/2024 13:32

Bins are provided for the use of a specific household - plus, in our area you are not allowed to put food in the general bin, it has to go into the food bin. So, I think she was justified in asking you to remove it. You could have left the ricecake on the floor and a bird would have eaten it.

Some people have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin. I’ve noticed it’s common in dementia. I can’t say I notice what’s in my bin.

I like my bin to have bagged stuff only. Keeps the interior clean, in case I need to unload the bags and take them to the tip. I think I'm entitled to keep my own bin clean without people putting sticky stuff in it. We're in our 40s with 2 teens.

You must be unreasonable OP the majority of the great and good of MN say so. Let this be a lesson to you.

Nah, it's a bin. For rubbish.

If it was dog shite or whatever then obviously don't use a random wheelie bin, but for just a bit of rubbish? Crack on. Can't imagine how fucking petty you have to be to get upset about something like that.

Edited

@Magnastorm

hsve you even bothered to read the thread or just rushed in to post your opinion??

lots of councils wouldn't empty her bin with a rice cake in it.(instead if in the food waste caddy)

plus lots of people just don't want to have to remove food stuck to their bins, when they put all their rubbish in the Bug Bin in bags.

AutumnLeaves24 · 09/11/2024 13:44

eddiemairswife · 08/11/2024 17:12

You should have left it on the ground for the birds.

That's what I'd have done.

some earlier mentioned attracting rats 😂😂birds around here wouldn't leave it on the ground long enough!!

TheGoogleMum · 09/11/2024 13:45

It's a bit rude and technically fly tipping, but probably a better option than just leaving it. She was overreacting but you aren't really meant to put rubbish in other people's bins

downwindofyou · 08/11/2024 17:24

People need to reframe their thinking. Start living as a community. Why the hell are people getting angry at someone putting something small and inconsequential into their bin. It's not harming anyone in any way. Are people seriously so small mealy mouthed and petty that they feel attacked or outraged or violated at someone putting a rice cake in their bin?

Such feeble small little people living small little lives getting upset over nothing.

Better in the bin than in the ground and no normal person would carry a rice cake home with them when there is a perfectly serviceable bin right there.

Grow up. Grow something. Stop being such pernickety sad little people.

@downwindofyou

try actually reading the thread!

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 16:38

Fair enough. I see some people saying I should have taken it home. I’ll note that for next time. It was in the right bin. I personally wouldn’t mind anyone putting something in my bin. As long as I wasn’t something like dog shit.

At least dog poo is bagged - not random food being chucked in, sinking its way to the bottom encouraging maggots/flies etc

ScholesPanda · 09/11/2024 13:53

In some places the council wouldn't empty the bin if they have a food waste system. Also, she may have randos dumping things in all the time- we get a lot of half-eaten takeaways in ours.

I can see how you did it though- mind elsewhere, looking after a small child, 'oh I have rubbish', 'oh here's a bin', so I wouldn't beat yourself up. Worse things happen at sea.

AutumnLeaves24 · 09/11/2024 13:53

skyandocean · 08/11/2024 22:20

Every one that has an issue, would you have preferred op left it on the ground, atleast she picked it up.

Yes, it's a rice cake, the birds would have eaten it.

AutumnLeaves24 · 09/11/2024 13:55

Pinkelephant66 · 08/11/2024 19:39

😂

I would’ve probs just left on the floor. Some animal would eat it no doubt!

such a weird thing to get upset over. As long as someone isn’t shitting in my bin I couldn’t give a toss

You wouldn't care if your bin didn't get emptied??

AlpacaMittens · 09/11/2024 13:56

I wouldn't care if you put a rice cake in my bin, provided it wasn't the wrong bin to put it in. And I definitely wouldn't have shouted at you!

What does boil my piss is random crap in the Glass bin that says GLASS ONLY on it. I regularly find coke cans, milk bottles, chocolate wrappers, all sorts of crap. Then I have to tip the bin over to fish tlthe crap out and put it in the correct bin.

Why???
if she'd left it on the GROUND a bird would have eaten it

TeenLifeMum · 09/11/2024 14:05

I just think it’s really rude to touch other people’s property and pretty baffled you needed to check on here. Thing is, the world is full of rude people so there’ll always be someone to say it’s fine. It’s not. Small rudeness but still rude. We’re a family of 5 and fill our bin. Can you imagine if everyone popped a small bit of rubbish in?

blueyismyg · 08/11/2024 16:40

All that fuss over half a rice cake.
What a sad life.

Absolutely!! Could understand if it was a black bag full of rubbish!

NewName24 · 09/11/2024 15:28

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 09/11/2024 13:07

Then you are lucky to live in an are where arseholes don't throw random rubbish in your bin because you can't be arsed to take it home, and that you bin people are kind enough to empty bin with random shit in it

I've already said that people walking past put things in our bin fairly often.
It really is no skin off my nose.
I would FAR rather people put something in my bin than left litter on the street.

I'm completely with @alloutofcareunits

Who wants to fish out a manky rice cake that someone else's toddler has dribbled all over?
But why would anyone be "fishing it out of the bin" ? Confused It will just sit there until it gets tipped into the bin lorry.

Makingchocolatecake · 09/11/2024 15:32

I do this sometimes and expect people to be funny with me but would they rather I threw it on the floor outside their house?

Technically it's the councils' property not the homeowners.

Whatamitodonow · 09/11/2024 15:40

It’s a bin.

i don’t get the need to keep outdoor bins “clean and fresh”. It’s a bin, for rubbish. Owned by the council.

i would far rather people put their crap in my bin than litter- I spend more time clearing up rubbish from the verge outside my house than I should.

as long as you aren’t preventing me from using my bin (filling it with bags, putting to wrong stuff in), crack on.

even dog shit, please put it in my bin and don’t hang it from the tree on the footpath.

BettyBardMacDonald · 09/11/2024 15:44

MumOfOneAllAlone · 08/11/2024 16:45

You shouldn't have put it in her bin but she was wrong for overreacting, especially as you were with small children - it's not really that big a deal x

Being with small children is not a free pass to trample boundaries and use other people's resources.

Walkers need to take the rice cake, dog poop or whatever home to their own bin.

Our food bins are not tipped into the lorry. One of the guys pushes a big bin along the street and lifts the bags out and puts them in the big bin, then takes the big bin to the lorry. He wouldn't be picking up random bits of food added in. He wants bags he can lift out of the caddies. It is just horrible to see old bits of stray food imo. It makes me gag. Totally disrespectful imo to impose this on someone.
