To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 16:29

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

good god it's a baby rice cake it's nothing! this thread is insane. I regularly don't bother to pick up bits of rice cake my baby has thrown from the pram if we are somewhere with lots of birds..

I can’t believe anyone actually cares about someone putting waste in their bin! It’s a bin, that’s what it’s for, not storing valuables. People put stuff in my bin all the time, including dog poo and I couldn’t care less.

And how did she expect you to get it out?! I wouldn’t be able to reach down into a wheelie bin to get anything out unless it was right on the top.

Moonchildalltheway · 08/11/2024 20:14

Christ there are some barmy comments on here. It was a rice cake and half of one at that!!

A rice cake? 😂

Unsure which bit you are questioning -

  1. I wouldn't put any rubbish in someone else's bin, including a rice cake
  1. I haven't found a rice cake in my bin so far to be mad about but will let you know if/when it happens and how I feel

As I said, I wouldn't care that much to yell at someone

If it isn't emptied because of it then yes, you care.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 08/11/2024 20:28

Seriously- some of you really have an issue with someone putting half a rice cake in a big bin outside your house? This is so weird to me. A big bag of rubbish would obviously be annoying, but the odd wrapper or whatever? Meh.

Deadringer · 08/11/2024 20:29

If it's in an alleyway she probably gets stuff dumped in her bin all the time. I wouldn't have made a fuss if it was my bin, but I would never put rubbish in someone else's bin, I bring my rubbish home if there are no bins about.

Nine9 · 08/11/2024 20:45

I would have thought you rude and entitled, especially after your reaction, but wouldn't come out my house especially to say something. I also don't see why you couldn't have put it in your pocket until you got home.

ttcat37 · 08/11/2024 20:50

I don’t care if people use my bin, as long as it’s not a bag full. Better in there than on the floor. Carrying rubbish around is a pain with little ones, easier to throw it away. And it’s not like half a rice cake takes up any space.

Arran2024 · 08/11/2024 20:52

Was it a food bin? If not imo you def shouldn't have done it. You are possibly contaminating recycling. But as a matter of principle no, don't use other people's bins. We sometimes get stuff put in our bins and I find it horrible as I have to tip the bin to extract it.

onwardsup4 · 08/11/2024 20:52

@Carrot678 thanks yes do keep me posted

Cherrysoup · 08/11/2024 20:53

She was OTT, imo. Half a bloody rice cake, not a bag of dog shit etc and hardly filling up her bin! Ridiculous.

her bin isn’t not going to be emptied because of a single rice cake. Once there’s another bag on top of it it won’t even be visible for the bin men to reject!

Edited

Some posters are suggesting their bin men wouldn't take the rubbish with a rogue half a rice cake on top. If this is the case I may actually be pretty miffed, with the bell end bin men

Lovelysummerdays · 08/11/2024 20:56

Wigglywoowho · 08/11/2024 16:39

Our bin men wouldn't take our bin if it had a rice cake in it. They a proper jobs worths. Food waste goes in the food waste bin. I would have to fish out the rice cake and I'd be pissed because I don't want to touch someone else's half eaten food. Take your waste home with you.

This is true where I am. They don’t open bin bags but they do open lid and look inside for contaminants.

Depends on your address. It does happen and it sucks

Ohnobackagain · 08/11/2024 21:01

@Honeybuney I think it’s ok to put stuff in a bin in passing if you are sure what goes in what bin (and if impractical to take home) although I’d try not to, but where we are, only non-recyclables and no food go in the black bin. Some local authorities check the bin contents as well. So maybe you messed her bin up.

onwardsup4 · 08/11/2024 19:49

Fucking hell, mightily pissed off really?

Yes. OP was quite clear that SHE wasn't going to retrieve from a bin. So why should I have to do it?

itsalwaysthesame · 08/11/2024 21:33

I'd have left it on the floor for the birds

But it wasn't just a rice cake, it was a sticky germy rice cake according to one ridiculous poster

CharlotteLucas3 · 08/11/2024 21:49

Some people have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin. I’ve noticed it’s common in dementia. I can’t say I notice what’s in my bin.

Newsenmum · 08/11/2024 21:55

Ok you would all have what I’m about to tell you. My mum once found a dead pigeon and put it in the closest bin. 😥

I think people who have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin live in a council area that has an unhealthy attitude to bins!!

my neighbour was fined because someone threw a crisp packet in her recycling bin and therefore contaminated everything.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/11/2024 22:09

I’ll be honest it wouldn’t have even occurred to me to pick it up, if I drop food outdoors I’d just leave it for the birds or other wildlife to eat

NewName24 · 08/11/2024 22:14

I can't believe the split of opinion on here.

You did the sensible and logical thing, popping it in the bin.

Our bin is by the edge of the property / by the pavement and we live on a road with quite a high footfall, so people sometimes put things in our bin. It isn't an issue at all. I'd far rather they did that than left rubbish on the floor.

The woman is clearly a bit bonkers - don't give it any more thought.
