To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 16:29

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

Maybe I live in space. In my area, the bin men would just empty the bin as normal. It was sticky and on top of the bin bag so I’m sure when it’s emptied it will fall out with the rubbish. There would be no reason for her to dig it out either.

If it was on top of the bin bag, you could have easily taken it out without having to 'dig around '

AgnesX · 08/11/2024 18:07

Wow, some of the replies about bins and half a rice cake.

No wonder this country is filthy.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 08/11/2024 18:12

Fuck sake I had to go back and read your opening post because judging by some of these responses anyone would think you had been fly tipping not putting a bit of a rice cake in a bin lol

RaininSummer · 08/11/2024 18:12

First thought is surely it's not a problem but then I thought all my rubbish in bins is bagged so I actually wouldn't be happy about random loose items in there to maybe get stuck and get stinky.

Verbena193 · 08/11/2024 18:12

Our neighbour leaves their bin out on the pavement because they're too lazy to drag it back around onto their property. I put my dog poo bags in it.

YANBU

Jesus, chill out everyone, it’s a sodding rice cake in a bin, but suddenly all hell breaks loose. Your biggest mistake here OP was posting this scenario on mumsnet, I’m actually surprised the owner came out of their house, according to everyone on here nobody even answers their front doors usually!

😬

How embarrassing for that woman to be so upset about something so inconsequential.
Better in the bin than be left on the ground to attract rats.
Don't overthink it. Some people are weird.

How embarrassing for the OP not to take it out when requested (before shouting following OP’s refusal). Just dispose of your litter in a public bin or take it home

Our bin men wouldn't take our bin if it had a rice cake in it. They a proper jobs worths. Food waste goes in the food waste bin. I would have to fish out the rice cake and I'd be pissed because I don't want to touch someone else's half eaten food. Take your waste home with you.

Yeah - same here. Ours put stickers on our ‚regular’ bins saying ‚Please don’t feed me’ to guard against the evils of food waste such as half a rice cake 🤣

MattSmithsBowTie · 08/11/2024 18:46

Half a rice cake is hardly the end of the world, at least it wasn’t a cat you put in her bin!

caramac04 · 08/11/2024 18:50

My area has changed to fortnightly collections and residents who want a bigger bin have been charged £38 for one.
Some families can’t afford that and are trying to make do but are struggling with the smaller bin being emptied every 14 days rather than the previous 7.
I can imagine strangers putting rubbish in their bin would be annoying.

You don’t live in space. People complaining about this are mad.

Balloonhearts · 08/11/2024 19:02

If you did that to my bin, the binmen wouldn't take it. Anything not in a black bag and they refuse it and you were extremely rude to refuse to remove it when asked to. Disgusting example to set for your child.

Createausername1970 · 08/11/2024 19:28

Actually we paid for our Wheely bin, so it is ours, not the Councils. The tiny ones were free, the usual sized ones were £35.

We have to put stuff in black sacks, so I am guessing your half a rice cake would have slid off the bag to the bottom of the bin, requiring me to fish it out later.

I probably wouldn't have had a go as I don't like confrontation, but I would have been mightily pissed off with you

SkylarH · 08/11/2024 19:30

Honestly OP, people are Batshit. What a petty thing to get worked up about and she should be embarrassed at her lack of kindness.

Motomum23 · 08/11/2024 19:32

Do you live somewhere where rubbish goes in black sacks in the bin? If so totally unreasonable to throw anything in on top of a bin bag as it could make the bin dirty. You're not going to scrub manky wet rice cake out the bottom of the bin are you?

SometimesCalmPerson · 08/11/2024 19:37

You were really rude. Nothing goes in my bin unless it’s bagged up to make cleaning it easier. I don’t want anyone loose in it, especially food that’s going to rot.

Pinkelephant66 · 08/11/2024 19:39

😂

I would’ve probs just left on the floor. Some animal would eat it no doubt!

such a weird thing to get upset over. As long as someone isn’t shitting in my bin I couldn’t give a toss

onwardsup4 · 08/11/2024 19:48

Carrot678 · 08/11/2024 16:31

I wouldn't have asked you take it out of my bin but I also wouldn't put my rubbish in a strangers bin. Drives me mad when I see other people's rubbish in ours.

A rice cake? 😂

Fucking hell, mightily pissed off really?

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 19:50

Fish and a rice cake.

MumChp · 08/11/2024 19:58

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 17:01

I was not gonna to go digging in a halfway full bin for a half eaten rice cake. I walked away as I noticed her tone was quite rude and of course then, she became aggressive.

But it's fine that the owner of the bin has to do it for you to get the bin sorted? Great attitude.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 08/11/2024 20:03

It's fine. It's a small thing. Dog poo is different or chucking a whole bag of rubbish in there as it takes up space they turn can't use and dog poo could go everywhere. I'd rather people put it in the bin than littered the street.

Decencydiedtoday · 08/11/2024 20:05

Wouldn't care as long as they use the right bin. Rubbish in my garden bin gives me the rage. They are side by side, against my outside wall so it's really not hard

Newsenmum · 08/11/2024 20:05

Are people seriously concerned about half a rice cake going in their bin? A rice cake? Bloody hell 😂 it’s a bin!

JC03745 · 08/11/2024 20:06

YABU.
The woman just saw you lob something in HER bin! She wouldn't have a clue it was a rice cake, dog shit, used nappy or something else.

Yes- after she had to ask you, you claimed it was a rice cake, but how would she know that was the truth?
You could have left it on the back/bottom of the pram to take home or put in a public bin!
