to think that children in your child's class don't identify as animals?

inspired by the wearing a tail to school thread, I thought I'd see just how common or otherwise the whole furry/litter tray/identify as an animal thing really is.

Unreasonable = Yes, a child in my child's class does this.
Not Unreasonable = Don't be silly, never come across one in my life.

What makes me uncomfortable is the close association that could be made with 'furries' which is a highly sexualised adult fetish that comes along with other paraphilia. I would be keeping a close eye on what the kids are looking at on line.

Yes this. 💯

My 7 year old daughter does this 🤦‍♀️ she says she identifies as a therian. I don't let her wear her tail to school of course. I actually think its very normal for children of this age to pretend to be animals but its the terminology she's picked up around it...

Too much internet

fanaticalfairy · 08/11/2024 16:14

Fluufer · 08/11/2024 16:11

How does your 7 year old even know what a therian is to "identify" as one? Too much unsupervised youtube/tiktok?

Or at school with others that have too much.

BloodyHellBob · 08/11/2024 16:16

As far as I'm aware there are none in my ds school. I certainly wouldn't encourage it, it's fine to "pretend" but "identifying" is a whole other ballgame.

Two self-identified cats at my teacher-friend's (secondary) school. They periodically disrupt the lessons by crawling round and miaowing.

Then they should be sanctioned for disruptive behaviour as per their behaviour policy.

I've looked this up because of this thread. My mind is a bit blown. So it's identifying as an animal, and can include believing you were an animal in a past life.
This isn't play, and shouldn't be supported on this level in school.

Oh dear god. I followed the link. That’s some of the most half-baked crap I have ever read. This stood out:

  • For example, if your theriotype is a parrot, during your shift, you might lose your independent thought and start repeating other people, feel like you have feathers instead of skin, or randomly start visualizing yourself on a subtropical island.

FFS. And this:

  • For example, if you enjoy the beach more than your house, that doesn’t necessarily mean your theriotype is a crab. It could just be a tranquil environment.

No shit, Sherlock.

It must be a spoof. Surely?

isthesolution · 08/11/2024 16:21

I think it's absolutely fine to play games where you pretend to be an animal. Or a police man. Or anything at all. Perfectly normal. A lot of children do it.

Identifying as an animal and having special treatment at school for this is insane and very confusing for children though.

It's really important that children can distinguish fantasy from reality otherwise things like video games become incredibly dangerous.

Also where does this stop? Do you suppose your workplace will just allow you to climb on the desks and meow at people mid meeting?!

No Scottish School is teaching Primary 3 about Therians.

Everything we teach is here:

https://rshp.scot/first-level/

Very transparent to all - teachers, parents, pupils, etc.

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 08/11/2024 16:24

At my daughters high school a girl has "identified" as a fookin moth since at least year 7 (now year 10)
The staff pander to her and the kids roll their eyes and give a wide berth 🙄

merderforlife · 08/11/2024 16:25

A colleagues daughter (upper primary age) wears a tail etc at home.and on weekends but not to school.

I've also seen a child at the beach wearing a tail - his mum was throwing a ball and he was retrieving it like a dog 😂

I wish I could ID as a cat. Specifically my cat who just sleeps all day, is given treats for merely existing and has the whole family wrapped around her little paw.

You can. It won't make any difference though.

Superworm24 · 08/11/2024 16:26

WTF. I missed the other thread. We pretended to be animals when we were kids but it was a game. None of this identifying BS. I got bullied for being poor and not having trainers, now it seems we have swung completely the opposite way.

How does that work? Does she just headbutt a lamp all day?

My DD has one or two in her year they started a campaign for a litter tray in the toilets.

Jeez. That's a step to far. Unless at lunch time they are presented with a tin of whiskas, then see if they really do identify as tiddles

I think the people who are so offended by the word “identifying” should imagine what an 11 year old girl sees as “identifying “ as a cat. It is no different from being a real big fan of Madonna and dressing up like her in the 80’s.

There's a huge difference between "dressing up like ....." and "identifying as..."

One is an understanding of make believe and expression of that understanding while the other is a belief you are that thing and are being that thing.

I've dressed up as a cat many times in m6 life for various reasons as a child and adult. I've never once thought I was identifying as one and being one and could be one if I simply said I was.

I suggest that you look into what lgbtq youth Scotland are coming into schools and teaching (which is not in your link) I think that you'll get a very nasty surprise when you do.
Also if you read the articles I linked to you will find council and government statements defending allowing furries on school

Exactly! Kids don't exist in a vacuum, so no one knows if the poster gives their kid the full keys to the internet, or is Amish level of technology avoidance. One of my kids came home in reception saying how little Jimmy told him about a clown that lives in drains and eats children. He certainly didn't watch It at home.

I think younger kids just enjoy pretend play and cute animals are fun to imitate. Teen girls are probably socially awkward and trying to make sure that people stay away. My version was piercings, bright hair and metal music. Pretty sure 99% of teen boys involved would just be doing it to get away with taking the piss at school.

stargirl1701 · 08/11/2024 16:33

They are not in Primary 3. I guarantee it.

Maybe not in your school yet, but they are in my niece's school! Which BTW is not one of the schools in the articles but is the same council as one of them

These threads today have been the first I've heard about this. It's the terminology and seriousness of it all, wtf 🤦‍♀️

We had "horse girl" at our secondary school, she would gallop around at break time and neigh etc. Obviously people took the piss and teachers told her to pack it in once she was in the building which she did. There was obviously something going on with her poor girl and now I've thought about it I hope she's ok, but "identifying" as anything and pandering to it was just not a thing then, it was just standard issue weird kid behaviour.

AgathaAllAlong · 08/11/2024 16:40

parrotonmyshoulder · 08/11/2024 15:51

Why don’t they ever identify as cows, sparrows, snails, eels, warthogs?
It’s always cats and foxes.

There's a deep psychological reason somewhere. We might as well ask why the gods and spirits of ancient Egypt, Japan, Greek, etc. Mythology are beautiful animals like cats, wolves and foxes, and not ducks.

I think teachers handled this kind of thing better back then. Pity things have changed.
