Paedophile in area what to do

mickey54 · 07/11/2024 20:59

Really don’t know if should do something or not? Local paedophile released from prison early after 2 years. He is on sex offenders register and sexual harm order for life. He lives close to myself. However he now keeps appearing each week same day at the local council building where I work. Here there is a library and kids nursery. Last week the building was evacuated following a fire alarm he came out and was gawping at very young group of school kids virtually on top of them.

aibu to report him, is he meant to be going places where kids are my concern is he might be scoping out the library where the school children visit.
report to building manager. Library ? I feel really bad it’s playing on me and feel like can’t turn blind eye but what’s reasonable and what can you not do ????

Just be careful you don’t start to look like you’re harassing him or stalking him or you’ll be the ones getting in trouble

@BourbonsAreOverated exactly this. Which i don’t want to do

Contact the police on 101. If he has parole conditions restricting his access to the internet then presumably he shouldn't be using the library internet service either. The police can assess the risk based on his convictions and the conditions of his release. If necessary they will contact parole officer and deal with man themselves.

I wouldn't be contacting the nursery. You could end up in bother if nursery staff tell others and a pitchfork mob of angry parents materialises, especially if there is an altercation, things can get right out of hand very quickly. Much as this may be an appealing idea to some it's not ideal. If the nursery need notifying the police will make that decision also.

Unpleasant as the idea of this man even looking at children in a public setting is, it's probably not illegal and shouldn't be a risk - the kids in nurseries are heavily supervised and won't be in a situation where they can be got at by a stranger.

ExtraOnions · 07/11/2024 21:49

OP … how are you aware of all this, but the Police.. who are in the same building, are not?

@ExtraOnions no idea if the police know he is there or not I thought he would report to probation but I really don’t know

@redalex261 good idea as you say the library is full of computers and the internet. Will do 101 and leave it at that I think
otherwise I can end up in bother.

@Moonlightstars I was worried about whether he has confidentiality I know sounds mad but worried I might get in trouble. You never know with stupid laws rules these days.

I hear you, but you can't sit on this information. You are in a position of great responsibility here and if you know this man has form for causing harm to children, and you are seeing him hanging around, watching children on a daily basis, you have to say something to someone. You might get told off if you've obtained this information in a dodgy way, but that is nothing compared to what might happen to a child if he is intending to cause harm.

fdwthuj · 07/11/2024 22:07

I contacted social services about such a man who I felt was "bending" the rules to circumvent restrictions on him that were supposed to protect children.

Social services did act.

mitogoshigg · 07/11/2024 22:09

He's allowed in the library? He also may be reporting to the police.

Hundreds of thousands. There is an epidemic of men consuming child sex abuse images.

You don't get a 4 year jail tariff for just looking at images though surely. Most of those don't get actual jail time. To get 4 years (if he's out "early after 2 it could even have been 5 originally) he must have done something quite bad

WearyAuldWumman · 07/11/2024 22:13

Paedophiles have been banned from our local libraries because some of them are now part of mixed campuses which include schools. For example, the council moved a secondary school, an all-age school for children with learning disabilities, a council office and a library into the one campus.

Nothing. He’s allowed to be out in public. A library isn’t a child only space like a school, so his restrictions won’t prevent him going there. In fact, the convicted abusers I know on sexual harm prevention orders are not prevented from being around children (if you can believe it).

Honestly, I can 100% assure you that one of your colleagues you work with is also a child sexual abuser. It’s incredibly common. There is probably someone in your family. Statistically speaking, it would be unusual if there wasn’t. You just happen to know about this one and be grateful that you do. Obviously if he does anything actually criminal, then report it.

This.

Worried8263839 · 07/11/2024 22:21

I'm a probation officer so reading this thread with interest. Not having unsupervised contact with children is a fairly standard licence condition for those convicted of child sex offences, but with the caveat that it's unavoidable in the course of daily life (such as a fire alarm for example).

Unless the library has any particular links to children, it is highly unlikely he is preventing from going there. As a PP has stated, often they will have restrictions on using personal devices capable of accessing the internet, so the library is a way to do that for many.

Whilst I appreciate it being a concern for you because you know his risk, I'm struggling to see how the library is the concern? Had it not have been for the fire alarm and in turn, him being in close proximity to young children, would you still be concerned? How is it different to him going to a shopping centre or cinema?

MumOfOneAllAlone · 07/11/2024 22:23

Report to as many people as you can, op!

Nextdoor55 · 07/11/2024 22:24

I find these threads scare mongering. I'm in my 50's , when I was young we always had a paedophile in the neighborhood, known by everyone & we just knew (were told) to stay away from them. There was basically one in every community, usually the most upstanding types. We even had a teacher paying kids to wank him off. He was just sent to a mental health facility.

This hasn't changed, you just have to be safe, sensible about everyone. A healthy suspicion.

How is a known paedophile (presumably if you know about him, others in your area do too) managing to just walk around?

Those types wouldn’t last a day where I live, if it was local knowledge that they were a predator. Wouldn’t want it any other way.

Can you link to any evidence of your assertion about prevalence. 100% chance of working with a paedophile? Obviously this cannot be true.

youre right. Your colleagues may be a rare exception unfortunately. But you will probably never know which of them are accessing child abuse images as the police and prisons cannot deal with anything but the most horrific of all the tens of thousands of offenders in every corner of Britain.

Unfortunately paedophiles are everywhere. The ones you are aware of are less of a concern then the others that live in your area that you know nothing about. However a quick call to 101 just to share your concerns won't hurt.
