Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

Chill out guys 🤣🤣🤣

Griff1963 · 12/11/2024 13:39

Good on ya! Have you seen the profits these supermarkets make? Don't blame you in the slightest!

Bonbon21 · 12/11/2024 13:40

Not naughty at all.. just plain theft..
Exactly the same as shoplifting.
You are a thief.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/11/2024 13:42

How many times does someone have to say that losses (due to theft, breakage, spoilage etc) in the supermarkets do NOT come out of their profits - the cost of them is built into the price that you and I are paying, @Griff1963! Are you as happy about theft if you are paying the thieves' bill?

Griff1963 · 12/11/2024 13:43

And you know this how?

Tryingtokeepgoing · 12/11/2024 13:49

Griff1963 · 12/11/2024 13:43

And you know this how?

Perhaps because it’s blindingly obvious to anyone whose worked for a business that aims to make money?

Griff1963 · 12/11/2024 13:51

So if there was no stuff stolen, the prices would fall? Sure they would... NOT!

Jeez admitting you're a scummy thief in public. God help your kids if they are brought up with no sense of right or wrong.

This is shop lifting. Is it worth getting a criminal record for?

Well said.

ANEC · 12/11/2024 14:17

Someone else you knew did it and they never got found out?! Oh well that’s ok then.

You must have also had an idea that they wouldn’t be able to cancel your order on the day it was going to be delivered.
It doesn’t matter how you tell it, You’re a thief.
Absolutely stunned you put this as a AIBU?

hairbearbunches · 12/11/2024 14:19

Well, the foodbank story and the OPs story are living proof that although people are quite happy to believe it's the working class with no morals, it's generally the middle class who behave like scumbags if they think they can get away with it and then turn themselves into pretzels to justify their behaviour.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 12/11/2024 14:23

Griff1963 · 12/11/2024 13:51

So if there was no stuff stolen, the prices would fall? Sure they would... NOT!

Retailers operate on very thin net profit margins and high volume. If a retailer can reduce prices fractionally to gain market share from its competitors it will. And if its costs go up, though theft or NI increases then prices go up. Basic retail economics.

BeNavyCrab · 12/11/2024 14:35

No!! People think that stealing from a faceless company is somehow different than from another person. Imagine if it was someone you know or a family member who had something stolen. It's a different matter unintendedly finding out that you didn't get charged for something or refunded by accident. It's quite different knowingly scheming to try and get something free, but then justify it by saying "If they catch me, I will say it was their fault for delivering it to me and I will pay if I have to". It's not that I've got lots of money or not struggling. I am severely disabled and don't have a house to live in either, but to me morals and fairness is paramount.

BunnyLake · 12/11/2024 14:36

You don’t know how it happened but got the idea from a friend? How does that make sense?

You stole, you know you stole just as if you’d deliberately walked out of a supermarket with a trolley full of unpaid food.

ElaborateCushion · 12/11/2024 15:31

I'm too honest, so no. I'd have to contact them to let them decide what to do about it.

We had a delivery error before where we got our shopping and most of someone else's. I called up to try and get that rectified and was told to just keep it!

I felt bad that someone else wouldn't get their delivery (even though they would either get it eventually, or would get a refund), so I posted on our local FB group, just in case they were on there and we could arrange a handover. They weren't, but in the meantime a young woman messaged me and said she was really struggling at the moment, so if it was going spare she'd be really grateful if she could have it.

It was all fridge stuff, so the local foodback wouldn't take it, and it was more than we could eat or freeze, so I said yes to her and took it to her the next day. She was so grateful that she was almost in tears. What she didn't realise at the moment she accepted the bags was that I'd put a gift card in there too for her.

I'd rather take the opportunity to do something nice, than snaffle it for myself or throw it away.

WildGuide · 12/11/2024 15:44

Yes, I would, because the way these things work means that if you had refused the food it would have been binned, which is wasteful. Once you’re past the point of no return (i.e. the delivery turns up) it’s better that you get the order and use it than it all gets chucked and you have to buy the exact same products again.

I wouldn’t condone doing this deliberately (not suggesting that’s what you did!) but there’s no reason to add food waste into the mix given that you weren’t able to cancel the delivery in time.

Cm1111 · 12/11/2024 15:51

1,000,000 percent this country robs us daily anything you can get for free then take it

JollyZebra · 12/11/2024 16:38

Are you just winding everyone up, here? You cannot be serious putting this up? Stop wasting people's time.

Killjoy124 · 12/11/2024 16:43

Asda, the huge supermarket chain, will not notice this drop in the ocean of profits, take what you can bc you know they're charging above the odds anyway. Don't steal from people of course but this is a minor error on the part of a huge company that will not feel the difference

Downsyndromeadvocate · 12/11/2024 17:34

I'd definitely never do this. I once walked out of tesco with a sack of dog food on trolley that I forgot to pay for. I walked straight back and paid for it. My concience would torture me

Again, another wise, sensible and decent person.

Me too. Even if no one else knew, I’d know. It’s what consciences are for isn’t it!

Vodkamummy · 12/11/2024 19:16

Absolutely not! My conscience wouldn't allow it and I believe very much in karma so would worry that it would eventually catch up with me. Also how could you look that delivery driver in the eye again?
