Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I should add to this that my child is happy healthy and well raised, despite the challenges I've had to deal with 🙄

But do you teach them that stealing is acceptable if they have a "good reason"? Because that is what you advocated. I'm sure criminals think their child is happy, healthy and well-raised - even if they are, it still makes them criminals and their child is very likley to follow their lead in such things.

Matronic6 · 07/11/2024 16:08

Considering the likes of Tesco's profits have gone up to 2.9 billion this year, I am very certain they are robbing customers blind. So no I wouldn't feel bad in this instance.

mogtheexcellent · 07/11/2024 16:08

Probably not for a full delivery.

But I did get an extra pack of Time Outs in yesterdays delivery.

but thats part of capitalism and in no way should justify criminal actions

I don’t believe in karma. Plenty of examples of twats never getting their comeuppance.

The supermarket made the error.

I’ve never once stolen previously so i can’t be that much of a degenerate

You planned this

You're not exactly an angel are you

SuspiciousAloysius · 07/11/2024 16:12

It’s obvious that you more than likely thought this through beforehand, what you would say if you got caught etc.
It reminds me of when young teenagers plan out how they are going to shoplift/ cheat at a test/ lie to their parents.
I'm not the most moralistic person in the world but I can honestly say, no it wouldn’t occur to me to do this because I’m an adult. I might if I was absolutely desperate with kids to feed etc but I would be so ashamed to have to try it. Anyway any supermarket I’ve ever ordered from will only let you cancel til the night before. If you had to contact them to cancel it they would have proof that you knew you’d cancelled it.

I think there's no need to bring my child into a hypothetical debate

Mind your children and ill mind mine

But I think that stealing food in this way from a supermarket, when they treat the poor so badly is fine.

These big companies are shafting people, it's really awful, and no government is willing to stop them. Making record profits while people are struggling is immoral, far more so than a mum stealing basics or getting a free food shop when she could barely sfford it anyway.

295bkq · 07/11/2024 16:14

No, I wouldn't do this. It's not like you ordered 3 tubes of toothpaste and they put 4 in by accident (in which case it'd be fine to keep) - you are literally stealing the entire shop.

But the OP is not a mum on the breadline is she? "I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it."

yes, I would. But Mumsnet constantly reminds me what a god-awful person I am (supposedly). It’s a fucking massive supermarket chain.

Theft no matter how you dress it up. Disgusting.

TinkyBella · 07/11/2024 16:15

It’s called theft.

Oh well I still don't think its a bad as what these companies are doing to innocent people who don't have lots of money

By price gouging and making record profits from this when they know how tough things are for the average person

So you think because the supermarkets make a profit, its ok to steal from them?

And you dont see anything wrong with that at all?

Nothing?

Biffbaff · 07/11/2024 16:17

It's jerks like you that are pushing the prices up for everyone else! You're a bloody wanker for doing that and you know you are. It's disgusting how smug you are about it too. Cretin.

Not a profit

Record profits when people are really struggling

well they do have the basics range (asda) aldi good prices etc and its upto the customer to look for better deals or prices.

Not everyone can get to different shops to do their monthly shop

And everywhere the prices are high and for those struggling the prices are too high

If you don't like their prices, don't buy from them!

Theft isn't the only option.

Disgusting.

in terms of prices asda basic range are quite cheap same with tescos basic range

I don't think theft is the only option

But I don't think someone is bad if they steal. I really don't care. People are struggling really badly. I don't think badly of someone who steals when they're struggling

Just because I don't need to steal (other than claiming back on just eat in the past) doesn't mean I need to judge someone or paint them in a bad light

Matronic6 · 07/11/2024 16:21

PlumViper · 07/11/2024 16:10

Meh, I think their price gouging is as morally reprehensible as stealing and there should be legal ramifications for what these companies are doing.

I personally would never steal from anywhere but this is absolutely not correct. The prices are based on market forces not some benchmark profit target. You can tell this, in fact, because generally supermarket profits are very low as a percentage of revenue because consumers are so price sensitive.

Startinganew32 · 07/11/2024 16:22

Yeah I’d just tell myself that I’d pay when they chase me for it. And then obviously do that if they did chase. But I doubt I’d lose too much sleep over tescos profits tbh
