Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

So you actually cancelled it to deliberately steal? You got the idea of stealing from your friend!

I'm assuming you never do anything 'wrong' then, if you've designated yourself the arbiter of moral correctness. It's tesco, who cares
ETA OP didn't say it was tesco. My assumption, weirdly, from the mention of the app.

Edited

No, I don't regard myself as the arbiter of moral correctness, and 86% of MNers who've voted also think stealing is wrong.

Edenmum2 · 07/11/2024 15:52

Probably not just because I do believe in karma and I wouldn't want that on my shoulders.

Sure. Stealing is wrong. I don’t believe for one second that 86% of you wouldn’t keep that food though.

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2024 15:53

I wouldn't think about doing this myself.....however it probably would be wasted rather than put back on the shelves. I'm surprised you can cancel the same day tbh.

I ordered a lakeland hamper that I was giving as a gift but when it arrived the packaging was damaged. I called to let them know and asked if I could swap for a properly packaged one and they said keep it, and sent another. I think I donated it to a women's refuge.

@TheSerenityPrayer it's not "a reward for your honesty," are you six? It was just more awkward for them to charge you.

No, I'm not 6, but did you mean to be so rude?

I'm just repeating what they said at the time/ how they phrased it.
That isn't what I thought. It was obvious they didn't quite know what to do.

I'd have been happy to bring the item back the next time I was in town (would've been the following week) and have them scan it and charge me, but they said to keep it and think of it as a reward for doing the right thing

We are not just talking about moral correctness (which OP appears to have none of). It is theft, it is breaking the law.

Torontospliffavoider · 07/11/2024 15:55

This is why we can’t have nice things

StandingSideBySide · 07/11/2024 15:55

Can’t believe 15% on this thread are fine with stealing !!

Darebat · 07/11/2024 15:56

Absolutely not

Mhm. I’m sure the CPS would consider it in the public interest to prosecute Op for the supermarket’s mistake

You're right to a degree, people that steal stuff probably lie as well

GoldenPheasant · 07/11/2024 15:57

People like you are the reason prices are kept high for everyone else.

@MumOfOneAllAlone Just think of how many elderly and disabled people are paying higher prices as they can't get to the shop. Disgusting.

As an elderly and disabled person (and who has supermarket deliveries) using me and people like me as a justification for theft is unacceptable. As an elderly and disabled person, I was taught better than to steal as well. I realise that this is an old-fashioned concept these days, but honesty is something to to be desired. If your user name is anything toi go by, I hope that you are teaching your child better than this.

I should add to this that my child is happy healthy and well raised, despite the challenges I've had to deal with 🙄

Grumpy12345 · 07/11/2024 15:58

If you didn’t accept the delivery then I doubt they’d take it back to the shop and put it back on the shelves to sell. I expect they’d just bin it. So no I don’t think you’ve done anything wrong really. It’s not like you did it on purpose.

OneTC · 07/11/2024 15:58

Torontospliffavoider · 07/11/2024 15:55

This is why we can’t have nice things

But the fact that we can and many of us do, is proof that not everyone steals at any given opportunity, otherwise we'd all have everything or nothing

HonoraBridge · 07/11/2024 15:59

No. That is criminal conduct. Stop!

Torontospliffavoider · 07/11/2024 16:03

Sorry, @stilleasy It’s just a silly phrase.

“Expressing reproach when somebody harms or damages something”

Sorry, I’m just disappointed with the OPs behaviour especially when supermarkets are raising prices. Theft is a huge problem right now. I just wish people were better behaved!

OutbackQueen · 07/11/2024 16:03

No, it’s dishonest. And I’d be ashamed to tell people about it on a public forum. But I suppose you’re hoping we’d say it was ok…

Butterworths · 07/11/2024 16:04

GoldenPheasant · 07/11/2024 15:57

It really isn't. The supermarkets price what the market will bear - there isn't a fixed amount of profit then they set the prices to make that happen.

EmmaMaria · 07/11/2024 16:04

femfemlicious · 07/11/2024 15:45

I agree, they take the payment from the card when they pick the items. No way to not pay

I don't. I am charged when the delivery is made.

MoonWoman69 · 07/11/2024 16:04

Oh and -

i don’t know how it happened.

But

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea)

So you knew exactly what you were doing. Don't make out you were holier than thou.
You ought to be ashamed of yourself, but sadly, you won't be.

PlumViper · 07/11/2024 16:07

@Ponter no not worth the risk or the potential risks from it,

if i was to law break then id want to make the history books.

plus you say you did not need some of the order but then say "needed majority of the groceries ordered"

so why cancel to begin with ?

Cerealkiller4U · 07/11/2024 16:07

ohyesido · 07/11/2024 13:50

I'm a firm believer in "what you send out you get back times 3" so if I were you I'd get on the blower very quickly and pay the bill

This

very very true
