To think this is going too far now? (Trump)

That a supposed Christian democrat friend hopes there's another assassination attempt on him soon? I know he can be hated but to wish death on someone is just well... going too far?

Dear me, stop feeding into the drama with these endless bullshit posts ( not you personally op, mumsnet as a whole). I live in the US and I've seen more hand wringing, we're terrified posts on this site than any of my local sites. We had a democratic election, Trump won. Everything is OK and will be OK. The sky is not falling in. The world isn't ending. Go about your lives and stop perpetuating this nonsense.

Absolutely this.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/11/2024 16:17

YANBU. If it was him saying that he’d be hauled over the coals.

A completely fair point that I agree with.

Menopausalsourpuss · 07/11/2024 16:21

Thanks @Cowboycorgi I think it's our terrible media that leads to all this hysteria. Alot of people in the UK get all their info from "the telly" and gullibly believe everything they're told and don't do their own research (even when they've got loads of time on their hands as I learnt during Covid).

ThatsNotMyTeen · 07/11/2024 16:24

I’d be quite pleased if he died, not too fussed in how it came about. Shit happens and plenty of people are killed and we all die, he’s already had a good innings.

CharSiu · 07/11/2024 16:25

He was democratically elected, what is the alternative? an unelected dictator or an election where there is one candidate because that is what some of the world has to live with.

GotToLeave · 07/11/2024 16:26

I rarely wish any that anyone would die but him and Putin I can get behind spending a little bit of my mental energy wishing them dead. It’s not political. Any other republican I wouldn’t feel this way. If Putin hadn’t invaded Ukraine I wouldn’t feel this way. But had I been around in WWII I’d have wished for Hitler to die too. It’s no different.

GotToLeave · 07/11/2024 16:31

If you look back at what Hitler did, Trump has done similar. He’s even talked about Hitler doing some good and wanting generals like Hitler. He incited the storming of a government building leading to deaths, he’s boasted about sexual assault, he didn’t pay any attention to democratic principles and has threatened them, he’s a convicted felon who lies and is clearly in it for his own ego, not in service to people and country. And he’s unhinged. It is frightening that a man like that has so much power. Women in particular should be very afraid.

Much as i loathe the man, he didn't elect himself. The problem isn't one man. He is a symptom of the problem.

This
There's 73,000,000 Americans who actively wanted him to be president and only 68,000,000 who didn't. So they've got their president, democratically elected. This is the country they have built and getting rid of the pustule at the top does not do anything about the other 73,000,000 who think that way.

There's also the 22,000,000 who were registered to vote but didn't do so and the approx 45,000,000 who are adults of voting age who didn't register to vote.

Assassination is never a good way to change the direction of a country. The figurehead at the top is a symptom not a cause.

54% of Americans have a maximum reading age of a 6th grader. I'd rather pay attention to the warnings of his former staff and generals than the complacency of a disinterested population.

We had the same thing with Brexit, "it'll be OK the government aren't going to roll back on our rights and protections". Cue attacks on worker's rights, the right to protest, the independence of the judiciary, environmental standards etc.

It's the same network of people backing both movements, with the same long term aims, and they're not manoeuvring in the interests of the general population.

I'd much rather see Trump in jail than shot though.

Feelingstrange2 · 07/11/2024 16:35

I sort of pleased he won by a landslide (in US terms). He is where he is, democratically elected, so let's suck it up. At least there's no arguments as to whether he should be in that position whether we like.it or not.

He may be a target but those that follow could be far worse. As others have said he likes golf too much, so hopefully he will.let others make the hard decisions and just get on with keeping his handicap down whilst avoiding a prison term.

wickerlady · 07/11/2024 16:41

Yes and they view themselves as 'good people'.

Self elected guardians of the moral high ground, or so they think they are, but then would marvel in something so awful as this.

Pathetic really, and anti-democracy - does it get worse?

I know exactly what you mean.
Much as I despise the man and everything he stands for, I totally agree with you and said almost exactly the same thing to my OH this morning.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/11/2024 16:52

Of course that kind of statement has no place in any democracy. It's totally unacceptable for people to say stuff like this, even if they're supposedly joking - you never know if some other stupid fucker will decide to act on it.

I find Trump's views abhorrent and I think he is a deeply unpleasant and dangerous man. However, I would not wish violence on him under any circumstances.

I expect the Ukrainians do. Can't blame them to be honest. Whilst it's certainly a bad thing to wish death upon someone, it's a natural enough reaction when facing the possibility of war, misery or great suffering. Nobody knows what will happen in Europe now that Putin will be able to run amok thanks to his little orange piggy across the water. Not to mention the ongoing carnage in the middle east.

I hope not one American dollar nor one American life gets spent on Ukraine. Why do you want America to get involved so badly? It’s on your continent, you do something if it’s so important. It’s been how many years since WW2? Take care of your own security, NATO is only a venue for America to assert influence in Europe, don’t you want a bit of independence?

Topseyt123 · 07/11/2024 17:05

I dislike Trump but I wouldn't wish assassination on anyone.

If Trump stops giving away our secrets to Russia and you stop using our territories around the globe as bases for your troops and weapons then we have a deal.

What are you going to do when the world's reserve currency is no longer the dollar though? That's quite some debt Trump's run up and he is only going to pile on more.

kittybiscuits · 07/11/2024 17:22

Are we definitely sure there have been ANY assassination attempts and not just more Trump fuckwittery?

Cowboycorgi · 07/11/2024 17:36

@MonkeyToHeaven -.OK, ignoring the thinly veiled 'Americans are stupid 'part of your post. My lived experience is that Americans are either complacent or disinterested quite the opposite. Your average American is a hard working person who wants to make sure they can feed their kids, pay their bills and.be rewarded for hard work. Trumpnas won, enough with the division. What we need to do now is get behind him & support so he can have the best presidency. That benefits us all. We live in a country with some of best rights and freedoms in the world. One man cannot change the constitution.

tbf, he could lessen the chances of that himself by restricting gun ownership.

Really? How exactly because Biden and Obama did not do it. Democrats are in power for four years now? Obama was for eight? Why is up to Trump?

No, but it looks like he's going to get away with all the legal challenges and court cases against him - and one of the first steps in the 2025 project is to bring the FBI and the DOJ fully under the control of the Executive branch which would mean Trump using them to prosecute any one he wants and give a pass to anyone he chooses.

He can also do extreme harm using executive orders to exploit the national parks, stifle research by the NOAA into the effects of climate change and stack the courts with right wing Christian theologist judges which will affect the courts for decades to come.

I am a dual citizen and I don't think Americans are stupid, I lived in Huntsville, Alabama which has the highest number of PhDs per capita in the US due to the aerospace industry, NASA, and Redstone Arsenal so I met plenty of actual rocket scientists. I remember a case where the Mobile shipyards were using a particular tool in a way it was not designed for leading to the loss of fingers and hands. There was a call for OSHA to get involved on AL.com the local news site. The number of posts from Alabamians complaining that people should just be more careful and that OSHA should stay out of it was ridiculous. It was like working in dangerous conditions was somehow more admirable because there would be less government involvement.

I don't know if it is just a lack of awareness of how dangerous working conditions can get without EPA, OSHA, and the rest of the Federal alphabet or people just don't really want to be a UNITED states bur rather some kind of loosely allied gathering of states. I suspect the latter, and Trump eradicating EPA, Department of Education, and I don't know what else probably appeals to that mindset. It's similar to the Brexit mindset.
