To think shrinkflation is getting out of control?

I’m sick of buying toothpaste in a huge box only to find that it’s a small tube 75ml. Even the ones that promise “25% extra free” are only 100ml which is what the standard size was a couple of years ago, so you’re not actually technically getting anything free!

Toilet rolls have shrunk and the quality is crap… excuse the pun.

I had a Magnum ice cream for the first time in a while and I honestly thought it was a mini sized one. They used to have 4 in a pack and now they only have 3.

Don’t even get me started on a Toblerone!

AIBU to despise the dishonesty of brands way more than the actual price inflation? Prices have risen but just be honest about what you’re selling (or not selling!) to us.

What's so hard about offering the standard size at a higher price and a smaller one at the 'normal' price 🙄🙄

Completely agree op, it pisses me off. Have you seen the wagon wheels now?!

It would be completely impractical for brands to offer lots of different sizes. There would be significant costs involved, and they would be passed on.
Plus the supermarkets don't have space to list different pack sizes of the same product/brand. Space is at a premium as it is.

I'm not saying it's not frustrating when the size changes, but offering both the old size and the new one is never going to happen.

Changingplace · 06/11/2024 21:55

I totally agree on toothpaste, half the time now I can’t even find the bigger tubes you’d get as standard size, they’re all smaller and cost £££ 😤

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 06/11/2024 21:58

It's worse when they increase the price AND shrink the product. Quality Street tubs I am looking at YOU. Special mention for the purple one.

I don't think it would tbh, especially brands that have only one product, ie Toblerone or wagon wheels

They'd just need to make a smaller number of the more expensive product, particularly at Christmas, and say 'limited edition traditional size'

I disagree on that one. If you look up the old 80s Christmas Quality Street tubs they were the equivalent of just over £20 today. Yes they were bigger but they cost twice as much.

GoodVibesHere · 06/11/2024 22:04

It goes against green initiatives too as it's a lot of wrapping for just a tiny item, so.aurely it's creatimg additional wrapping? Because you now need two chocolate bars to equal a decent enough size to actually satisfy.

'Fun size' chocolates eg. Twix now seem to be basically one bite.

ZippyDoodle · 06/11/2024 22:19

There's no need to do this. They could just put the price up and be honest but they're banking on the general public not noticing. I just boycott brands that do this because I cannot be bothered with all of the mental fannying about to work out if the packet is smaller every single time I shop.

I buy a lot of Waitrose own brand stuff and it's all decent quality. Very little shrinkflation to my knowledge except for toilet roll recently which everyone noticed.

Check the price per ml or kg. It's much easier.

Beekeepingmum · 06/11/2024 22:21

Products get smaller but people get larger so they must be just buying more which kind of shows that they would have paid the higher price for the same thing anyway.

BeMintBee · 06/11/2024 22:24

The depth of an Aldi Racer bar (snickers rip off) has literally halved recently! To add insult to injury they have attempted to disguise this by making the wrapper longer.

Circumferences · 06/11/2024 22:28

What I'm about to say is not on many people's radar WRT "shrinkflation" because technically, it's not a "shrink".... But once you notice it you can't unnotice it.

Fresh veg like Celery, leek, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, etc, in all major supermarket chains has gone dirty.

The "fresh" veg is FILTHY. You used to be able to buy a few leeks or whatever without soil covering the packaging.

And it's more expensive too.

This extreme capitalism corporate greed crisis is hitting us in more ways than one.

BeMintBee · 06/11/2024 22:31

I wonder how long it will be before they have to shrink fish fingers. Had to wrestle DH to keep them in the online basket once he spotted that a box was £8! Vaguely remember when fish fingers and Heinz beans was a budget meal.

SpilltheTea · 06/11/2024 22:36

It's the worst crime of the cost of living crisis. The corporate overlords couldn't even let us peasants keep our chocolate.

Pusheen467 · 06/11/2024 22:41

It's the Aldi (the Plenty ripoff one) that gives me the rage. They doubled the price and halfed the thickness. Fucking thieving cunts.

They wouldn't need loads of sizes, though - just the 'new' size and the proper one.

Kit Kat seem to manage offering many different flavours, bar sizes and pack sizes - with a 7-pack and a 14-pack (used to be 8 and 16) frequently bizarrely costing the exact same price.

The only reason they don't is that it would give their game away and make it blatantly clear what trick they were banking on.

GoodVibesHere · 06/11/2024 22:45

They really do think we're too dumb to notice.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 06/11/2024 22:46

Lidl basic toilet rolls used to be great value, but now they made them thinner and rougher, without any warning at all.

It might just be us, but we've now switched to Asda ones, so that worked well for their profits if there are loads of previously-happy regular customers like us.

If I wanted to use Bronco or Izal bog roll, I would get in my time machine and travel back 40 years to my primary school!!

They also tend to use cheaper fish than cod as standard now, too.

Not sure if that's just reductions in international cod stocks, or if there's also an element of increasing profits for them too?

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 06/11/2024 22:53

We should take a leaf out of the French legal system and force suppliers and retailers to show clear, prominent signs to effectively rumble themselves every time they try to hoodwink their customers by pulling this trick.

username7891 · 06/11/2024 22:54

It's not just shrinking products, they also change the ingredients and they are worse quality.

The same has happened with clothes, they're all synthetic materials, shoddily made for premium prices.

We're getting completely ripped off.

But offering the 'old' and the 'new' size still takes up twice as much space on the shelf as just either the old or the new. No retailer is going to list a 14 count and 16 count pack of Kit Kats - it doesn't make commercial sense.

And Nestle would have to alter their production line to do counts of both 14 and 16. And have 2 sets of packaging, and 2 different sizes of boxes to ship out to retailers, and all the systems set up to manage orders and supply chain for 2 different sizes. It just wouldn't work. And it would cost money - and guess where that gets accounted for... in the price on the shelf.

StormingNorman · 06/11/2024 23:29

Absolutely. Have you seen the bags of Monster Munch in a multipack lately. Tiny.

Heresoneimadearlier · 06/11/2024 23:37

I had a two finger twin the other day, it actually made me laugh it was so tiny.
