To think shrinkflation is getting out of control?

I’m sick of buying toothpaste in a huge box only to find that it’s a small tube 75ml. Even the ones that promise “25% extra free” are only 100ml which is what the standard size was a couple of years ago, so you’re not actually technically getting anything free!

Toilet rolls have shrunk and the quality is crap… excuse the pun.

I had a Magnum ice cream for the first time in a while and I honestly thought it was a mini sized one. They used to have 4 in a pack and now they only have 3.

Don’t even get me started on a Toblerone!

AIBU to despise the dishonesty of brands way more than the actual price inflation? Prices have risen but just be honest about what you’re selling (or not selling!) to us.

I agree that we need some proper legislation in place to help educate people.

It’s only a matter of time before they start doing it to milk and eggs.

What annoys me with things like toothpaste is that I will still use the same quantity as I always did. I haven't reduced the size of the blob I put on my toothbrush. By giving me a 75ml tube, you are not changing the amount I use, just increasing the number of tubes I get through during the year which means more packaging which is damaging for the environment and must further push the prices up as I am having to buy 8 tubes to get 600ml of toothpaste rather than 6. Just give me a 100ml tube and make me pay more for it. This would also mean I'm not routinely running out of toothpaste as my brain hasn't caught up with the smaller tube yet and so somehow doesn't seem to notice until the last possible moment that it is about to run out as it is still thinking that a tube should last longer than that,

Agreed!

Also, the quality of toothpaste has got worse. More often than not it’s a horrible blue jelly type substance rather than a thick, white paste. It’s difficult to know on the pack which one it’s going to be until I bring it home and am sorely disappointed!

I know this isn’t very seasonal but we got some fab ice lollies and they are the same height and width but half the depth!

OAPapparently · 07/11/2024 05:37

Multipacks of crisps annoy me. They are ridiculously expensive and the amount of bags you get now don’t last a family a week.
Walkers crisps. I only buy them when they are on offer now.
I bought a 4 bar multipack of Double Decker bars recently too and they were tiny, and Mars & snickers the same. They are like the old snack size bars.

And everything seems to come in a 3 pack these days, which means most families have to buy 2 lots so everyone can have one.

Thereshegoesagain · 07/11/2024 05:51

Wait till you try and find bags of chocolate coins for Christmas.
I get mine early for our 'fill your own' advent calendar.
Tesco bags are still a pound and I think there were about 6 coins in there.
Got fairly big bags from B and M in the end.
So frustrating.

Mishmashs · 07/11/2024 06:06

The butter one wound me up. Butter has always been in 250g packs. Now some of them are 200g. Sneaky. And also the go ahead Apple biscuits packs (the three biscuits together) were always in packs of 5, now in packs of 4.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 07/11/2024 06:12

I thought I was tripping when I looked at my box of Ritz crackers yesterday! It was tiny. Or was my hand extra big? I had a moment of self doubt.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 07/11/2024 00:40

I stopped buying anchor butter for this reason. It’s sneaky. If they increased the pack size it would say on the pack but not the other way round.

I put a 250g block of butter next to the shrunken anchor packs so other shoppers would see.

I love that you did this with the butter! 😂 You're right. They do boast when it goes up but keep quiet when they’re fleecing us.

I noticed this too. Plus when you slice veg open, far more likely to be, well, decomposed these days.
I have had bad onions repeatedly from Sainsbury's and am fed up about it to the extent that I'm now going to return them!

So recognisable. Just last week: From one big name supermarket two packages of in-date tomatoes for a planned full English. Both had rotting ones in. Few days later opened a broccoli from Lidl, bought day before. Had to slice away half of the top as rotting. That was supposed to be used for broccoli and cheese soup.

Tired of rotting veg for which I have paid full price. Also because we live in the middle of nowhere, so I cannot just nip out to replace something as a supermarket trip is a 40 minute round-trip, just in driving, so we tend to meal plan and do a weekly shop for that reason.

If something that is supposed to be in date and has been properly stored/refrigerated turns out rotten, it can mess up the whole meal and cost much more than just the spoiled ingredient's cost, depending on what you were planning to use it for, how easily you can replace it, etc. (And we are confident cooks who usually can improvise and make it work.)

CuriousGeorge80 · 07/11/2024 03:08

I hate it, but all the consumer research shows people would actually rather pay the same for smaller than more for the same size.

I wonder how they ask the question and whether they manipulate it at all?

If they were so confident that people definitely wanted to keep the price the same, even if that means getting a lot less for it, surely they would proudly boast about it on the packaging!

SadSadGirl · 07/11/2024 06:52

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 06/11/2024 23:43

But loads of things come in different size options -- often with not all that much difference between the sizes - always the same brand and variety.

Off the top of my head, peanut butter jars, cereals, many chocolate brands, toilet rolls...

Marmite!

KimberleyClark · 07/11/2024 06:52

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 06/11/2024 22:02

I disagree on that one. If you look up the old 80s Christmas Quality Street tubs they were the equivalent of just over £20 today. Yes they were bigger but they cost twice as much.

And they came in a tin rather than a plastic tub too.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 07/11/2024 06:53

It's ridiculous with fruit and veg too, where they come up with silly codes rather than clearly telling you the date - when it was picked, displayed or is best before - and they keep changing their 'codes' to try to keep confusing you.

They insult our intelligence too, by claiming that it's to 'help avoid waste' - as though we will ignore the evidence of our own eyes and won't bin rotten food anymore if we can't make out the actual date on it.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 07/11/2024 06:53

Also clothes sizes seemed to have shrunk in some shops in their attempt to save fabric - either that or I've got fatter!

User123456713 · 07/11/2024 06:55

We all celebrate when Tesco etc announce £2.5billion in profits without actually thinking how they got them.

We call the Americans stupid but price inflation was a thing for them, it doesn't seem to bother us lot.

B&M ground coffee, went from 250g to 200g but the price went up 50p.......

Eurgh, who celebrates Tesco's profits?!

Barney16 · 07/11/2024 06:56

I feel I need to say only one thing. Twix. If twix get any smaller they will have to rename them Tw.

EspanaPorfavor · 07/11/2024 06:57

to some extent I don’t mind it, I’m a snacker who keeps going until the packet it empty, so a smaller mars bar saves me from myself! multipacks that have gone from 6 to 5 (or magnums from 4 to 3) are handy for a family with 3dc.

toothpaste, loo roll, the con artistry in packaging however, that angers me. The biscuit trays with an empty raised bit in the middle…

I think I need to look at my self-discipline!

I'm stuck with Anchor butter unfortunately because my ASD daughter won't eat anything else.😔

AlecTrevelyan006 · 07/11/2024 06:59

Freddos have definitely gotten smaller :(

WaneyEdge · 07/11/2024 07:03

Went to John Lewis the other day as they have a pick and mix Quality Street stand. Got my strawberry creams and purple ones for DH. Purple ones are tiny. Both tasted terrible, I think it’s the new paper wrapper.

I bought some (much more expensive) chocolate from a nice shop on a day out the other day and will probably bin the QS. Such a waste but just don’t taste the same now ☹️

SnobblyBobbly · 07/11/2024 07:14

Oh this is bugging me so much lately!

'Baking' potatoes which used to be much larger than average are now one step up from a new potato!

I saw Poppadoms the other day which were tiny - the size of a tea coaster. It's such a joke.

Although what's also a joke is that somehow even though the food is shrinking, I'm getting fatter 😆

So there's not even a silver lining!

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 07/11/2024 07:14

I do get annoyed by this but also by cafes charging you the same amount for what used to be a medium coffee but they now call it a large

One cafe is now just a generous gulp !

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 07/11/2024 07:16

I order online but I don't put baking potatoes or peppers on the list as they are tiny!
