22 Month old screaming and crying uncontrollably for unknown reason

Tried everything, took him to a and e but they couldn't find anything wrong. No ear infection, recovering from chesty cough which started last week Wednesday. Got better by Sunday and returned to nursery on Monday. Had a good day but refused to eat. Got home and did an unusual poo. Bathed him and within 10 mins cried hysterically from 8 until midnight tugging his ear and tensing his body. Anyway today he's abit better but still cried and clingling onto me more than usual. Gave him Calpol to ease any pain and Gripe water. Noticed he burped a few times. Got slightly back to himself again and was playing then ate fruit pouch and and jam sandwich for lunch. Started crying and moving around like he's uncomfortable again and the crying began again. Gave him milk and now back to sleep.

Any ideas of what this could be... Im so worried and anxious. Trying to keep it together.

Is he constipated?

Stormyweatheroutthere · 05/11/2024 17:29

Back teeth?

GreenFlamingo11 · 05/11/2024 17:29

Maybe an ear infection has developed by now if he's still tuggung his ear? I'd get it looked at again

rainbow616 · 05/11/2024 17:33

Tugging of ears is usually an ear infection/teething/tiredness. However, me and my little girl had this awful virus last week that's been doing the rounds and I had the most horrendous bloating with it. I've heard loads of people have been suffering with stomach issues alongside cold/flu symptoms. Have you tried bicycle legs and more gripe water? Sounds like that helped. Any temperature? I would be tempted to keep off the fruit and anything that might worsen bloating for the minute. If there's no improvement I would go back to the dr x

Is he constipated?

Not at the moment as he did a poo yesterday which was softer than usual.

Back teeth?

I was thinking this also but I just wasn't sure.

Same I'm also having a bad chesty cough. I'll try bicycle legs and less fruit. I may check with Dr again tomorrow to properly rule out ear infection. He's sleeping fine also and so I thought it might not be. I'm just unsure sigh maybe teething as you said or cold with stomach issues.

Teething?

Goldengirl123 · 05/11/2024 17:42

Why don’t you just book a doctors appt?

Anything like my doctors and it'll be 2 weeks even for a baby😒

Pancaked · 05/11/2024 18:00

My son at that age got ear pain/infections when teething...he used to suddenly erupt into really awful high pitched inconsolable screaming. Not much I could do beyond calpol. It was really distressing though!

AgainandagainandagainSS · 05/11/2024 18:10

Does he have no words yet OP? At almost 2, can he not communicate to you at all, or point where it hurts? Say owww etc? It sounds like it's his ear bothering him. Even if there's no infection, he may have inflammation after a cough virus. Poor lad.

I've been trying to and they keep telling me fully booked try again 8am or 1pm and I've been doing this for a week. Very frustrating

Provide real homemade food not pouches, avoid the processed rubbish. Ensure they r drinking plenty of water not squash.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 05/11/2024 18:27

The doctors should see a baby. Especially one that is distressed. I would specifically tell them that. The 2 week wait is for veruccas or skin conditions not crying babies. That is terrible that they can't prioritise you.

tigerlily9 · 05/11/2024 18:34

GPs should offer same / next day appointments for urgent care and children should be a priority. I would try the GP.
As its evening if he has a temperature or is not well you should call 111 and they will advise - either A&E, GP call ( this can be same night but anytime) or book into GP /call GP. It does mean sitting on hold for long time. The return call may be hours later when you are asleep.

That’s why better to get same day GP appt in daytime if you can.
also check temp BEFORE you give calpol as after may be low due to medication.

MatildaTheCat · 05/11/2024 18:51

Dose him up because if he’s in pain he’s in pain. Use some teething gel just in case it’s his teeth and cuddle him with a warm hot water bottle on his tummy in case it’s abdominal pain. Could try the hottie on his ear too. I’d avoid a lot of milk or juice and stick to plain stuff.

fingers crossed for him to feel better very soon.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 05/11/2024 18:56

I'd try alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen to cover both bases. If he's pulling at his ear it could well be an infection or pain in there. I once took a child to a gp for a suspected ear infection in a morning, gp said all was well. That afternoon his ear just leaked an unbelievable amount of pus all down the side of his face. Just because it's not apparent at a time doesn't mean there isn't something going on there.

I did and they said there's nothing that they can do. I literally called my gp twice today as instructed for urgent care and they said sorry no appointments. Try again Tomorrow.

Allergy/ stomach virus? Tugging ear can also he self soothing.

Newsenmum · 05/11/2024 20:23

I’m so sorry btw. This sounds so stressful. Poor you and your poor little one. You’re doing a great job.

Arglefraster · 05/11/2024 20:38

Can you try your health visitor? IME they can magically open doors to GPs if needed.

Hope he's better tomorrow & you don't need to.

Get a second opinion about the ears.
