22 Month old screaming and crying uncontrollably for unknown reason

Tried everything, took him to a and e but they couldn't find anything wrong. No ear infection, recovering from chesty cough which started last week Wednesday. Got better by Sunday and returned to nursery on Monday. Had a good day but refused to eat. Got home and did an unusual poo. Bathed him and within 10 mins cried hysterically from 8 until midnight tugging his ear and tensing his body. Anyway today he's abit better but still cried and clingling onto me more than usual. Gave him Calpol to ease any pain and Gripe water. Noticed he burped a few times. Got slightly back to himself again and was playing then ate fruit pouch and and jam sandwich for lunch. Started crying and moving around like he's uncomfortable again and the crying began again. Gave him milk and now back to sleep.

Any ideas of what this could be... Im so worried and anxious. Trying to keep it together.

I'd try alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen to cover both bases. If he's pulling at his ear it could well be an infection or pain in there. I once took a child to a gp for a suspected ear infection in a morning, gp said all was well. That afternoon his ear just leaked an unbelievable amount of pus all down the side of his face. Just because it's not apparent at a time doesn't mean there isn't something going on there.

This is unlikely, but check his testicles in case it's a testicular torsion (one of them would look red and swollen). It's rare, but needs treating immediately.

I'll try this now thanks so much ❤️

Don't put a water bottle on a child. They regularly burst or leak they're so dangerous .

violetcuriosity · 05/11/2024 21:14

Maybe worms? That's the only thing that's made mine scream in the evenings.

Singleandproud · 05/11/2024 21:20

Don't use pouches, or at least cut them open, it's far better to use containers you can see into like jars if you need to use prepared food..
There were several cases of Children getting ill as the pouches weren't being pasteurised properly and parents didn't know as they feed the baby directly and only when their child was fussing and they cut the pouch open did they see it was full of mould.

Your babies current problems sound like it's teething related which is likely to cause ear pain and gastro issues.

Ear infection or back teeth coming in

rainbow616 · 06/11/2024 20:35

@mumoftwo0105 how is he today OP?

Serene135 · 06/11/2024 20:42

I don’t want to be unkind OP but you are not being assertive enough. There is clearly something wrong (possibly ear infection) and you are not demanding to be seen. You need to phone the doctor and if the appointments are gone then ask to see the emergency doctor. Keep asking and giving reasons why! If that fails phone the out-of-hours service to see a GP or take your child back to A&E. Sometimes you need a second opinion before the antibiotics are given. Your child doesn’t have a voice; you have to be his voice to get him the appointment.

I've called 111 again and they said to call my gp today at 8am and once again no appointments so they've arranged for a doctor to call me instead so I'm now waiting as he's developed a fever and is vomiting his milk. I'll keep persisting until he's seen. Thank you so much

Oh bless him, that sounds awful. I honestly can't believe they won't give him an appointment!

Why can’t you take him back to the hospital? You could be waiting hours for a phone call and it might end up being just a phone call (no physical
appointment). You need to take him back to the hospital so he can be seen today.

We managed to get an appointment for 3pm with the doctor thankfully.

Let us know how it goes - sounds very much like an ear infection to me. Don't leave without antibiotics- it's been long enough now that if they don't attack it ASAP with antibiotics he could be open to some hearing loss. Don't let it lie - I'd also complain they haven't seen him sooner.

Antibiotics are not necessary for ear infections as usually viral, even if it perforates. You won’t get hearing loss. Glue ear is temporary. The important thing is that he is checked out. I would rely on my GP who has seen your child rather than the internet, But you should tell your GP how hard it was to get an appointment.

Matronic6 · 07/11/2024 22:34

DD went through this around same age. Was convinced it was an ear infection but was actually teething. Nurofen and calgel helped but the back teeth coming out was pretty rough.

But do go back to GP if you are worried. But when I think about it I had an ear infection when I was about 15 and the pain was awful, I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't focus, couldn't interact. Painkillers didn't work as they don't fight the infection. So the fact he is having good days and times and responding to painkillers makes me very hopeful that it is not an ear infection.

LavenderFields7 · 07/11/2024 22:55

Bit random but he hasn’t swallowed anything like a small battery? I read a newspaper article yesterday about a baby screaming and they couldn’t work out why until they discovered he had swallowed the battery from his grandfathers hearing aid.

mumoftwo0105 · 08/11/2024 01:30

Update: so we were in hospital and they did blood tests, urine test and chest x ray and found that he had a throat infection. So they gave us penicillin antibiotics and did obs all throughout to monitor to him. They discovered he had tachycardia also due to fever. He is also teething at the same time so thankfully he's now better and back to himself again as they gave him Meds to calm his temp down.

Teething…

penguinbiscuits · 08/11/2024 03:49

JUST had the same with my 24 months old.
It was tonsillitis. Just like in your case. Please beware that after a round of antibiotics, as a result of a sore throat, my little one developed an ear infection.

It's quite common to develop an ear infection after throat illness. So if he not getting better after antibiotics, best that in mind. 🌺

rainbow616 · 08/11/2024 06:52

Aww such a shame. Hope he starts to feel better soon x
