Do you bath your kids everyday?

How often do your children have a bath -
aged 7 and 9.

Surely it cannot be everyday?? Or am I being thick.

No because she will only get in with me and I don't want a bath everyday.

FlipFlopVibe · 05/11/2024 15:47

1 and 5 year old - every other day baths here as the toddler gets a good clean with nappy changes and cloths after meals and 5 year old doesn't need to worry about body smells yet. I'd guess around the time they start secondary school is when they will move to daily showers

you're damaging their skin if you bath/ shower every day.

Surely it depends on what you wash them with?

Frosty1000 · 05/11/2024 16:25

I have a 9 year old and he has a quick under 4 minute shower most nights - no dry skin at all.

I’m a primary school teacher and some of the replies explain why some of the kids tend to be a bit smelly by the end of the week.

I would've thought that's more due to the price of uniform and it being worn a few times before it's washed at the weekend.

YouLookinSusBro · 05/11/2024 17:08

Long bath twice a week for 6yo DS, unless particularly dirty. Hair washed once a fortnight. No he doesn't smell and doesn't look dirty, obviously he washes in between. He hates the shower and his eczema has improved no end with less baths.

I was wondering when I read some of the replies if this would be the case. I know kids don’t really smell but they all have their own unique odour, I can’t smell my son’s but I can smell others. My son sweats, especially when he’s running around, I don’t think he’s unusual for that. I know people here roll your eyes when you say you go nose blind,
but I really think people do. It’s like when you’re at school and you find a jumper and you knew who it belonged to after you smelled it
Edit- should clarify I can’t smell my son but I’m sure has he his own smell too, I’m just I’m noseblind to it!

They are children, not dogs.

MrsSunshine2b · 05/11/2024 17:22

Whenever she's dirty really. If she's got muddy or done "make-up" she has a bath, even if she had one the day before. If not, she could go a few days. I don't really keep a record.

And did they coat themselves in thick layers of moisturiser/ cocoa butter multiple times a day?

FloatyBoaty · 05/11/2024 17:28

Depends on the week. Anything from 2-3 times a week in winter if no sports (plus shower before and after swimming), to every day in summer. Have an 8 year old.

Didimum · 05/11/2024 17:31

1-2 times a week and a wash when dirty. Two 6yr olds.

This is it… it’s not like I sat next to them and think wow you smell, but by the end of the week some definitely have a smell about them.
Not surprising when lots of Primary aged kids rush going to the toilet so forget to wipe, don’t fully wipe, don’t wash hands,
They also have no problems sitting on the floor, rolling around, picking up anything that looks interesting.
I have 3 children- we bath or shower every night, even if it’s hop in and quick wash

I have noticed among my friends that English people (mothers) wash the kids every night.
Irish mothers don't.

I don't know why this is. I presume cost of electric/water would have been the same growing up so it's not a financial thing, but a cultural one

That's interesting and i suspect its true. I'm Irish and after being a bit freaked out from a thread here I asked around as mine were only washing twice a week. I found most people said two or three times a week, some said once. I've never met someone who makes little kids shower every day.

MustBeThursday · 05/11/2024 18:00

Shower with hair wash once a week and a non hair wash shower every other day or so. DD1's skin gets too dry with daily full showers. As does mine. We used to do hair wash with every shower until the hairdresser told me off because it was drying out their hair really badly. DD1 will probably need to start washing her hair more soon as it starts to get greasy.

Saschka · 05/11/2024 18:00

My 8 year old does, but he loves his baths. Sometimes shower if we are short on time.

He also does a lot of sports, and honestly in summer he gets pretty grubby at school. We shower daily as adults, so it’s good to get him into the habit.

They recognise jumpers by washing powder smell and however their house smells. Danny's sweat does not smell like Persil and cigarette smoke, but his jumper does. Maddie's sweat does not smell like Bold 2-in-1 and fried onions, but her jumper does.

BadPeopleFan · 05/11/2024 18:08

Mine are teenagers now but they were bathed once a day from being babies and put into clean pjs.
I hated the thought of putting them to bed covered in the days grime, especially when small and bum wiping etc was less than reliable.
As teenagers they both now happily shower daily with no drama as they are used to it and they didn't suddenly have to start washing more once they hit puberty.
They also had a full set of clean uniform daily inc jumpers. I won't wear anything twice before washing so I wouldn't expect them to do so.

Mine really enjoy a shower so it isn't really a big deal. Takes 5-10 mins a day.

If they really hated it, I would reconsider

I disagree 🤷‍♀️ to me it doesn’t smell like house smell and washing powder, otherwise you’d expect siblings to smell the same/similar.

StressedQueen · 05/11/2024 18:30

We don't do baths often but my 9 and 6 year old daughters shower every day or sometimes every other day if they haven't been doing a lot or just can't be bothered. Not more than that because they don't look very fresh to me otherwise! I don't think it's bad for their skin at all and if they aren't washing their hair, it's just a quick one. They wash their hair about twice a week - Wednesdays and Sundays, unless there's an event on Saturday or something.

My 3 older kids were the same too. My 15 year old daughters and 12 year old son still shower every day as they'd be very smelly if they didn't in Summer especially. Sometimes one of my girls doesn't have to one day if she hasn't been doing much but the other 2 never miss out because they do a lot of sport and get hot quite easily.

Ambienteamber · 05/11/2024 18:32

Once a week unless needed more. I would obviously give a bath if they had an accident or got covered in mud or had been swimming etc. So often more than once a week coz those things happen alot!
When they hit puberty I'd be encouraging them to shower every day.
I do not think it's necessary to bathe younger kids every single day. Especially babies. I think it harms the skin.
I've got 3 and if I bathed all of them every day I'd have no time to do anything else!!

Old wives’ tale. I’ve had a bath/shower every day for over 70 years. My skin’s fine.
