How often do your children have a bath -
aged 7 and 9.

Surely it cannot be everyday?? Or am I being thick.

Daily per advice from my child's dermatologist (consultant dermatologist at Great Ormond St Hospital). Water warm, not hot and has an emollient in it.

SwingTheMonkey · 05/11/2024 13:35

Morning shower for everyone in the house. No skin issues resulting.

OchAyeTheN00 · 05/11/2024 13:35

Every day. However one of my girls is lazy when she pees and gets sore because she doesn’t dry herself properly, so she needs to be washed regularly (daily) or she gets vulvovaginitis.

that said we all shower daily so I just expect the same of them now too.

EveryDayisFriday · 05/11/2024 13:40

Never bathed them everyday. Every other day when they were in nappies, then every 2-3 days. Now they are teens they shower every other day due to greasy hair. Never sme
I shower daily after the gym and wash my hair every 3 days.

KlongDuplo · 05/11/2024 13:42

Smallies, twice a week. Three times in summer when they were sweatier/grubbier.
Tweens (9/10 onwards) shower every second day and then every day when BO hits.

The sporty teenage boy would happily have 3 showers a day if we let him.

Edenmum2 · 05/11/2024 13:43

I aim for every other day but it depends on what we've been up to

BarbaraHoward · 05/11/2024 13:46

These posts get very heated. Grin

If you look it up, the official recommendations basically just say to do whatever works for you and your kids. There's no right or wrong assuming you're not aggravating any skin conditions or leaving them so long they're not clean.

Mine are 6 and 4 and typically get a bath or shower twice a week. Maybe a bit more in summer. Eldest hated the bath as a baby so we bathed her as little as possible and far away from bedtime, so a nightly bath has never been part of our routine. Others find it settles their children and so daily baths have been their routine from day one and they can't imagine doing otherwise.

Whatever works.

It cannot be good for anyone's skin to be showering every single day surely?

Not if you're using stripping highly scented stuff and burning hot water

A mild wash with not too hot water is fine or a shower oil or emollient if you have dry skin

Ablondiebutagoody · 05/11/2024 13:47

Shower every night. It's no big deal, he does it himself. I definitely think that your 9 year old should. Mine started to get smelly around that age.

Kellythekidd · 05/11/2024 13:48

Irish mother here bath every night for all 3

growing up there were six of us kids and again bathed every night all my nieces and nephews the same

LurkingFromTheShadows · 05/11/2024 13:48

Every other day, unless they've decided to spread ketchup in their hair or dive head first into a pile of mud. Boys are 4 and nearly 2.

Rewis · 05/11/2024 13:50

In MN adults shower twice a day and kids once a day.

I think we see the same dermatologist!

Skybluepinky · 05/11/2024 13:51

Every day, if yr child sits next to a child with AS and they say they smell it’ll b with them the rest of their school life. Also clean clothes everyday.

And towels must be boil washed at least twice after every use.

May well do, but it's pretty standard advice these days (we were told the same by the GP years ago).

crostini · 05/11/2024 13:54

Mine are younger and maybe only have a bath 1-2 a week 😂. I wash their faces before bed though.
I think before puberty it's fine, kids don't naturally stink, but maybe soon it will be good to get them into the routine as it's a good habit for when they're older?

MrsForgetalot · 05/11/2024 13:55

I went with the less is more advice from dermatologists and showering is such a drama now with my autistic teen that I wish I had just made it a daily ritual. It’s very hard to enforce every other day when the number of days in the week is odd, or every Tuesday/ Thursday/Sunday when there’s a difference of two days and three days.

Every time is a battle.

GG1986 · 05/11/2024 14:01

Long baths twice a week, they are under 8. More often if sweaty, dirty, covered in suncream etc.

EasternEcho · 05/11/2024 14:02

7 year old. Summer - shower at least once every day (usually twice, morning and night). Colder months - shower and wash hair every other day. More if required depending on day's activities. Wash face every day. Bath once a week.

mammaCh · 05/11/2024 14:04

Every day as a baby, I thought that's what should be done. Doctor told me to stop and do it 2-3 times a week, even for older kids. The difference in their skin was really remarkable.

InTheRainOnATrain · 05/11/2024 14:06

Unless you’re dealing with skin conditions that advise otherwise then I think a daily shower is a good habit to get into. The 9YO probably isn’t far off really needing it and you know won’t have a fight on your hands if it’s something they’ve always done. And at those ages it’s not exactly any effort for you as they can sort themselves out.

holju · 05/11/2024 14:08

A bath 3 times a week for 7 year old, plus a shower after swimming lesson. Hair washed twice a week.

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 05/11/2024 14:09

Sunday is bath day for our two unless they have got very dirty out on a walk or something. Once they are teenagers will be every other day.

ilovedogsme · 05/11/2024 14:09

2-3 times a week, until they are teenagers and then you have to drag them in at least once a week until they turn about 15 and then they have either a 2 hour bath every night or a 45 minute shower every morning 😂
