Poppy on kids sports kits

HelenHen · 05/11/2024 11:35

This seems to be a big thing now, but seems very unfair.

How can a kid choose to not wear a poppy if its being handed out by their coach before a game?

Not everybody chooses to wear a poppy, for whatever reason... many people do and that's totally ok... but it seems harder and harder for kids to make the choice.

I wasn't aware everyone in a sports team had to have the same moral and political views. Do you really think people should have to miss out on playing sports due to their personal beliefs?

That's up to the individual.
If your team is involved in something you don't agree with you have a choice. Opt in and be part of the team or opt out.

Thankfully the FA and the Royal British Legion disagree with you... so it doesn't matter how 'mortified' (drama much? 😂 ) you are. Wearing a poppy is not a condition for being part of a sports team. Do you honestly think it is? I'm actually mortified for YOU 😳

Do you know where Derry is? Hint: it’s in the UK 🙄

Well Remembrance Day is still a thing in NI. The first minister is planning on attending this year.

“So when I got this invitation to attend remembrance events this weekend, I thought it was important to take that invitation up because that for me is the fulfilment of my commitment to those people out there from a British and unionist identity who hold this important Remembrance Day very carefully to their own heart.
“So, for me, this is about acknowledgement of loss, but it’s also about being respectful to all those people out there and fulfilling my commitment to be First Minister for all.”

Why is it OK to force people to wear the poppy but not OK when it's a swastika or a yellow star?

It’s not ok. But at least respect the legacy. The hostility against the symbol of the Flanders poppy (which was a fight against nazi tyranny) is actually quite sickening.

No army will be whiter than white, but I am glad the British army exists and their professionalism and training is among the best in the world. I just wonder what all these whingers would do if an invading army kicked down their door tonight? Who would they rely on for help? How high would their ideals be then?

Hey, if you want to wear a swastika go for it! You’ll probably have a lot of support unfortunately.

Hopefully most people can see how awful this comment and comparison is.

Hayley1256 · 05/11/2024 18:41

I'd be intrigued to hear what you have told your daughter for her to not want to wear one or is she just copying you?

KrisAkabusi · 05/11/2024 18:43

The Flanders poppy is from WW1, years before Nazis existed.

I just wonder what all these whingers would do if an invading army kicked down their door tonight?

You're ignoring those of us for whom the British army is/was the invading army, and those of us whose doors actually were kicked down by them.

Marblesbackagain · 05/11/2024 18:44

And? It's hardly shocking the elected minister representing everyone didn't state her well known actual opinion?

Point out the some of the hostility towards it?

Choosing to not wear it, not supporting the British army or British legion isn’t hostility.

The sheer ignorance.
As someone who grew up with pairs of the British army marching up and down her street with rifles while we played with a ball I will choose to not wear a poppy. Supporting the British army is of no interest to me.

The sheer audacity to call someone not wearing a poppy disrespectful and then call people who don’t agree with you whingers.

Frankly fanatics like you are what put many people off. Your posts are incredibly distasteful.

The poppy has become a cult.

Really? Shall I list the names of those whose innocent blood was spilt by those in the uniform that inflicted fear in generations of my ancestors and relative's?

Newsflash it was those soldiers kicking in our doors! Get informed your ignorance is amazing.

I told her that if it were to commemorate those who died in the WW's only, that would be fine. However the "Poppies are worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community" (direct quote from RBL website). I can not and will not donate to that cause. Sorry I can't satisfy your intrigue, but these are highly personal stories to me, not to be disected for your amusement.

I wear white and purple poppies.

RobertaFirmino · 05/11/2024 18:55

I won't wear one. Means nothing to me. I'd rather we dispensed with it altogether and vowed to stand up to fascism every time we encountered it instead.

Brananan · 05/11/2024 18:55

I wonder how many of the pro poppy brigade would encourage their dcs to join the army?

God I had no idea the Nazis fought in WW1. Which side were they on then? Because the Germans were led by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The ignorance in this post...

You don't even know what the poppy represents, and don't seem to know that for many the world over (including some in the UK, likely in your own lifetime) the British army was the terrifying occupying force kicking down the door.

Literally no one is saying you shouldn't wear a poppy, just that there's loads of valid reasons others may choose not to. Which includes, btw, "I don't want to".

SoporificLettuce · 05/11/2024 19:01

@Screamingabdabz writes

I despair at such a comment on a thread where Irish people have already stated that their family members were murdered by the British Army.

Don’t you realise that to many on this island that we Irish call home the invading army kicking down doors were the very same people you seek to venerate?

CurlewKate · 05/11/2024 19:01

Important to remember that there are parts of Great Britain that are not on the mainland.

If you are going to make histrionic statements like this, at least read up on your history. The Flanders poppy was WW1.

Fairyliz · 05/11/2024 19:02

It’s part of the kit, tell your kids they can leave the club if they don’t like it.
I assume that will make them change their mind especially if all of their friends attend.

Great Britain is the ‘mainland’.

The United Kingdom is Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) plus Northern Ireland.

peonym · 05/11/2024 19:06

@JaneDoeHere you aren't from NI I guess? Because this is ignorant in the extreme. Of course the first minister is going to say this as well she should, both first and deputy minister should be participating in events across the community to try to unite. It absolutely does not mean that the nationalist community or indeed most people on the island of Ireland would wear a poppy. We just aren't dickheads who judge others for doing so.

It's not part of the kit.

And obviously I won't tell my kids that, because it's not based on any actual reality 😂

What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you seriously think this is a reasonable thing to suggest?

We don't even do that to professional footballers (and we damn well shouldn't) but yes let's tell kids they have to wear a political symbol they don't agree with to be allowed to play with their friends. That sounds reasonable. Fucking hell.

Literally no one is saying that remembrance shouldn't be a thing or that it isn't a thing in NI. We're saying it shouldn't be compulsory and individual preferences should be respected.
