Extendable dog leads - please please please stop using them

I am the owner of a large senior dog. He is always on lead, and wears a harness. He is not an XL bully before anyone asks, and I am always in control of him. He used to love saying hello to other dogs on our walks, and now he's an anxious mess because people can't be bothered to train their dogs due to them being small. There is an assortment of small shouty dogs in my area, chihuahuas, jack russells, pugs, daschunds, bichon style dogs, miniature schnauzers, westies, cross breeds of them all. Most of them are walked on those bloody extendable leads. These small horrors will yell at us from across the road when we are minding our own business. Then they try to come over the road and the owner inevitably has to yank them back because the lead doesn't retract properly, and in the event that we can't avoid walking on the same side of the road, my poor dog gets a faceful of angry ranty little shit because their owners think an extendable lead means they don't need to teach a dog recall, heel, and other calming techniques. I'm tired of telling people to control their dogs.

Do they have to attack a child before you'll give a shit, honestly? Or maybe your dog has to run out into the middle of the road and get hit by a car first? If any of this doesn't apply to you and your small dog, please scroll on and thank you for being a responsible dog owner.

I've lost all patience. truly. There is a house at the bottom of my road with three small dogs, one of which is a really nasty little shit. When they are walked, it's always out in front of everyone else yelling at anything that goes by. There's another family across the road with a chihuahua, and they all yell at each other from across the road, it's so noisy and initially I thought someone was hurting one of them. When I went to go and check things out, they were honestly just screaming at one another. Nobody ever does anything, you just have to listen to it until they run out of steam.

You have ZERO control over a dog on an extendable lead. ZERO. Train your fucking dogs. It might be your little bundle of joy, but you're failing them hard when you don't train them.

I'd like to see a ban on extendable leads, but I realise it probably won't happen. AIBU for wanting a ban on them? You can buy long leads to give dogs some room to run about in large spaces while they burn off some energy, but you still have more control over those because YOU control how far a dog goes on it.

I have changed the times I walk my dog to avoid times when there are more people around. I take him to different areas etc, but this nonsense still drives me up the wall. AIBU? Sorry for all the swearing, I'm just so frustrated. We went out at 6am this morning and it was so lovely and quiet. I don't expect quiet perfection, just people controlling their dogs. Thank you for reading my wordy rant.

The leads are fine, it's the owners.

MargotwithaT · 04/11/2024 09:38

Mixed views on this. I have nearly run over a very small dog on an extendable lead held by a toddler in a pram. Also nearly been tripped up coming out of a shop by an extendable lead being used on the pavement.
However I use an extendable lead in an enclosed space with my rescue who I want to give some freedom too but can’t trust to let her off. No amount of training could mitigate against her bolting when she hears a loud bang.
I have two rescues and they are brilliant but the amount of hostility I get from other dog owners who see small, fluffy dogs and assume I am not an experienced dog owner is off the scale. They soon get put back in their boxes.

Packetofcrispsplease · 04/11/2024 09:38

I have a small terrier ,about 10 kilos and I hate extendable leads !
My dog is a re home and was reactive when we got him ( he came from a household that had 2 larger dogs + one of the dogs stole his food )
I walk him on a fixed lead that has a small part that absorbs any tugging , and a harness for his comfort .
plus I’ve done a lot of work with him using training treats and getting him to sit / stay .
Walking in an arc rather than a straight line towards dogs I think he might react to helps too .
He is absolutely fine with so many other dogs now .
Someone local has a large strong dog that has the appearance of a large bull breed and he’s absolutely not bothered with this dog at all .
It’s so calm and unbothered .
local chihuahuas go nuts at my dog from inside their house but are fine when out

amoreoamicizia · 04/11/2024 09:38

No, the leads are not fine. They are mobile trip wires.

Absolutely 👏👏👏👏👏

Isobel201 · 04/11/2024 09:39

The leads are fine, its the idiots who can't use them properly. We've used one with ours for years and had no issues.

Grammarnut · 04/11/2024 09:40

Entirely agree with you. Extendable leads ought not to be used on the street. And they do prevent control. I saw a woman's dog nearly run over a few weeks ago, on an extendable lead. She was absorbed in her phone, her dog saw mine on the other side of the road (I had crossed over to avoid her dog, my dog was on a standard lead and I use two hands for it, one securing the loop, the other holding the lead so it lies across my body and my dog walks at my left foot) and ran into the road right in front of a car. Driver (and I) totally shocked as he did an emergency stop. She didn't even say sorry.
There is a place for extendable leads. A large park that is unknown to you, for example, but the owner should still be able to recall the dog and also be prepared to grab the lead with both hands as a means of control.

There is no replacement for training the dog, however.

amoreoamicizia · 04/11/2024 09:41

When people are saying it's not the leads, it's the owners, you do realise that that's the point, don't you? People cannot use them properly so they should be banned.

SometimesCalmPerson · 04/11/2024 09:42

Extendable leads have a useful place, and they’re not responsible for al the small yappy dogs you have to put up with.

Dogs still need to experience some freedom while they are learning recall, or if they are struggling with it. Even with training, some dogs never get to the point it can be relied upon 100% but they still need to be allowed to sniff around more than they can on a short lead that you’d use to walk down a street. Owners are in control of dogs on extending leads, but sometimes owners are dickheads.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 04/11/2024 09:42

Or maybe your dog has to run out into the middle of the road and get hit by a car first?

This is my biggest objection to these types of leads. In the middle of a field is one thing, but on the pavement they are a liability. They are also a massive trip hazard when people allow the dog too much rope and they run around other people and get between their legs.

Getonwitit · 04/11/2024 09:42

An elderly relative is in hospital with a broken pelvis and wrist, he was cycling along the road when out of a side road ran a dog on an extendable lead, it's fucking idiot of an owner was too busy scrolling on her phone instead of controlling her mutt. My uncle didn't have time to react and ended up in a heap, thankfully members of the public stopped to help and keep the silly cow there until the police arrived. Her dog died on the road because of her and my poor uncle will never be the same again because of her.

Demonhunter · 04/11/2024 09:43

I find the bigger dogs seem to be the gentler ones. I have a really docile Jack Russell, she's very old and has sight issues and she hates little dogs coming to her, they make her really nervous, but her tail wags away when a gentle giant (to her) comes over to say hello.

I do think it's not the lead that's the issue but the fact that so many people just let their dogs approach without the humans having a brief check to whether it's OK. Luckily where we walk, the vast majority do check, especially when they see how old she is, but I've never let her approach others without having a chat and if we're a place I can let her off lead, she's back on it as soon as I see another dog. I think because some people are so used to having outgoing, friendly dogs, they forget not all are the same, and that dogs have individual personalities just like us.

When people are saying it's not the leads, it's the owners, you do realise that that's the point, don't you? People cannot use them properly so they should be banned.

But people on here that use them do use them properly.
There are lots of things that people do not use properly, yet we don't call for bans otherwise we would have nothing left!

Ebabllisstggoffor · 04/11/2024 09:44

I really don’t like them. A dog should be either walking nicely next to you, or off the lead if their recall is 100%.

I recently witnessed a woman get felled by an extending lead. It was her own dog that suddenly wrapped the lead around her. She fell flat on her face. Unfortunately she had a takeaway coffee in her hand and a baby strapped to her front. The coffee went all over the baby. It all happened so quickly, luckily all was ok but it could have been much worse.

TheHouseOfMouse · 04/11/2024 09:45

SadSadGirl · 04/11/2024 08:30

I wish they'd just ban dogs completely. We shouldn't be breeding them. 😞

Yeah… OK…🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

ToriMJ · 04/11/2024 09:45

Errr, no.
What you mean is "please be responsible when walking your dog".
We use an extensible lead but very carefully. He's never on too long a line near others/near danger/etc. but we do find it a useful tool as his recall is still unreliable at times.

needsomewarmsunshine · 04/11/2024 09:45

I like dogs, but there are too many dogs on the Isle of Wight and even more useless owners who haven't trained them properly.

bridgetreilly · 04/11/2024 09:46

The problem is the owners who don’t care and can’t be bothered, not the leads.

oakleaffy · 04/11/2024 09:46

@violentovulation Completely agree with you.
I have a well mannered 10.5 kilo dog, extremely quiet, but so many ill mannered dogs and their cretinous owners use these wretched spooling leads where the Poodle cross can bolt out into traffic to aggress at my quiet young dog.

Another bugbear are those long trailing leads that the owners allow their untrained mutt to trail around behind it, with a hand loop in that other dogs can step into.

Good idea to carry a small sharp safety cutter {Like a hay bale cutter} to slice any lead like this as the thin nylon can wrap itself around other people and dogs - The nylon won't snap, so needs a blade to slice it.

Extendable dog leads - please please please stop using them
Outandinbout · 04/11/2024 09:48

Really tired of untrained dogs. Even otherwise nice, middle class people I know just don't seem to think they should train their dogs. I don't get how this is an area they think it is ok to be anti-social to other people over. I have seen dog owners openly laughing with other dog owners over how their dogs chase and frighten small children. Fucking awful behaviour.

Those extended leads are a real trip hazard. I don't agree with them either. Your dog should be well trained with good recall or be on a lead.

Jellycatspyjamas · 04/11/2024 09:48

The common denominator in most of these tales is actually the owner being on the phone and not being alert to what’s gap with their dog and the wider environment. If folk got off their phones when out with their dog it wouldn’t matter what lead they used, they’d be alert and able to react.

Wexone · 04/11/2024 09:49

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/11/2024 08:23

The leads aren't the problem, nor are the dogs, it's the useless owners who cba training the dogs. I've had many dogs over the years, use extending leads a lot of the time and haven't had any issues

Same here - do not see the issue
Only issue i have is yappy dogs off leads running to my dogs and their owners saying oh they are friendly
As per usual its not the dog or the equipment - but the owners

FragileWookiee · 04/11/2024 09:49

I hate flexi leads aswell OP. My staffy is kept on a short lead on the pavement. A while ago, he had two border terriers running and barking at him from the opposite side of the street, who were both on flexi leads. They could of been hit by a car, the owner didn't care, I dont think she realised straight away they were in the road, no apology either. Pavement walking it really needs to be short leads for safety

I have a longer length lead (not a flexi) for when we are out in the woods/fields because his recall isn't 100% but it gives him a little more freedom. But I'm aware of who is around us and he goes back onto his short lead when walking past others.

Oh 100 percent - bloody hate it when i see people walking their dog and on the phone - i cant do it at all, cant keep an eye on the dog of on the phone

Agree about nasty, untrained little dogs. There’s a chihuahua x near us which chases and tries to bite if you walk past its garden. If a German shepherd behaved like that the owners would be in serious trouble but because it’s a tiny little thing they get away with it.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that the GS could kill you and the tiny yapping little thing couldn’t?
