No gift card

Yes, I know I'm being unreasonable for not checking and posting when it is technically not an aibu but I'm just in a flap and hope someone can help!

I bought a gift card for someone from a highstreet retailer a couple of weeks ago. Or I thought I did. I was give a little sparkly card envelope, a transaction receipt and a little balance receipt. I put the transaction receipt into my purse and left the shop with the card envelope reading the balance receipt that said that had to go to the recipient of the gift card. Didn't realise register at that point that there was no gift card, I just sort of assumed that maybe they'd done away with them as plastic waste and just needed to scan the paper gift receipt. But it's now my friends birthday and I've written the card and was just checking all was in order and realised that there is no card. And the gift receipt says that if card is lost they can't reimburse. I've messed up by not realising the lady in the shop didn't give me the card haven't I? Is there any way the receipt will be sufficient to give my friend or should I just stick cash in their birthday card? The shop is closed today otherwise I would have gone in to ask there. I'll be so upset if I'm out of pocket for being an idiot.

I'd give the cash because if it's a gift but your friend has the hassle of trying to sort the issue out in the shop it kind of takes away from it being a gift.

I agree to give your friend cash and then go back to the shop tomorrow and see if you can resolve it.

Mistakes happen, don't beat yourself up.

Yeah, I'll give cash. I'm so cross with myself for not noticing properly and going back to question the lady at the till

Thank you for your responses

What kind of shop is it? Do you think the assistant deliberately kept the card ?

Secradonugh · 03/11/2024 12:50

They can check on the till to see what gift card was loaded. If it wasn't loaded then the cashier screwed up, if it was loaded, then ask for a replacement card. Most gift cards are administrated by one of 2 companies, and the card doesn't actually have money on it, it just links back to an account.
